The free version of Gametap launched today.  The free-to-play games include Tomb Raider : Legend, Commandos 3, Jagged Alliance 2 Gold, Disciples 2, Myst Online, Scrapland, and several old arcade games.  The site says that the games will change weekly, so these may only be around for a week.

It seems incredibly bugging atm.
You're moments away from playing <Game Name>.

I get that and the arrow buttons don't work either. Oh well, free is free I suppose.

I tried out Metal Slug and Tomb Raider : Legend.  With Metal Slug (and presumably all the classic arcade games) there is an add banner at the bottom of the screen while you play.  Tomb Raider took most of the day to download, but runs just fine.  You have to watch a 15-second video ad before you start playing, but after that, it plays normally with no ads.

Nice, I didn't hear about this until now. I'll definitely check it out. I had been thinking about doing the pay to play gametap for a while, but this is even better.

I'm still hoping they have the paying customers on seperate servers so the freeloaders don't hog all the bandwidth.  If not I'll probably be cancelling my subscription in the coming weeks.

I'm pre-paid through October, but +1 to the sentiment.  I'm gonna be miffed if games suddenly take 10X as long to download.

I didn't notice any major downloading slowdown (paid version) but I would imagine with yesterdays launch there were a lot of people trying it out all at once. The only thing driving traffic spikes going forward will be quality of the free game selections each Thursday.

Somethings screwy. It says Qix is free to play but when I try to play it it says I have to upgrade to the gold package to play Qix.

There are some inconsistencies between the list on their website and the free games available in the player.  It lists Qix and Disciples Gold on the website, but the actual free games are Super Qix and Disciples II : Rise of The Elves Gold.  However, they did extend the first batch of free games until June 13, whereas they were supposed to expire on June 5.

It was ok.  Not great, but not absolutely horrible either.

Certainly didn't live up to the high standards of the American McGee brand, however.  Ha!  I made a funny!

I've gotta say, I just used the Gametap free service to download TR: Legends and damn I'm really impressed with it!
It did take about 20 hours to download but it is after all 4.7 GB's.
I love the look and feel of the service's gui; more functional and better looking than any of the console dashboards I've used. And I really like that it will run in a perfect widescreen resolution and aspect on my HDTV.

I have a question; if you upgrade to the full product, are there limits to the number of games or total GB's you can download per month?

Nein.  Nyet.  At least, there doesn't seem to be.  I've downloaded 15gb or more in the last two weeks.
