2012 is here.  Only finished 8 games, and 2 of those lasted less than 3 hours.  Doubt this year will be any better.

FINISHED IN 2013[/u]
-  Bioshock Infinite (PS3) - A- (April 8 ).  Great atmosphere and a crazy but compelling story made up for a rather 'meh' shooter.  Around 8 hours
-  Tomb Raider (PS3) - A+ (April 28).  If you would have told me a couple weeks ago that Tomb Raider would be my frontrunner for GOTY over Bioshock Infinite, I'd have said you were nuts.  However, this was absolutely a brilliant game from start to finish.  Tense, exciting, beautiful, thrilling, emotional..everything I could have asked for.  And this is coming from someone who has never liked a Tomb Raider game before and isn't really a big fan of the action genre.   In fact, I'd go so far as to put Tomb Raider in my top 5 for this entire console's that damn good.  About 8 hours
-  Neverwinter (PC) - B (May 31).  I consider any MMO in which I reach the level cap "beaten", so I'll add this one to the list.  A by-the-numbers MMO, but still kept me interested enough to get through it all.  Will be interesting to come back in a few months and see what people have done with the Foundry.  56 hours.
-  Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (iOS) - B+ (July 10).  Not sure you can ever actually "beat" this game, but I finished all three of the quests and beat every song on the hardest difficulty level, so I guess that counts.  This is a B+ for those who love FF music, probably a C- for anyone who doesn't.  I can't help but feel like they could have done so much more with it.  Character progression didn't seem to matter, the "quests" were just a bunch of songs thrown together, and the symphonic scores (and much more from the Tactics series) would have been nice.  Still, it was lots of fun and a great trip down FF memory lane.  Around 20 hours.
-  Dragon Age 2 (PS3) - A- (July 13).  Glad I played through this one again, as I enjoyed it far more the second time through.  Once you remove the hype and come in already knowing about the recycled environments, it really is a very good game.  Typical fantastic Bioware characters and dialog and a very good story.  32 hours.
-  Bloodmasque (iOS) - B+ (August 15).  What looked like a silly gimmick (importing your face into the game) turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable fighter/RPG.  Far more fun than it really had any right to be.
-  The Stanley Parable (PC) - B (I think) (October 20) Still not entirely sure what to think of this "game".  It's an incredibly unique idea, very funny, and quite entertaining.  It also wore thin for me pretty quickly.  I'm glad I played it and would recommend that everyone at least give it a shot. (2 hours)
-  Zen Pinball/Star Wars Pinball (iOS) - A+. (October 21)  I'm going to go ahead and put this one on my finished list.  While it can never truly be "beaten", I told myself I'd consider it beat once I had the Top 10 local scores on every table, which I do.  An awesome game that I'm sure I'll keep playing for a long time to come.  100 hours (and counting)
-  Diablo 3 (PS3) - A-. (October 28).  I think I actually prefer PS3 to PC, it plays much smoother.  Beat with a Monk this time, which now makes 3.5 times through the game.  22 hours.
-  Galaga Legions DX (PS3) - B.  (November 2).  Quite a fun diversion.  Reminded me of a mix between Einhander and Yars Revenge.  About 2 hours.
-  Typing of the Dead:  Overkill (PC) - B.  (November 23).  Utterly ridiculous and unrepentantly vulgar, but really quite a lot of fun.  4 hours
-  Puppeteer (PS3) - A.  (Dec 7).  Came entirely out of left field, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The style, the platforming, the difficulty, the incredible artwork...all aspects were nearly perfect.  21 acts that took around 30 minutes each, so I'd guess around 10.5 hours.
-  God of War Ascension (PS3) - B- (Dec 27).  Still the best melee combat of any game, but the puzzles were simply annoying this time around.  Maybe it's just franchise fatigue, but the huge setpieces really didn't seem as impressive this time around either.  8 hours.
-  Brothers:  A Tale of Two Sons (PS3) - A (Dec 30).  A bit of a slow starter, but develops an absolutely wonderful story.  One of the most beautiful and touching games I've ever played.  3 hours.

