Just found out that he will be getting a shiny red GBA SP for his birthday this weekend. I'm looking for recommendations on games for him. Of course, I may, uh, borrow it now and then...

My son is 8 and has enjoyed playing Crash Purple and now wants to play Spyro Orange. Those two are great choices. If your son is into Star Wars then any of those games are good as well. One other choice would be Mario & Luigi's Superstar Saga if your son is of the reading age. My son thought it was ok, but I loved it more.
Hope this helps.
P.S. My son's GBA-SP is silver. He now wants a red one. I told him to wait since the DS is coming out and his birthday is in December.

He's turning 6 on thursday. In that case, both Crash Purple and Spyro Orange are still good - even if he just plays the game by jumping around and collecting wumpa fruit and breaking crates. Both these games are very child friendly. I also think a new Fairly Oddparents game came out for the GBA-SP, but I'm not sure about the age requirement. There also might be a Spongebob game out as well. You could also try one of the Hamtaro games. It was my daughter that enjoyed those and not my son. One I just thought of is Godzilla Domination (an older game). Straight forward japanese monster bashing and chomping fun. My son enjoyed it last year. Hope these help.

Don't forget Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. It gets forgotten because it came out around the holidays last year. I think an 8 year old may like that.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga may be great for non-colorblind players, but much of the game depends on responding to red and green prompts and it it becomes virtually unplayable if you can't distinguish between the two colors.

You can get a lot of the sports games really cheap...the football, mx biking, surfing, snowboarding, espn x games, etc and they are all non reading, clean and fun games. My son loves all of them...also all of the Super Mario games and Pokemon games (Pokemon has a lot of basic reading...probably aimed at the 8-12 year old range).
There are also the classic NES games coming out...like Donkey Kong and other niche titles like Pokemon Pinball and Mario Pinball. And maybe the Sonic games in addition to Spyro.

Any of the Ham-Ham games are wonderful if your son is into that. My son (who is 9 now) has enjoyed all of them, especially the recent Ham-Ham Games that has Olympic style events.

Wow. We have a GBA in our closet to give to our son on his 5th birthday next week.
We already have one in the family. It was for his sister but she's not as much of a gamer as the boy looks to be.
He loves Warioware. Which is cool because the grown up in the house love it too. It requires some reading, but not much.
I might have to check out the Crash Purple and Spyro Orange games for him.
