Game servers have been pounded into dust by the Steam release. I am Bobehm on uk1 (and now also texas3) if they ever get things up to speed.

I will probably stick with Texas3 for now.  Hopefully they unify the servers some day.

I think they get how steam worked - ie by releasing a load of steam keys on steam it would suck people in but they missed how huge steam is. I'm more confident than say with magicka that this dev will resolve issues

So yeah, this game is HARD.  Obviously I suck but even still.  I'm not sure if it's catching on with me yet.  I don't have much interest in the multiplayer.  Does the single player story get pretty good?  The levels seem to be randomly generated and the graphics are crisp but very plain and matrix-ish so I'm going to need this to have an interesting story.  I'm only on the second part of the first mission so it's still too early to tell.  Going to try the tutorial again and see if I can improve a little.  It has a bit too much of a "puzzle game" feeling for me.  Hopefully as I improve I'll see the tactics a little more easily.  Is there any penalty to losing guys?  It seems like I get a new team every mission so I really shouldn't worry too much about trying to make it through a mission without anyone dying right?

The MP works imho because it's turn based and you can play your turns as and when - i.e you don't have to be connected for your opponent to make a turn. Where it is failing is the server/popularity is just not currently capable of handling the load. They have a number of calls they make - do it correctly and it could be a stayer - do it wrong and it will rapidly fail

I don't have the game yet, and have a question.  Is there some type of "loadout" screen where you decide what type of soldiers and guns they have?  Or is it simply a mission based game where the computer gives you your troops, and you make due with them?  Same question for skirmish maps:  Are you given a certain amount of "points" to spend, and then you pick yourr team, or do you get one of each soldier type/gun type and just play with them?  Watching the videos, I am having trouble discerning how this works.

You can build custom matches with whatever.. but base games just give out a random mix then give same to opponent. (as far as I've seen.)

I do not know of a mode that let's each player pick their own loadout.

Campaign game - no loadout screens.  Solve the missions with what they give you.  Making it puzzle-like as Canuck mentioned, but it's Laser Squad Nemesis with puzzles.  smile

As to losing guys - the only penalty is in your final score.  You are given new guys each mission, because they are "vatforms" which I'm guessing is just another word for clones of some type.

Haven't played multi-player, yet, because of the server issues.

The Skirmish Generator allows you to specify how many guys with what type of guns (Machine Gun, Shotgun, Sniper, Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher) for each side.  There is also a randomise button for each team, if you want to go that route.

Instant Skirmish randomly generates sides.  1st Instant Skirmish I generated was Rocket Launcher, Shotgun Machine Gun vs 2 Rocket Launchers and 2 Machine Guns.  I got the 3-man team.

OK - that is good enough for me.  Sounds pretty good - I like having the random or set-up as you like choice there.  Thanks.

One other thing.  Each of the maps in the campaign missions have a seed number.  Once you've completed a campaign mission, you can replay those missions on any map - random or specify the seed number, if you wish.  Haven't messed around enough to see if the seed numbers carry over to Skirmish mode also.

Damn. How did I never hear about this game? Trying out the demo tonight... Guess that's what I get for my months long PC gaming sabbatical.  icon_redface

If I end up getting it, does anyone want the extra free copy it comes with?

*My initial demo impression is it's fun, but I... suck at it (as I do at most games icon_razz). I think I'll keep tinkering with the demo for a while. Why can't someone put an indy dev like this to work on an X-COM remake that's really still a tactical strategy game?  icon_smile

OK will  keep that in mind if I take the plunge.  icon_smile I finally cracked the first demo mission. I'm still a bit lost on some more advanced things and sometimes I don't quite read the symbols/schematics/diagrams properly.

Digging through the forums, found a nice fan Wiki that includes several helpful guides, tips etc.:

Some cool events like buildings blown in pixelicious fashion...

The view often reminds me of the Arcade classics Bezerk and Frenzy. Just need to hear "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!"  icon_cool

I completed the demo mission 2 just barely, with the escort-ee's two escorts getting offed, and two of my 3 tactical folks dead. She escaped on the next turn.

The random generation of the maps is quite impressive. It was fun to just keep regenerating a demo mission to see how it differed each time. Sometimes subtle differences, and sometimes pretty drastic.

I wish I had waited to play the demo before buying this on sale, since I really do suck at it.  I can only get destroyed so many times before I give up and quit playing.

I'd love your code if still available. Blackjack is on the fence for this one. It definitely is a polarizing game.

Blackjack is just too exhausted from Space Marine to make any decisions right now.  icon_smile I do like what I've played of the demo. I just have this fear of getting a game with a 55-mission campaign and getting stuck on, like, Mission 3.  icon_redface

Okey dokey, the free key goes to Dante!

And yes, Blackjack, that was basically what happened to me.  It's quite sad, but apparently I just have to admit that I suck at this game.  icon_frown  Maybe some day I will pick it back up and see if I can get any further in it.