Currently Playing
-  Thief Gold (PC)

Played and Gave Up On
-  Tera (PC) - A very fun combat system, but got really grindy towards the mid-levels.  Never could get a handle on the crafting system either.  32 hours.
-  Witcher 2 (360) - I tried...this one's just not for me.  A decent map or quest tracking systems would have been a lifesaver, but it was an exercise in frustration without one.  Story didn't grab me much either.  8 hours.
-  Asura's Wrath (PS3) - A unique game, but where games like Bayonetta and El Shaddai were brilliant in their weirdness, AW was just...boring.  Got about halfway through before losing interest.  3 hours.
-  The Secret World (PC) - An interesting approach to MMO's, but the lack of levels ended up leading to a lot of frustration.  I always felt underleveled and annoyed because nothing was ever explained well in-game.  Plus, the setting (zombies...ugh) didn't interest me at all.  24 hours.
-  Persona 4 Golden (Vita) - I found P4 to be remarkably dull.  It felt like a carbon copy of P3, which I was 'meh' on to begin with.  4 hours.
-  Gravity Rush (Vita) - Interesting concept, but got kinda boring pretty quickly. 2 hours
-  Mass Effect 3 (PS3) - Not interesting enough to play through again, methinks. 10 hours
-  Anno 2070 (PC)
-  Settlers 7 (PC)
-  Skyrim (PC) - Funner with mods, but still gets kinda dull.  30 hours.
-  Fire Emblem (3DS) - Don't know why I keep trying these...they never click.  4 hours
-  Demon's Souls (PS3) - Died 3 times just trying to get through the tutorial.  Definitely not a game for me.  1.5 hours.
-  Etrian Odyssey IV (3DS) - Fun, but the mapping got tiresome and the game just got really difficult.  I really just wasn't enjoying it much.  4 hours
-  Crimson Shroud (3DS) - Very cool tabletop-style game, but it was crazy hard and many of the mechanics weren't explained very well.  3 hours
-  Alan Wake (PC) - Interesting gameplay, but a little too creepy for my tastes.  2 hours
-  Devil May Cry (PC) - I liked the setup and atmosphere, but just can't do these twitchy games any more.  2 hours
-  Warhammer Quest (iPad) - A slick TBS dungeon crawl, but it got very repetitious towards the end.  8 hours
-  Final Fantasy V (iPad) - I can now say I've played all of them.  10 hours.
-  Dust:  An Elysian Tale (360) - Very slick presentation and one of the truly funniest games I've played.  Platforming and twitchy combat got a bit difficult though. 4 hours.
-  Soul Sacrifice (Vita) - A mish-mash of ideas, none of which are particularly well implemented. 1.5 hours
-  KOTOR (iOS) - A fantastic port of a stellar game.  Played it twice already though, so I only got about 8 hours in before getting distracted.
-  Dragon's Crown (Vita) - Maybe one of the most beautiful games I've ever played on any platform.  An incredible artistic achievement that was brought down by rather mediocre combat and endless grinding.  (10 hours)
-  Kingdoms of Amalur:  Reckoning (PS3).  The completionist in me won't allow me to not do sidequests, which makes this game a nearly endless grind.  (4 hours)
-  Assassin's Creed 4:  Black Flag (PS3).  Probably the best in the series when it came to the "on land" stuff like missions, assassinations, exploration, etc.  Unfortunately, I hated the ship combat.  (5 hours)
-  Brothers:  A Tale of Two Sons (PS3).  A very unique concept, but I couldn't wrap my brain around the double stick movement scheme.  It ended up becoming more frustrating than fun.  (2 hours)
-  Final Fantasy XIV (PC) - Loved this, but it stopped working on my PC (something to do with the launcher and IE not playing nice together), so I had to shelve it.  Probably over 100 hours between beta and full release.  A quite remarkable reboot of a broken game.
-  Final Fantasy IV (iOS) - Got to about the same point I always get to in these old-school FF remakes.  8 hours and I just get distracted by something else.
-  Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (PC) - Not nearly as fun as other arcade racers like Burnout.  2 hours.
-  Tales of Xillia (PS3) - Grindy as hell, not overly pretty, with a simultaneously buttonmashy and overly complex combat system.  5 hours.

