So, I just got Guitar Hero (Thanks, Devil!), and I have that same look of wonder that I had with Katamari Damacy.  Honestly, this is what games need:  Easy to learn, hard to master, solid gameplay, not too frustrating, and it makes you FEEL like you're playing the guitar, even though you're just getting Cheeto stains all over the frets.

I just played "Cochise" for the first time.  Just...wow.  What a great game, all the way around.

True that!  Wait till you can play co-op in Guitar Hero II.  What a great game...

I keep looking at it and wishing I could like it cuz of all the good crap said about it, but knowing I never listen to music at home, at work, or in my car makes me leary of any game centered around music.  Plus, a 50 year old sitting around wacking on a fake plastic guitar I think would cause my wife to think I have truly gone off the deep end with all this gaming stuff.  My father-in-law already thinks I am an immature idiot for playing any of these games, so...

You know, most of these songs, I haven't really heard of.  But, have you ever, at any point in your life, played air guitar, even once momentarily?  If you have, you should like Guitar Hero.

I never played Guitar Hero until recently, and that was at a store.  It was a magical moment for all people involved, quite unlike most other games, we just knew this one had to be "Owned".

Hence, my kids get Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2 + 2 guitars as part of their Christmas gift lineup.  I can't help but be anxious for them to open em up.

oh, and I have yet to try GH.  My local EB has a PS2 with it available for 'trying' but I have yet to consider it.  Since my quest for a Wii (and possibly a DS lite) has failed, I may be sucked in by the weeks end......

I have tried it multiple times, both GH1 and GH2 and just don't get it.  I really don't like the controller at all as it cramps up my hand trying to keep it positioned on the buttons.  Neat idea, but not for me at all.

Bask in the greatness of GH as GH2 just doesn't do it.  Poor covers and poor song selection sink that one for me frown

The beauty of GH2 is the multiplayer and the easier hammer-ons/offs. In most other aspects, however, I prefer the original GH.

Are you essentially saying you liked the songs better in GH1?  Or is there something else you were thinking of?

More or less.  icon_biggrin

While GH2 had more songs, a bunch of them were crap. There are only a few songs from GH1 that I didn't like. And the covers in GH1 were better.

Plus, I heard that the solos are more insane in GH2.  You should see my eyes bug out trying to play Crossroads on Normal.  I don't think I could handle much more.

The biggest improvement in GH2, in my opinion, is practice mode which lets you repeatedly play different sections of songs over and over again, at varying speeds.  Really helps for solos and other sections.

If you don't like music you won't like music games, I think that goes without saying.

I went back to guitar hero after playing guitar hero II and boy, it really shows up on how much they improved the timing in GH2. GH1 seems very clunky compared to GH2.

Maybe I should have skipped getting them GH1?  Or is it still worth having both?

Well, I'm enjoying GH1 quite a bit, and will probably move on to GH2 only when I'm done with all the songs from GH1.  So you have that.

I think my favorite song has to be "Heart Full Of Black."  I accidentally used my Star Power on that song, because I got so into it that I yanked the guitar up involuntarily.

My wife even played it (she's terrible at video games, and has never played an instrument) and, while she was bad at it, said she liked it.

If you started with GH2, do yourself a favor and grab the original GH.  The hammer-ons and whatnot are a little bit harder, but the incredibly better soundtrack is worth it.

"Even Rats" 4 life, playa.

I'll add that for anybody serious about playing hard and the extreme (or insane, or whatever its called) difficulty, there's basically no ramping-up in GH2.  They sort of expect you to already use all 5 buttons.

So if you want to start using that 5th button, and while practice mode is indeed useful, the original GH does a MUCH better job of slowly introducing the 5th button until it makes the button common-place in songs, rather than throwing you into a song with a million of those suckers.

I've started playing through the bonus songs in GH2, and man are they terrible.  "Pangea" is not only my least favorite GH song in both games, but ranks right up there with the worst songs I've ever heard.  Ever.

At least the bonus songs in GH were fun to play.  The ones in GH2 are stinkers all the way around.

I'd say it's still worth getting both, but definately start with GH1 and work up.  Starting with GH2 and going back to 1 is a tough transition.
