Time for our second vote! Let's see if last month's runner up, Deus Ex, can pull off the win this month! Or will one of our newcomers take the title?

This poll is used to select the GT Game of the Month. Choose the game you'd like to play in March. Obviously anyone can vote, but please only vote if you intend to play the game you vote for.

For full details, see this thread.

Information on this Month's Games:
Deus Ex Game of the Year Edition (PS2, Win, Mac)
An older but highly regarded game from 2000. Received a 90 on Metacritic. Available for under $10 on Half.com. $9.99 on Steam. February's runner up.
Fable (Windows, Mac, Xbox)
A strong RPG entry from 2004. Received a 85 on Metacritic. Available for under $10 on Half.com
Tomb Raider Legend (PC, PS2, XBox 360, NGC)
Widely credited for revitalizing the Tomb Raider series in 2006. Received an 80-82 on Metacritic. Available for $8-$12 on all systems. $19.99 on Steam.
God of War (PS2)
Often included in "Best PS2 Game" discussions. 2005 release. Received a 94 on Metacritic. Available for under $10 on Half.com

FWIW, Fable can be finished in s little as 10 hours, depending on how much of the side-quest stuff you do.  Doubt it's noticeably longer than either TR: Legend or GoW.

Another month and another vote for Deux Ex.  I've already played GoW and have no interest in the other 2.

Thanks. I've edited the post.

By the way, I have the original version of Fable, but noticed that there is a "Fable Lost Chapters Platinum" version. Is that new version noticeably different/better than the first release?

I voted for DE. However, since I do not have my copy with me at the moment, I will play DE: Invisible War since that is still in my backlog.

Sounds like a plan! It's all good. I don't think we need to be picky about the details. smile

I haven't decided which one I want to vote for yet, but Deus Ex has jumped to an early lead.

I voted for Deux Ex, but I could be quite content with anyof the other 3 winning. All great games IMO.

I'd prefer Deus Ex as I've never finished it. Actually, of that list I only finished Fable, but I've played enough of TR and GoW to not want to go back to them.

FWIW, while Fable is technically backwards compatible on 360 (and available through their downloadable Xbox originals line IIRC) but in my experience plays *very* poorly emulated on 360.

Agreed.  The downloaded version through XBL is pretty much a mess.

I have Fable Lost Chapters on disc. I played about 3 hours of it on my 360 and other than sound occasionally geeking out it ran quite well. It wouldn't surprise me though if the Xbox Original -Harddrive based- version has issues that the disc version doesn't.

I played the disc version (can't remember if it was Lost Chapters or vanilla) and I thought the framerate was nigh unplayable.

I wonder if they cleaned something up for the Lost Chapters release.  Both Kevin and I played the original (Kevin on disc and me on harddrive) and it was a complete mess, while Kronovan played the Lost Chapters version and it was fine.  Hmmm....

Well I only did play about 3 hours, so I guess there's a possibility I didn't reach the portion of the game where framerates chug. It won't be the 1st game though -Xbox or 360- where others compained about slow or skipping frames and I didn't have issues; i.e. Mass Effect.

After one day of voting, Deus Ex has leaped to the front. It leads God of War 13-6. Fable has a small following, but Tomb Raider Legend is not getting any loving. The interesting battle could turn out to be between Fable and God of War for second place and a spot in next month's vote.

Two days to go.

What do people think about including a DS game in next month's vote? I'd also like to add a better XBox 360 game than I picked this month (Tomb Raider Legend).

I voted for DE. However, since I do not have my copy with me at the moment, I will play DE: Invisible War since that is still in my backlog.

That is the version I have, and though I'm still in a reborn Morrowind addiction, so I may not join in - I'm curious about the differences between the GOTY and Invisible War... is it the same game, and if not, why not?

I actually voted for God of War, because I never played it - various reviews made me think it would be too difficult for me.  I figured I might manage it with the Game of the Month Club, with lots of help from my friends, lol.  But I also have Deus Ex: Invisible War, and I rate it in my top 10 games I've played.  If I can't tear myself away from Morrowind in time, my Deus Ex would be available for borrowing, if anyone wanted to go that route.