Marking my territory here.  now I'll need to force myself to go back and (ac)count for all the games I played last year.

First finished:

Sniper Elite V2 on hardest difficulty.  overall, not to bad a game, although the wack-a-mole aspect to finding out enemy sniper positions and getting your sights dialed in started to wear on me towards the end.  I basically ran and gunned the last few missions once I knew the enemy layout.  I turned off the gore cam too.

Dead Pixels.  got this in a bundle somewhere I think.  kind of like what you would have played back in the nes days had Nintendo been more open to gore and violence.  basic rpg stuff plus lots of mindless killing.

Aliens Colonial Marines - despite how poorly this was received, I enjoyed it.  I can really only say it's worth picking up if you like the franchise and go in with a healthy amount of lowered expectations.  it's not going to win any awards and even manages to tarnish the work it's based on, which should relegate it to the bin of "better to have not released" ala DNF (coincidence that two of Gearbox's efforts be tied in this way), but despite all that, it does manage to evoke the same sense of the movie enough to warrant a look if you are a fan.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - I disregarded this originally as it felt like it was going to far into the fantastic fake technology aspect, but picked it up during a sale.  I wish I had grabbed this earlier.  it's a solid shooter throughout and the fancy cloaking tech and other futuristic gadgets change the game from the original but don't over shadow the core gameplay.  also, the gunsmith component should become the de-facto method for gun customization from now on.  I never once felt limited by a weapon's default build like you do in every other shooter with CoD-like upgrades.

Tomb Raider - best game I have finished so far this year (March) and one of the best I have played.  Highly recommended to any action fan, whether the original games, UC, Batman or AC.  solid game throughout.

Dishonored - Best version of Thief we'll get until Thief 4 comes out (hopefully).  eventually tired of the slow methodical approach and slaughtered a few end levels worth of bad guys as the end-game started to drag for me.

Bioshock Infinite - Good FPS, great story, beautiful world in both look and design.  It trims down from BS1/2's complexity;  it's arguable whether that's a good or bad thing.  Avoid the spoiler videos at all costs if you want the full ride.

Walking Dead - Best adventure game I've played.  Characters that you come to love, fight for, mourn for and are willing to die for.  one of the bleakest games ever made, yet ends in a way that no hollywood ending could hope to match.  highly recommended

Hotline Miami - Blood soaked frenetic action game that throws a mess of visuals and music at you.  As much art as the big name games, but certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

Prototype 2 - Much better than the first.  Better abilities and story.  It will always be better as they didn't stuff an end boss fight against some with unblockable hits with a hidden timer.

Thomas Was Alone - short and quirky game about AI's quest for escaping the confines of their system before getting erased by the system.  As played by
geometric figures.  Music is damn good, I'll give it that.

I am alive - This has the most realistic climbing system of all the free climbing games.  Plus, it's probably the only game where you can win a standoff with an empty gun.

Dead Island Riptide - Better than the first one, if that helps.  it's got more mods and doesn't degrade weapons as quickly.  the addition of the other characters as NPC's throughout the game is much better than the first one's and letting you do side missions for them to improve their survivability in siege missions is a nice touch.  Ending baddie is much better and doesn't leave you fighting a simple bullet sponge with one-hit kill attacks.

Dust: An Elysian Tale - beautiful looking 2d combat/exploration.  one of the best games this generation and should be brought up whenever the games as art argument comes up.  the character models and game world are highly detailed, combat is fast and easy to control and the voiceover work is great.

