I think most people would agree that Okami was one of the best games on the PS2 last year (and perhaps all-time) but how many people actually managed to finish it?  I for one know that I am a looong way from the end and I stopped playing at least 6 months ago.  I can't understand why because I was absolutely floored by it.  Who else loved it but never got around to finishing it?

::raises hand::

I really think that if Okami had been 20 hours, it would be one of the greatest games I have ever played on any system.  Unfortunately, they felt the need to drag it out into the 40+ hour range.  Everything after about 25 hours just felt like padding to me, and I pretty quickly lost interest.   The story became rather dull, the puzzles were uninspired, and the "wow" factor of the graphics started to wear off when they recycled artwork for different areas.

I think that it was still a solid A game, but the length keeps it from being the all-time classic that it could have been.

EDIT:  It's still the only game I've ever made a post like this about.  smile

Man, it's one of those games that I shower with admiration....but I'm about 35 hours in, and not really close to the end (I'm a slow gamer).

Okami was definitely way too long. It should have ended in the 15-20 hr range. I know that hours 15-25 or so were not that great. I was proud of myself for finishing it.

Still, best Zelda clone I have encountered.

I got bored around 12 hours, and since I misplaced my PS2 memory stick I doubt I'll ever finish it.

if there's a single thing that helped get me to the end of okami (& i agree it went on too long for it's own good), & almost prevented me from finishing twilight princess, & is making it hard for me to get thru ng:s right now (i'm about halfway), it's how much i like the protagonist. hence, my 'columbo theory of game finishing', based on the concept that, if the main character is likeable/interesting enough, that alone can usually help me see my way thru the dull/senseless/nasty/repetitive sections of a game. obviously, this is pretty subjective. in the case of okami, i liked both amaterasu & issun enough to want to know what happened to them in the end (&, personally, i thought it was worth it)...

(i've named my theory after columbo, because, rewatching the series the last couple months, i've come to appreciate that, no matter how stupid & corny the plot is (& most of them are), each episode is still worth watching simply because of the fact that columbo's in it, period - the series is sorta the epitome of protagonist likeability uber alles storytelling...)

I agree that Okami is

A) completely freakin brilliant
and
B) 10 or 15 hours too long

I really should go back and finish it. I think I'm only about 5 hours from the end.

Love the art, hate the combat.  Someday I might come back to it.

Finished it.
Loved it.
Didn't mind the lenght much.
The combat was ok for the most part, but I agree that comparing it to Zelda, the latter surpases, imho, by far Okami in this area.

Although the boss battles were fun, specially against Orochi. smile

Alas, Clover's dead, so chances of a sequel (which was left somewhat open in the ending...) quite slim now...frown

I just started playing it for the first time. Loving it so far. Definitely influenced by Zelda, but that's certainly not a bad thing.

I can already tell it's going to be a long one. I'm 7 hours in and have only cleared the first dungeon.

Absolutely. Those mechanics were made for the Wii.

I beat it and enjoyed it the whole way through.  I didn't think it was too long at all.

I got 25 hours in and then put it down I guess sometime in February. I do want to go back and finish it.  The story seemed to be implying that I was near the end, but it didn't completely make sense because I was still missing a few brush techniques (one which I knew where to get but hadn't figured out how to obtain).  Maybe the game is longer than I think.