Maybe you can boot it up and post a screenshot of the mission map? Perhaps we can help you figure it out.  icon_smile It'll give us something to chat about here.

I know the maps regenerate each time (I assume campaign maps do that, judging from the demo), so I guess that'd be more useful in terms of seeing what you're up against enemy wise, rather than the map layout itself.

Thank you to EngineNo9 for the free copy, and Blackjack who let me know it was available!

I can't play again until Friday, but I look forward to getting kicked around by the game's AI. I played the escort mission 4 more times, simply because it was so fun, and lost 2 out of 4 instances. NOT an easy game.

BTW, Blackjack, the "Skirmish Generator"allows you to determine your team's weapon loadout, map size, turn limits, enemy #s, their AI difficulty, their weapon loadout, etc. Good way to level the playing field and enjoy the game if these 50 campaign missions become brutal. Simply give your team sniper rifles, and the enemy shotguns!

There's apparently a Play by E-mail option in multiplayer. I think I could get into it. I find turn-based games online (the few I was able to do that with years ago) tend to get a bit exasperating in terms of the amount of time necessary to complete a game.

This review seemed to find the single player AI erratic:
http://www.thereticule.com/?p=918
Quote
The singleplayer acts as an interlude for the multiplayer, which is fortunate as AI opponents are often laughably inconsistent. Although easy enough to dispatch in opening missions, their difficulty then proceeds to rise and fall at the rate of a rollercoaster. In the grand scheme of things though, the schizophrenic obscurity of the AI is somewhat irrelevant, as the main lure of this game is that of the multiplayer experience.

Winning a match is all the more satisfying when you’ve had to dispatch a human opponent in order to do it, and with a tiered levelling system in place you’re unlikely to encounter the same erratic difficulty curve that you found through the singleplayer.

Yeah, the fact that it uses random maps even in the campaign was another reason I decided to quit.  While I like the chance to have random map skirmishes later on, I would rather the single-player missions be carefully created and balanced to the growing player skill.

Hey I just bought it, sent my extra copy to a bud at another forum who was keen on it.  icon_smile Lets talk some campaign shop here real soon.  icon_smile

Space Marine's next-to-last campaign and MP are battering my self esteem. This probably will too, but at least I can take my time, right?  icon_smile

Turns out it was half price for a weekend in early August. Too bad I was on my gaming sabbatical.  icon_redface

*It took 2 or 3 map regeneration tries but I just barely managed to complete Campaign Mission 1. Weeeeee! (I'm easy to please at this point). I can see from Mission 2 that it's not just going to be "clear the map" every time, which is nice.

So this was historic for me, campaign-wise -- the normally blundering friendly AI units all but took over this map, aggressively going after the red guys. Except for my shotgun unit taking down one enemy early, I didn't really have to do anything but watch (well, I did make some maneuvers; they just weren't ultimately necessary):

*The yellow friendly in the lower middle shot that red guy in the face. On the next turn, the red guy in the middle moved quickly left and almost got away (well, was walking into a crossfire of sorts), but the lower yellow guy shot him in the back. That AI guy was nasty.  icon_twisted

I got a couple MP invites while logged in just now but the invites disappear in about 3-4 seconds.

A bud pointed out Frozen Synapse is now available as a Humble Indie Bundle:
http://www.humblebundle.com/
Quote
Pay what you want. Frozen Synapse normally costs $25, but we're letting you set the price! The Frozen Synapse soundtrack is also included with your purchase (normally $6). Plus, if you pay more than the average price [$4.37!], we'll throw in the entire Humble Frozenbyte Bundle — a $45 value!
...
We don't use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely. There is no time-limit on your downloads.

You can support charity. Choose exactly how your purchase is divided: between the developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Child's Play Charity. Also, if you like this deal, a tip to the Humble Bundle itself would be much appreciated!
A real steal, for a good cause, imho.  icon_smile

According to the site, they've sold 32,000+ to this point, and it's going on for a couple more weeks.

*There's a brief post about it in our steals/deals section here, just thought I'd highlight it here once.

Frozen Synapse: Red Expansion Out Now
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/frozen-synapse/1224897p1.html
Quote
Frozen Synapse: Red adds co-op, new campaign missions, and new multiplayer modes to the already robust little strategy game.

Perhaps the most important new feature of all is the addition of Red Mode. That's right, the formerly entirely blue-tinged game can now be played with a slightly more angry tone. Oh, and there's mobile cover shields that can be used to bounce grenades in fun ways, the addition of co-op in every campaign mission (including those in the original release of the game), and a new multiplayer mode called "Upload" in which you defend your hackers while trying to eliminate your opponent's.

Spending a mere $25 gets you two copies of Frozen Synapse so you can share with a buddy, but the expansion is $10 for a single copy. Fret not frugal gamers. Those of you who only have the original game will still be able to play Red's new online features with any friend who does own the expansion.