Mirrors Edge:  This one has an amazing sense of being in the game.  The free-running is always fun and given that you can actually speed run it in a little over an hour, done very well.

GTA V:  Best game in the series, despite some noticeable flaws, the biggest being how much of the side quests seem to have been pulled and put into MP.

How to Survive:  Fun action rpg-ish game.  Decent graphics if nothing too spectacular with good lighting effects and a nice crafting system.  Good lengthy game, but doesn't drag down at the end too badly.

Batman Arkham Origins:  God, what a beautiful mess.  What should have been a great game gets bogged down by multiple bugs and glitches and an overriding sense of been-there, done-that which really takes away from what should have been a competent sequel to AC.  I was drawn to this even though I grew to curse its every flaw.

Battlefield 4:  Game looks awesome, and the moments when you can freely see the Frostbite destruction engine working, it's great.   Too bad they didn't let you use it more.  The story line is a bit of a mess, as you would expect, but the gameplay is pretty much CoD with bigger maps, vehicles and better involvement with a squad.

Uncharted Golden Abyss:  Great handheld game and a perfect example of what can be done with the hardware when the developer knows how to best use it.  I've found it enjoyable enough to go through more than once and have a desire to make this my first platinum trophy on the new PSN ID.

Hotline Miami (PC Jan 3) - fun game, great soundtrack, lots of deaths (mostly mine)
BF3 campaign (PC Jan 18) - some ok firefights, played on hard and autosaves sucked
Spec Ops The Line (PC Feb 3) - meh, ok if you get it cheap, spare me the idiotic morality lesson
Crusader Kings II - lots and lots of play time.
Civ V - hundreds of hours here
Hitman Absolution (PC May) - really good, but I've decided I'm not so much into sneaking games anymore. I snuck around till I got noticed and then played FPS Shooter
Far Cry 3 (Aug) - great game, story got pretty whack.  Wish the exploration was better and islands felt more alive.
Sniper Elite V2 (PC) - action-y sniping.  Fun but not perfect.  Generous with the checkpoints  thumbsup
Fairway Solitaire (IOS)-
swordigo (IOS)
Tomb Raider 2013 PC - really good game, combat more fun that I expected, great production values and action
How to Survive (PC) - Solid B.  I enjoyed it.  With more depth and polish could have been an big hit.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - nice concept, artwork, story.  Fun control ideas.
Driftmoon RPG (PC) - nice indie game from Husband/Wife team.  Lots of story, not combat oriented at all.
bioshock infinite (PC) - good game, maybe not quite as good as hyped.  Pure action FPS unlike First game.
Dead Island Riptide (PC) - like the first one, no big changes.  Fun but dragged a bit at the end.
State of Decay (PC) - great game!
Rocksmith 2014 - have played about 50 hours in the last three weeks of december since I got it.  Really fun.

In Progress
always playing minecraft, terraria and swordigo (IOS) with the kids
Walking Dead PS3/ipad
Anno 2070 PC (almost done)
Van Helsing Adventures of

Played and put aside
Chivalry - Jan blah
Rock of Ages - Sep   boring

My meager accomplishments for 2012...only completed four games, which is by far my least in years. I think there were really two causes for the 'decline'...spending the first half of the year playing nothing but Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim (164 hours!), and having a few distractions in my personal life. I'm hoping to get back into the groove for 2013 though icon_cool

Assassin's Creed: Revelations - January 31
Dishonored - February 25
DmC - Devil May Cry (Demon Hunter) - March 19
God of War: Ascension - April 5
The Walking Dead - April 6
Bioshock: Infinite - May 14
Gears of War: Judgment - June 6
The Last of Us - July 7
Tomb Raider - August 24

Finished 19 games last year, which is (once again) less than the year before. Last year's post is here.

I'm sticking the Vita and PSP categories together since I'll be playing all my PSP games on the Vita anyway.

