Gay Gamer hacked

Gay Gamer, my second favorite game news site (behind ol' GT), just posted this:

Hello, faithful readers:
As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still intact. At this point we are just waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online.
Hopefully, this will be resolved by the end of this weekend, so please keep checking back. You can't keep a good gay gamer down, so we'll be back before you know it, serving up all the sassy game content you can handle.

That's some horrible stuff. It's amazing to me that somebody would have that much time on their hands, as well as that much ignorant hate, to hack a site like this. It's not really surprising, seeing how prevalent anti-queer sentiment is in this country (and the world).

Yes, according to this "someone began flooding the site's forums and chat room with hate speech, including some death threats, and over-sized images meant to bog down the site".

normally at stuff like this i would say why the hell were they attacking gamers just because they were gay,surely if they like games it shouldnt matter etc,etc

i dont know,perhaps thats offensive....they have say,British only communities,and Canadian or American only,so i guess this is the same

Because other sites, including this one at times, degrade homosexuals by calling things/people "gay" in a negative tone and telling other members to turn in their man-card because they aren't being macho.  Yet lesbianism is strongly encouraged.

Yes, if the associaton / organization that owns the site is regsistered in Canada.

My feelings about this are the same as my feelings about any hacking; WTF somebody did all that work for free!!

how did i know who wrote this before looking to the left?

hackers are like mountain climbers.  "i did it because it's there, and i can prove it."  the one time we were hacked at work, the guy did a simple home page hijack and gave us the answer to how it was done.  stupidly simple hack, and a glaring oversight by the guy who set up the web page/server.  a log file with plain text user/password combined with a static strong password.  took a few hours and cost us in some consultant time, but considering the possibilities of what he could have done, we got off light.

this looks like a crowley drive by attack combined with some simple dos limited to a few ip's.  brute force destruction as opposed to the careful exploit of a site vulnerability.  should be back up soon.  much easier to ID and block IP's than it is to find the hole in your security and fix it.

That's unfortunate. I like the site and actually read it from time to time just because I enjoy their opinions. It's good to hear that everything on the site is intact though and they didn't lose anything.

I just checked it out.  It's a pretty good site but a little "too" gay for me.  I have nothing against it but when I want to read about games I only want to read about games-I don't want the gay/heterosexual slant.

I heard an interview with those guys on Major Nelson's podcast a few weeks ago. I went to the site to check it out and it was too gay for me too.  Peoples' sexual preferences are their own business and I respect that.  Just keep it out of my face.

Seriously.  I don't like to see public displays of affection by heterosexual couples either.  If a straight D-Bag ran a web site with a slogan like "for guys who like women with big cans" I wouldn't want any part of that site either.
