I just CANNOT play a shooter on a console or PC without using Inverted axis.  Up has to be Up for me...what about you?

Holy cow, inverted all the way. I've often wondered what's wrong with people who play "normal".

wait a minute...if you play where "Up is Up," then you're not really inverted.  with inverted axis, you move the control up to look down, like flying an airplane.  "normal" would be moving the stick/mouse up and looking toward the sky.  the difference does get confused sometimes because not all games go the same way by default, and the typical option to switch is "Invert Axis" regardless of which way you're switching.

that said, i can only play inverted...move the mouse of stick forward and i want to be looking at the ground.  my mind is so stuck that way that i really have a hard time if i have to switch.  it could very well come from all those years of playing flight sims before FPS games were available...

Inverted... too many years playing flight sims prior to Quake conditioned me for back==up / forward==down

Inverted for all of my fps, also inverted for any game that has a camera that I can pan around, and of course for flight sims.

My wife plays normal for Halo2, and when I pick-up her controller to try and help her through a tough spot, the normal config wreaks havoc on my brain.

Yes, if "up must be up" that means you like normal controls. You move the stick up, the view moves up.

Inverted means "up must be down". Stick moves up, viewpoint moves down.

Personally, I like things to make sense... I like my viewpoint to do what I'm telling it to do. Thus, if I move my stick up, I expect my viewpoint to look in the corresponding direction.

As an interesting anecdote, the only reason airplane controls were inverted was to make it easier for the pilot to pull out of a dive. The first airplanes had the correct orientation... but then people figured out it's much easier to pull a stick towards you then away from you when plummeting towards the earth.

The main justification I hear from people for why in the world they would want their controls to do the opposite of what they're telling them to do is this:

They imagine that the stick is attached to the back of someones head. If you push down on it, it makes the head look up.

To this, I always respond "well, then if you push the stick left, then the head would turn right... so why don't you invert that too". To this, they start to say something, stop, think, and say "Well that wouldn't make sense! Why would I want pushing the stick left make my view turn right?!?". Which was exactly my point about their argument.

Yeah I think we need to make sure our terms are correct:
Normal = Up is up, down is down
Inverted = Aircraft style controls

That's how I usually see games label them anyway, but I am convinced more people play inverted than normal.

This definition is my assumption as well and is how I voted, although I see the definition flip-flopped in some games too.

I think it's exceedingly stupid to assume your way is "right" and the other "wrong," much like I think it's exceedingly stupid and lame to attempt to make logical arguments for or against what is ultimately a matter of preference and nothing more (yes, I'm looking at you, flyinj).

In short, some people experienced inverted and it stuck/felt right, some people experienced normal and it stuck/felt right.

The end.

That said, inverted controls make baby Jesus cry.

Bah.  I didn't express the thought in my head very well at all, did I?

I think controls are one of those physical things that are just stupid to fight over -- like right-handed people mocking left-handed people, or left-handed people getting all self-righteous and pretending they're more 'artistic' or something from right-handed people.

That's all I meant, really.  But that quote's going to haunt me regardless of what I say.

I always use normal.  Maybe that is why I suck at FPS on the console.

Still, I refuse to become one of the inverted!

It's strange, I play Flight Sims on the computer more than any other type of "game", which of course has inverted axis'.  But when it comes to fps games it must be on Normal for me.

that's funny, Interloper - since i was just going to say - "i don't get it - i've never played flight sims, but as soon as i stepped into the control-setting gizmo on my first FPS (Halo) - it was inverted all the way - just came naturally to me."

don't tell me Lord Ebonstone is right  (well, the second time he weighed in - not the snippet that warning will bribe him with someday!)  oh, my...

INVERTED!

Someone here said it wreaks havoc on their brain to play "normal".  I'm the same way.  Too many flight sims and space simulators growing up.  My brain is definitely hardwired to "Inverted"!

I can play either way but as an old flight simmer, I much prefer "inverted" when using a joystick.   I don't think I invert my mouse control though.  I'll have to pop in HL2 and make sure.

Uhhh... I can't tell unless I am playing... I'll start playing a game and the controls may be wrong and I'll switch them and everything is good... but I have no idea which way I play.

I play a lot of flight sims yet I don't have a problem switching to non-inverted for FPS.  Mechwarrior type games I play inverted.

Almost always the default is always set to my preference anyway.

I think I'm inverted, but after reading through this thread I'm no longer sure :?

All I know is: pull the stick/mouse back and I better be climbing/looking up. Push it forward and I better be looking down/diving.

Otherwise my Universe makes no sense..., or less sense.

Thanks for puting my mind at ease disarm. That sounds about right. I never played that may space/flight sims, but that has always seemed more "natural", especially in FP games (shooters or RPGs - played a lot of those). Anyway I've voted now.

I kick all my friends asses at Halo 2 and I play with inverted controls.

But!!! I still play FPS/Action games on the PC with regular. Having mouselook on means I play normally.

But if I'm playing on a console with analog sticks, it's inverted all the way. It just feels more natural to me.

I play first person shooters on normal.

Console games, I have to control the head with the stick.  So when I pull down, the head has to rise, like the stick is in the back of the head.

Normal for the typical FPS (and I think for third-person shooters).
Inverted for flight/mechs, etc.

just remember, when you actually vote - this is Console Gaming...

i don't know enough about PC gaming to know, but i'm wondering how there could be an inverted control with a mouse/ keyboard, or is everyone talking about a gamepad?

also, for the record - i play inverted, and i kick no one's ass on Halo (well, almost no one... there are some  ) - however, the best player i know - who we all play against, at once, btw - plays inverted.  so there! biggrin

"inverted" on a PC refers to moving the mouse, gamepad, or joystick controls...move the mouse forward and you look down, just like the stick on a console controller.
