I hope they finally figured out how to do flight mechanics correctly because they suck in previous iterations.
My understand is that while there will be helos, there will not be fixed wing aircraft. Fine by me.

the ach list makes me happy.  some good stuff to do in there, oh yeah.

after seeing it though, i wonder,
Spoiler for Hiden:
did they add in a massive chunk of collectible crap to find?  it looks like there's only the one for hidden packages.

i also like the sound of the evasion method.  a bit like i remember it from mafia.  i do wish you could hide out somewhere within the circle though as there's no reason a cop should know exactly where you are if they lose sight of you.  they should comb through the area you were last seen in though inch by inch, but they shouldn't be able to tell you hid in a dumpster or something.

Darnit...I just wish this game would get here.  I'm obsessing over playing cops and robbers again.  If anyone sees a 'Bean Bandit' on their friends list...it's just me...I finally went and changed my GamerTag.

Ah, thanks for mentioning that Dreamshadow... someone on my list from QT3 changed theirs and it took me a while to figure out who/how the hell this person got on my friends list.

OXM UK has given the game a perfect score (10/10)! The full review has been scanned and is out on the web, but I won't link it here since I don't know the policies regarding that sort of thing. Those with decent Google-fu will find it pretty easily.

My hype meter for this game is now officially off the charts.

They fail to mention anything about the framerate which makes me extremely nervous. Mass Effect was almost enough to convince me to drop out of this console generation entirely, if GTA4 turns out choppy it might be the straw for me...

The review does say there was a small bit of pop-up noticeable, but it sounded like it wasn't anywhere near the issue it was in the rest of the series.  In one of the multiplayer previews they said the framerate was strong except for when they all started firing rockets at the same time.

I'm reading way too much about this game.

All of the Mass Effect reviews (the good ones, anyway) mentioned the shit framerate.  I figure no news is good news on this review, but we won't know till more pop up.

I can live with some pop-up, I am more than willing to trade visual quality if it means a balance between quality and how smooth the game runs. Halo 3 is the perfect example, it isn't the best looking game out there but it runs silky smooth under most conditions. I'm not complaining about those moments where half the screen is filled with explosions and there is smoke and debris flying everywhere, in Mass Effect even the cutscenes would chop up sometimes and it drove me nuts.

I missed this on my first read of the IGN GTA Hands on:

Quote
A similar running and beating escapade ended with the cops chasing us down. However, when all looked lost and Niko raised his hands in defeat, we were presented with a unique option in the GTA universe -- for the first time, we could run. Yes, when the cops catch up to you on foot, Niko will initially play along with the arrest but can take off before the cuffs are put on. Not a bad move if you need to catch your breath (Niko gets winded from running) or a car crawls across the screen to provide an easy escape.

no more 'insta busted'!  thumbsup

on slowdowns:

Quote
Playing with eight people, we only had one instance of slowdown. And that was when all of us were firing RPGs into a crowd of cops. At that point, the game just sort of threw up it hands and said, "Come on, seriously?" Except for this brief moment of slowdown, our hours enjoying GTA IV online were without incident. And, more importantly, the controls never suffered. You may notice a slight drop in visual fidelity (or perhaps we're nuts), but GTA IV still looks great in multiplayer. The city is as alive and vibrant as in the single-player campaign -- and it's a lot more hectic. That so much can be happening at once without the game breaking in half is an amazing feat. The fact that it's also incredibly fun is just a bonus.

aintitcool.com now has impressions up. More of the same - i.e. - this will be the best freaking game ever made.

Speaking of which, I may have to break down and pre-order this. I cannot in any way shape or form take the chance that I will not have this in my hands on release day.

That's bizarre. The Amazon.ca does indeed show the regular editions coming on April 22nd, while the Special Editions come out the 29th. Wish it were true, but it's most likely not.

for those of us who get stuck on missions, I have found in GTA games the weapon cheat is a must.  Trying to do mid game missions with a pistol just isnt fun. The weapon cheat allows you the good stuff at all times so you can just have fun.  I couldn't/wouldnt play without it.

People need to read that preview at AICN because it explains how a few things work in MP, specifically the race. If you think it's all about just getting from point A to point B then check this out - in one of the races, someone in last place left their car, hopped in a bus, then blocked a choke point which necessitated a tremendous amount of violence. I'm left to wonder whether anyone actually finished the race. smile

My secret concern is that the day the game arrives some big crisis will occur with an elderly parent, house electrics or plumbing, job, wife, etc and I'll have to man up and take care of it, all the time thinking "Gamestop is only going to hold it for 48 hours!!!"

Petty, yes, but at my age the true pleasures of life occur less and less often.

At least I've addressed the RROD concern by having a backup 360 available.

OK, finally read that.  I think GTA IV will be the second coming-  I've already gone ahead and modified certain pieces of art to prepare for the days after:

GTA IV prepares for release:

GTA IV died for our sins!

GTA IV arrives on release day after foiling the evil EA Empire:

For that comfortable, "I'm all set" feeling. Knowing that I can go out at lunch on release day and have it in my grubby paws without any real effort. Since the noyl store really handy for a lunch time stop is a gamestop and they like to say no to people without pre-orders, I have to play the sheep.

I preordered the collector's from Amazon.  Because preordering where you have to go to a store is for chumps.  I much prefer to have things sent to my office, where the front desk guys will bring it directly to my desk.  I might have to wait an extra day (maybe), but that's okay by me.

yeah, but then it's sitting at your desk, teasing you all day until you get off work.  I'm thinking about taking the day off, going to the midnight release and GTA'ing out for the whole day.