Games Finished in 2013

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Black Mesa
  • Borderlands
  • Crusader Kings 2 - A complete 75-hour grand campaign as Ireland.
  • Deadlight
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut - Finished with the Pacifist achievement.
  • Doom 1 - The original 3 episodes on Ultra Violence. Thy Flesh Consumed doesn't really count. Tongue
  • Doom 2 - All original 32 levels (which includes bonus levels) on Ultra Violence.
  • Doom 3 BFG Edition - Actually the second time I complete this game. It has aged very gracefully.
  • Gone Home
  • Lego Lord of the Rings - 100%
  • Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded
  • Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love For Sail - Got an itching to try one of the better received Larry adventures to see what they were like.
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • Neverwinter - Reached level 60
  • Scribblenauts Unlimited
  • Shadowrun Returns
  • The Stanley Parable
  • Tomb Raider - 100%
  • The Typing of the Dead: Overkill
  • The Walking Dead - All episodes
  • The Wolf Among Us- Episode 1

  • Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag - 100% completion and 100/100 Abstergo Challenges completed

  • Beyond: Two Souls
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Puppeteer
  • The Last of Us

  • Killzone Mercenary
  • Lego Lord of the Rings

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

Jan. 5 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution [360]
Excellent... got a bit formulaic midway through, but a good modern take on the original.

April 29 - Bioshock Infinite [PC]
A good game, but doesn't hold up to Bioshock OG.

May 30 - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood [PS3]

September 25 - Borderlands [PS3/PC]
Started on the PS3, transferred the save to my PC.  Finished it exactly a year from when I started it.

December 1 - Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea [PC]
The return to Rapture should have been much better.  Felt more like Infinite than the original.

December 15 - Gears of War 2 [360]
Weak beginning, finished strong.

Deadlight      - Had to watch some youtube videos to complete.  Started off great then just puttered out.
Dishonored    -  Really enjoyed the game and now need to play again with combat as my focus, hopefully a totally new game.
Far Cry 3       - Not sure why I finish games as most endings......    The game itself was a blast.
Dead Island  -  Got to Chapter 3 a long time ago and decided that I wanted to finish, once again, endings.....
Hitman Absolution -  Really enjoyed this one and will probably play again on a higher difficulty.
Limbo          - Never knew how close I was to finishing back when it was released.  Finally finished today.  Cool game.

Kotor 2 with tsl 1.8 mod. Great game!
Kings Bounty Warriors of the North.
System Shock 2-only took me 14 yrs to finish! I got stuck back in 1999. Thank you GOG
Kingdoms of Amalur. Solid game. Sad what happened to Big Huge Games.
Deus Ex Human revolution. Great game. Liked it so much I thought it was a little short. Didn't think the boss battles were quite as horrible as many others, but the second one was quite a pain. Doing the DLC now.
Finished the DLC Missing link. Surprised there was no more extra content for Deus EX HR.
Game of Thrones RPG. Fun game. Wish it had done better. Combat was a bit bland but still enjoyed the game. Don't know why they made every ending sad though.
Venetica-fun action RPG. And I got it for free on a New Egg deal
Torchlight 2-pretty fun, but just when I got going it was over, and I don't replay games.
Risen 2. Decent, but not quite up to PB specialness. Something was missing
AC3-worst game of the series by far imho, but I still had some fun playing it. Don't get the hatred for the Desmond parts. It also ran like a pig on my modest system.
ME3-most fun I've had with a game this year.
Tomb Raider 3. At least as good and maybe better than ME3!
X-Comm, Enemy Unknown. Continues my roll of excellent games. 3 in a row now. Really enjoyed it.
Dishonored-another great game, will play the DLC for sure when the price comes down.
Max Payne 3. Hated the check point save system at the start but got into it more as I went. They nailed the vibe perfectly imho. Sorry to hear this tanked in sales, I had a blast.
Vampire the Masqurade: Redemption. Too funny, thought I was buying Bloodlines. Kept wondering when I could change my clan. Duh. Oh well. It was ok for what it was.
Bioshock Infinite. Rather disappointed and let down by this game.