I love this thread, btw - even when I'm not playing along, if the game is something I have played, it is fun to keep tabs on it and relive past glory (or ignominy).

Thanks G-Blitz, well done!   nod

Deus Ex is a long game.  For a shooter/RPG hybrid it is a pretty meaty game.  I'd say probably 20-30 hours unless you're just slamming through the game shooting everything in sight.

Invisible War is the sequel to the original/GOTY Deus Ex.  It is a good game but generally a lot shorter, with smaller levels.  Most people liked the original a lot better than Invisible War.

I tried to play Invisible War last week for the first time and the beginning didn't grab me at all. Just started Deus Ex up again last night and I was enthralled from the beginning. Can't really put my finger on why... For such a old game Deus Ex sure holds up well minus the faces which are terrible. If they could redo those I wouldn't have much complaints with the gfx. AI is better then I even remember. Playing on hard and it's kicking my booty.  thumbsup

I might be jumping ahead of things a bit, but I just took a quick look for a Deus Ex graphics mod, but nothing seems to jump out except for one that isn't done yet. However, there is this page, which details a better renderer for the game. Maybe that will help?

Also, this came up in a general mods search, and I thought it looked interesting enough that I'd post it here before I forget about it: Shifter Mod for Deus Ex.

In related news...

With 24 hours to go in the vote, Deus Ex leads God of War, 15-8. God of War kept pace with Deus Ex over the past 24 hours, but wasn't able to close any ground. Pundits are prognosticating that Deus Ex is a "Shoe in" to be the March Game of the Month. God of War leads Fable by three votes in a closer battle for second place.

Lastly, just a reminder that I've set up the poll so that you can change your vote. If you're rethinking things, feel free to switch.

Installed the shifter mod and the HDTP-Release1 which greatly improves some of the gfx. If it does go as being Deus Ex which it looks like it will I'd recommend installing both. The shifter mod is HDTP compatible so you shouldn't run into any problems using both. Thanks for the tip guys!  thumbsup

I believe the HDTP mod is unfinished, so that if you use it you'll get some of the old graphics mixed in with the new. The mixing seems to annoy some people while others don't seem to mind it at all.

Yup I did see the mixing but I'd rather have some stuff look better then nothing. From their forums it appears that they are still working on it. Which seems shocking to me considering how damn old the game is now.  saywhat

I'm betting you can still get decent frame rates on your rig with mods. The game uses the unreal engine, so it's quite scalable and efficient. I ran it on an Athlon 1.8Ghz  w/512 RAM and a craptastic Geforce 5700 a few years back and it ran fine with texture mods. And for anyone wondering about widescreen support, you don't need patches for that as custom resolutions and FoV are tweakable right from the Unreal engine console.

I've read two posts, both by the same guy, saying that you can mod the Steam version, but I've seen posts by a few other people saying you can't, unless you have the original disc and can use it to bypass the Steam version. Although I'm not sure the point of getting the Steam version if you have the original.

I've also read that you can't mod the GameTap version.

One other thought is Direct2Drive, which has the game for $9.95 as well. From what I've read their version appears to be mod-friendly, but it's hard to tell conclusively.

Some brave soul needs to go first.

I found my original disc, however, so I don't think I'll use the download route. It's not the Game of the Year version, but apparently I can patch up to the latest version, which is the same as the one that comes with the Game of the Year version (minus the development kit). I can then mod from there.

I've played this game several times (3 or 4 I think) so I'm kinda looking for a different experience this time through.  Guess what I found?

Deus Ex Melee-Only Walkthrough!

What are the basics?
  • Realistic difficulty level - ouch!
  • The only weapons are the knife, crowbar, baton, riot prod, sword, and the Dragon's Tooth Sword.

I'm completely excited to try to play it this way.  Usually I'm the steathy, sniper guy which makes the game a cakewalk by the 2/3 point.  I think this'll remain pretty challenging!

The few times I've tried to play DE I have tried to be more stealthy and up my electronics skills and stuff. In the interest of getting through the game this time, I was considering playing Gunther's way and just being a homicidal maniac with really good weapons skills.  Is there a downside to doing that?

I'm making the discussion thread now, and should have it up within the hour.

EDIT: All done. Here is the Deus Ex Discussion Thread.
