But it's a MMO?!?:

Quote
Like Capt. Mal Reynolds stumbling in after a bar fight, the short-lived but much beloved sci-fi series Firefly will soon make an unexpected return, not as a TV show, but as a massively multiplayer online game.

Now that's shiny.

Multiverse, maker of a free MMO-creation platform, plans to announce Friday morning that it's struck a deal with Fox Licensing to turn the show into an MMORPG in the fashion of Star Wars Galaxies or Eve Online.

The "Browncoats," as Firefly's most devoted fans are known, have been campaigning to bring the show back almost since the moment it was canceled in late 2002. Now they'll get their wish, albeit in a new form.

"We see virtual worlds as an extraordinarily promising new entertainment medium," said Adam Kline, Fox Licensing's vice president of media enterprises in an e-mail. "We believe Multiverse can deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans."

I'm not sure yet if this is good thing or not. I'll let it sink in for a bit and decide later.

How I wish this was in the Off-topic forum and was about TV.  icon_cry

Not interested in a Firefly MMORPG. Maybe an adventure game, though.

Considering how long it takes to develop MMO's - we'll all be dead before this is released anyway.

The Firefly universe was interesting, but I liked the show for the characters and ship.  I'm really not that interested in fighting rats to level up just cause it's Firefly.  Like Old Negus said, give us a good adventure game where we can interact with the main characters, then I'll be interested.  As big as Firefly is, I can't see that big a crowd interested in this game.  Maybe I'm being naive, but I'm thinking even most hardcore browncoats would take a pass on a generic MMORPG.

As much as I love Firefly I have to admit this sounds like a bad idea. I've played in some Serenity roleplaying games and they've been less than stellar.  What made the show was the crew, and without the main crew it was just 'meh'.

That sucks.  I would love nothing more than to see Firefly continue in some form, but have zero interest in an MMORPG.

Galaxies kicked ass early on..  I had tremendous fun in that game for awhile, even with the frustrating PvP, it was still big and immersive in feel.  One of the few "Recent Crop" MMOs I actually enjoyed.  The then the PVP seemed to just get weaker and weaker with the lag and other crap.

Dude, no it did not kick ass early on. I played it for a year starting the week after it was released and it was lifeless and devoid of fun. Plus, running everywhere was teh suck. Then they added vehicles around November but made them rapidly deteriorate and cost a ton to fix so naturally all of us exploited the "transit bug" where you whip out your vehicle right before you change planets which repaired it automatically. SOE then made one ruthlessly stupid and ridiculous design decision after another and a bad game miraculously became even worse.

As for Firefly, meh. icon_twisted

I never did all that nonsense.. I powerleveled the first ever defense skill "Stacker" up, ruled the server in PvP, then quit when the lag and bugs got so annoying I couldn't tolerate it anymore.

Heh.

I heard the space combat is fun.  The lightspeed expansion part.

Is that true?

It's remotely fun (unlike the rest of the game). Too bad it's still item based. Somebody with a better gun/shield WILL kick your ass.

Hand puppet Serenity

Major spoilers if you haven't seen the movie, but damn funny.

God that is so true. So funny, so true, and so many reasons why Serenity sucked told succinctly by hand puppets. Kudos. thumbsup

A firefly MMO would probably be pretty cool if done right. To bad that Multiverse engine type looking thing, looks like shit.

So after chewing on this for a bit, I can't help but feel that this is just in the vein of every other space RPG.  You won't really be interacting with the crew, which is what made the TV show/movie cool, and if you are, it would be in a forced/weird way.  Get some quests from Kaylee?  No thanks.

So, what you have is two forces at war with each other in an old west-y type setting with lasers.  I mean, it could be intriguiging, but they would have to do something really different in order to get my attention.

But the only problem is there aren't even two sides... it's entirely one-sided.

So the factions end up being the lawful forces (damn I forget their name in the series), or just the 'everyone else'.  Unless you want to be a Reaver, of course  eek

I think Babylon 5 would be much more fertile ground for an MMOG.

Not exactly.  You're thinking in terms of MMOs with a focus on some massive war.  There is no big war in the Firefly universe, that's done and over.

Everyone in the Firefly universe is out for themselves and maybe their crew and friends.
