So thanks to the superb AAR by Lockdown, I've reinstalled GalCiv II, and am starting in on the campaign. My question is this, is there any benefit to buying and installing the expansions before finishing the original campaign?

Dark Avatar adds a great deal to the game, not least of which is an improved computer AI.
However, I don't know if any of it affects the original campaign in any way whatsoever. I feel really bad for not knowing the answer to your question, but I'm willing to bet someone on GT will know.

Considering how they've added a lot of the features into the base program it's hard to say how much you would gain from getting them. I've never played more than the first couple of campaign missions in GalCiv II, just played the open scenarios.
Just started playing with the Twilight of the Arnor expansion and am having a lot of fun with the unique tech trees and new techs. I may have made a mistake in starting during finals week.

Haven't looked I'm afraid. I've picked it all up directly from stardock.
Played a game as the Drath. Interesting techs they get. Seems like the research victory might be bugged. Ended up having to win a diplomatic victory.
I hate the mega pirate and spy events.

Re: Cheap GalCiv, I buy direct from totalgaming... you might want to look into buying a package of tokens, it usually winds up saving you some cash.

Just checked totalgaming.net, $44.95 or 5 tokens. A pack of 10 tokens costs $65, so the cash price would be roughly 32.50. A pre-order of the Twilight expansion would run you $24.95, or 3 tokens (cash price roughly $19.50).
That would leave you with 2 tokens left over, which could get you space rangers 2 if you're intrested (retails $20, 2 tokens = ~$13)
So, to sum up: Total financial commitment = $65, gets you GalCiv II gold, the Twilight expansion, and another game.
Vs Amazon $30 for GalCiv II gold, $25 to total gaming for Twilight. = $55.
Sum up, $10 more = another game.
If you've ever bought tokens from Totalgaming before though, refills are $60 for 10 instead of the $65 for 10 for the first pack.
Hmm. Looks like Amazon is slightly cheaper for you then if you don't want to get another game, or more expensive if you do.

Meanwhile... Brad takes all the new stuff in the upcoming expansion and kind of does a summary here, for those interested in what Twilight of the Arnor will include. http://forums.galciv2.com/?aid=170595

Yep. Everything is interchangable as far as I understand it. Keep in mind however, that you must own Dark Avatar in order to run Twilight. And you must own the Original GalCiv 2 (DreadLords) in order to run Dark Avatar. The Gold Edition (or whatever the heck it's called) includes both DreadLords & Dark Avatar.

You found a B$M which sells this for a decent price? Can't find it on Eb, GS, CC, or BB website.

I remember I had to give up on the campaign because once the Dread Lords showed up I just could not win that first map with them attacking everyone.

Cool news... I finally built a terror star in a game. It is really slow. Killing an entire star system is fun though.
Played a total of 3 campaign missions... rest have been open games.

I just re-downloaded the Dark Avatar expansion. Hey JarrodHK, when does the new expansion (Twilight) come out? Can I participate in the beta?

You can participate in the beta if you pre-purchase the new expansion pack through the GalCiv website. The final release is due in mid-January. -Autistic Angel

Yep like Autistic Angel says all you have to do is pre-order the expansion pack and you are in. Have to have the Dark Avatar pack as well.
Should be another version out tomorrow (thursday) or friday as well.

They should have thrown in galciv2 with the expansion bundle...or made a jumbo bundle...grumble. Luckily, a little (Lock) Guardian (Down) Angel is hooking me up with galciv2 so I only have to spend on the expansions.
