2012 is here.  Only finished 8 games, and 2 of those lasted less than 3 hours.  Doubt this year will be any better.

FINISHED IN 2013[/u]
-  Bioshock Infinite - A- (April 8 ).  Great atmosphere and a crazy but compelling story made up for a rather 'meh' shooter.
-  Tomb Raider - A+ (April 28).  If you would have told me a couple weeks ago that Tomb Raider would be my frontrunner for GOTY over Bioshock Infinite, I'd have said you were nuts.  However, this was absolutely a brilliant game from start to finish.  Tense, exciting, beautiful, thrilling, emotional..everything I could have asked for.  And this is coming from someone who has never liked a Tomb Raider game before and isn't really a big fan of the action genre.   In fact, I'd go so far as to put Tomb Raider in my top 5 for this entire console generation...it's that damn good.

I had a few minor gripes (the neverending waves of enemies towards the end got to be a bit much, I think they could have done more with the ending), but overall this game knocked my gorram socks off.  A+, two thumbs up, 99/100, GOTY, etc, etc.

Currently Playing
-  Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (iOS)
-  Etrian Odyssey IV (3DS)

Played and Gave Up On
-  Tera (PC) - A very fun combat system, but got really grindy towards the mid-levels.  Never could get a handle on the crafting system either.  32 hours.
-  Witcher 2 (360) - I tried...this one's just not for me.  A decent map or quest tracking systems would have been a lifesaver, but it was an exercise in frustration without one.  Story didn't grab me much either.  8 hours.
-  Asura's Wrath (PS3) - A unique game, but where games like Bayonetta and El Shaddai were brilliant in their weirdness, AW was just...boring.  Got about halfway through before losing interest.  3 hours.
-  The Secret World (PC) - An interesting approach to MMO's, but the lack of levels ended up leading to a lot of frustration.  I always felt underleveled and annoyed because nothing was ever explained well in-game.  Plus, the setting (zombies...ugh) didn't interest me at all.  24 hours.
-  Persona 4 Golden (Vita) - I found P4 to be remarkably dull.  It felt like a carbon copy of P3, which I was 'meh' on to begin with.  4 hours.
-  Gravity Rush (Vita) - Interesting concept, but got kinda boring pretty quickly. 2 hours
-  Mass Effect 3 (PS3) - Not interesting enough to play through again, methinks. 10 hours
-  Anno 2070 (PC)
-  Settlers 7 (PC)
-  Skyrim (PC) - Funner with mods, but still gets kinda dull.  30 hours.
-  Fire Emblem (3DS) - Don't know why I keep trying these...they never click.  4 hours
-  Demon's Souls (PS3) - Died 3 times just trying to get through the tutorial.  Definitely not a game for me.  1.5 hours.

Marking my territory here.  now I'll need to force myself to go back and (ac)count for all the games I played last year.

First finished:

Sniper Elite V2 on hardest difficulty.  overall, not to bad a game, although the wack-a-mole aspect to finding out enemy sniper positions and getting your sights dialed in started to wear on me towards the end.  I basically ran and gunned the last few missions once I knew the enemy layout.  I turned off the gore cam too.

Dead Pixels.  got this in a bundle somewhere I think.  kind of like what you would have played back in the nes days had Nintendo been more open to gore and violence.  basic rpg stuff plus lots of mindless killing.

Aliens Colonial Marines - despite how poorly this was received, I enjoyed it.  I can really only say it's worth picking up if you like the franchise and go in with a healthy amount of lowered expectations.  it's not going to win any awards and even manages to tarnish the work it's based on, which should relegate it to the bin of "better to have not released" ala DNF (coincidence that two of Gearbox's efforts be tied in this way), but despite all that, it does manage to evoke the same sense of the movie enough to warrant a look if you are a fan.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - I disregarded this originally as it felt like it was going to far into the fantastic fake technology aspect, but picked it up during a sale.  I wish I had grabbed this earlier.  it's a solid shooter throughout and the fancy cloaking tech and other futuristic gadgets change the game from the original but don't over shadow the core gameplay.  also, the gunsmith component should become the de-facto method for gun customization from now on.  I never once felt limited by a weapon's default build like you do in every other shooter with CoD-like upgrades.

Tomb Raider - best game I have finished so far this year (March) and one of the best I have played.  Highly recommended to any action fan, whether the original games, UC, Batman or AC.  solid game throughout.

Dishonored - Best version of Thief we'll get until Thief 4 comes out (hopefully).  eventually tired of the slow methodical approach and slaughtered a few end levels worth of bad guys as the end-game started to drag for me.

Bioshock Infinite - Good FPS, great story, beautiful world in both look and design.  It trims down from BS1/2's complexity;  it's arguable whether that's a good or bad thing.  Avoid the spoiler videos at all costs if you want the full ride.

Walking Dead - Best adventure game I've played.  Characters that you come to love, fight for, mourn for and are willing to die for.  one of the bleakest games ever made, yet ends in a way that no hollywood ending could hope to match.  highly recommended

Finished:

Hotline Miami (PC Jan 3) - fun game, great soundtrack, lots of deaths (mostly mine)
BF3 campaign (PC Jan 18) - some ok firefights, played on hard and autosaves sucked
Spec Ops The Line (PC Feb 3) - meh, ok if you get it cheap
Hitman Absolution (PC May) - really good, but I've decided I'm not so much into sneaking games anymore. I snuck around till I got noticed and then played FPS Shooter

In Progress
Walking Dead PS3/ipad
Anno 2070 PC

Played and put aside

My meager accomplishments for 2012...only completed four games, which is by far my least in years. I think there were really two causes for the 'decline'...spending the first half of the year playing nothing but Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim (164 hours!), and having a few distractions in my personal life. I'm hoping to get back into the groove for 2013 though icon_cool

Finished 19 games last year, which is (once again) less than the year before. Last year's post is here.

I'm sticking the Vita and PSP categories together since I'll be playing all my PSP games on the Vita anyway.

Games Finished in 2013

PC
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Borderlands
  • Doom 3 BFG Edition - Actually the second time I complete this game. It has aged very gracefully.
  • Doom 1 - The original 3 episodes on Ultra Violence. Thy Flesh Consumed doesn't really count. Tongue
  • Scribblenauts Unlimited

PS3

    Vita / PSP

      3DS
      • Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Jan. 5 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution [360]
Excellent... got a bit formulaic midway through, but a good modern take on the original.

April 29 - Bioshock Infinite [PC]

Deadlight      - Had to watch some youtube videos to complete.  Started off great then just puttered out.
Dishonored    -  Really enjoyed the game and now need to play again with combat as my focus, hopefully a totally new game.
Far Cry 3       - Not sure why I finish games as most endings......    The game itself was a blast.
Dead Island  -  Got to Chapter 3 a long time ago and decided that I wanted to finish, once again, endings.....
Hitman Absolution -  Really enjoyed this one and will probably play again on a higher difficulty.
Limbo          - Never knew how close I was to finishing back when it was released.  Finally finished today.  Cool game.

Kotor 2 with tsl 1.8 mod. Great game!
Kings Bounty Warriors of the North.
System Shock 2-only took me 14 yrs to finish! I got stuck back in 1999. Thank you GOG
Kingdoms of Amalur. Solid game. Sad what happened to Big Huge Games.
Deus Ex Human revolution. Great game. Liked it so much I thought it was a little short. Didn't think the boss battles were quite as horrible as many others, but the second one was quite a pain. Doing the DLC now.
Finished the DLC Missing link. Surprised there was no more extra content for Deus EX HR.
