Well, my launch-day 360 finally died so now I can fit in with the rest of the cool crowd. I'm just glad it waited long enough for the retroactive warranty coverage deal to happen.

I was watching Children of Men on the HD-DVD player when the screen froze and I couldn't hit STOP or MENU or anything. So I powered it down and back on and saw the red lights flashing.

I checked the power supply and the light was green so that was fine.

Then I unplugged the HD-DVD player from the back of the console and tried again and this time it powered back on properly.

I plugged the HD-DVD player back in and it worked and I started watching the movie again. 5 minutes later it froze again but this time it powered off and back on properly. 5 more minutes of movie and it crashed and wouldn't come back to life no matter what I tried. So I called late last night and they're going to send me the repair box.

I'm wondering if there's any chance the HD-DVD player is the culprit somehow. I've been watching regular DVDs and gaming just fine on the 360 for months but this is the first HD disc I've tried in quite a long time. The way the system was choking on the movie and freezing made me wonder if it couldn't keep up with the demands of the high res movie or something. I dunno.

So now that I'm in the club, what's the secret handshake?

Ugh, that sucks, but welcome to the club anyway. I'm truly convinced that given regular use, all launch 360s will fail. Hopefully, newer units won't be as afflicted.

I hope you can live without worms for a few weeks!

Mine did a random freeze twice last night.  Once during GH II and once during the NCAA 08 demo.  There's a small beep, then the entire system completely locks.  I booted it back up without a problem (no RROD), but it kept doing it.

This, combined with the single RROD I got last week, is starting to make me really nervous.  frown

You might be better off trying to send it in now before the Fall rush of great games.

There's one thing you can do to cut down on wait time.  FedEx the unit to MS.  Especially since the repair is free, it's the only cash you're out.  It saves you  nearly a week, depending on how fast you ship it.  You can even do it if they've already sent out a box.  To me, it was worth the extra $$.

and save the box they send it back in just in case you ever need to ship it in for repairs again.

That's not a bad idea... I'll consider it.

On the one hand, I won't be too put out by the wait. I just got a new PC so I'm happy gaming on that for a while. (Tomb Raider Anniversary is totally fantastic, plus I'm just getting into STALKER.) And I can just hook up my old DVD player as a temporary replacement for my 360 DVD player...

Then again, that'll look like crap on my HDTV compared to the upscaling 360 HD-DVD player.

And I will miss my nightly Worms fix... although a couple weeks cold turkey will probably do me some good. biggrin

Hmmm, decisions, decisions...

What does MS do about the 2-4 weeks of Xbox Live service that we're out when our system fails? Anything? I didn't think of it until after I hung up but I could've raised a stink. Has anyone tried?

When it's returned, it comes with an apology letter and a card giving you an additional one month of XBL Gold service.
