I too was disappointed in there not being one millisecond of actual gameplay, but hey, anything GoW is good.

Is it a bad sign there's no gameplay to show 9 mos out?  Or are they just keeping their cards close?

No worries.  I don't think we need to doubt the production values.

Not that I would want that for gears of war, but I think it sucks that they ever made another zelda game that wasn't cell shaded.

At least it showed more than the Star Trek movie "teaser".

I'm not sure why but the SP campaign in GoW was boring for me, hopefully they can put together a better story and more interesting characters this time around.

I think the GoW1 story was such a missed opportunity.

On top of the good gameplay, if they had fleshed out Marcus' story just a small bit more it could have made many moments in the game a lot more meaningful.

for example:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Marcus' return to his old home to retrieve the data from his Father's lab.  The same father he had been jailed for trying to rescue.  Now that same man that the Marcus' superiors wouldn't let him rescue ended up having the data that saved everyone, not to mention what other secrets Marcus' father could have divulged were he still alive.  It would have been so much more poignant and ironic had they set this up in some way within the game, and not just as a blurb in the manual.

Yeah, I hope the story is fleshed out a bit more this time.  I thought what was there was effectively executed in a Bruckheimer-summer movie sort of way, but there were lots of gaps where it felt like more stuff should be explained that wasn't.

I agree that it was a pretty uninformative trailer other than a possible release date

I will mostly definitely buy this game unless they do something really jacked up

You now get epic mounts. They look like Sonic the Hedgehog, and you have to wave WiiMotes around to stay balanced while travelling down Wipeout-style tunnels.

don't forget the boss battle where you have to break out the Guitar Hero controller and they force you to use all 5 frets, with some sections of the song requiring all 5 to be hit at the same time.

Unfortunately Resistance II will win game of the year for making the boss battle require that you pull together 3 friends, the rock band controllers and belt out a perfect rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

This is Epic we're talking about people.  Do you really want these guys coming up with a single player story?

Well the first game was written by Eric Nylund (who writes those Halo novels that I think are really overrated but he's still a cut above most videogame writers) and a woman who's name I can't recall but also helped in writing Bioshock.

Although, I recall reading there was some kind of fallout between Nylund and the GoW team and he might have left the project early.

The fallout was likely from Epic cutting out almost every single bit of interesting story and characterization from the game.  That'd piss me off too.

As much as I want this, I don't think I'll be taking this one online for adversarial multiplayer.  I initially liked GoW adversarial multiplayer, but after a while its problems really showed up.  I was especially disappointed at how the basic assault rifle just wasn't that useful and running headlong forward with a shotgun was often a better tactic.

That's kind of what I thought when I read about the supposed break with Nylund. I can't imagine any writer working on a story for a game and then being happy when the final product shows so little of it that it might as well not be there at all.

I too am hoping for an actual storyline this time around. The the first game was fun, but the story was non-existent.

And I agree on the multiplayer. It was cool at first but the more I played the more broken and annoying it seemed. They need to work on weapon balance and control issues in big ways for it to keep my interest this time, especially if it's going to pull me away from Vegas2. Based on my experience with the original R6: Vegas I figure I'll still be playing that when GoW2 comes out.

GOW2 should be a prequel, show Marcus and DOm and the gang fighting in non-bombed out scenarios and end with the arrival of the bad guys.

GOW3 should be what led to Marcus being jailed and the early fight with the bad guys.

GOW4 should be the end of the war and the series.

I'm really hoping for 4 player co-op.  The last game was just screaming for it and if it does, I'll be buying it day 1 and grabbing another year of Live subscription.
