So I'm finally going to be getting a new pc and I was wondering what are some good games from the past 5 or so years?
I already bought:
Half-Life 2
UT 2004
Call of Duty 2
Battlefield 2

I'm looking at getting Fear, but I wanted to know if it is actually scary or not.  If it is, I'd love to play through it!  Thanks for your opinions!  I am damn excited about this whole thing if you couldnt tell!

edit:  wow, I just re-read the title... PC GET!

I'll add Far Cry to my demo list.  I've seen it on G4 a few times and have been pretty interested.

Speaking as someone who thinks FarCry is one of the best shooters ever released, I'd have to warn you that I thought the demo was terrible.  So terrible, in fact, that the only reason I ever bothered with the full version was that a friend of mine picked it up and I decided to give it a second shot.

If you enjoy the FarCry demo at all, you'll *love* the full game.  If you don't like the demo at all, I'd still definitely recommend borrowing the full version from a friend.

Well... I loved the FarCry demo.  Loved it.  Played it 3 or 4 times in anticipation of getting the game.  Then I got the game and loved the first several levels.  At least until the 400 mph swarming one-hit kill monsters started replacing the human grunts.

It's worth the $20 for it most everywhere. May be able to get it at Best Buy for 15 after one of thier coupons $5 off 20 or more, but you would have to look around the store to see if they still have them.

I loved FarCry right up to the last level.  Then it turned into Serious Sam and caused me much frustration.  Nearly ruined the whole experience for me.  It's still a great game that still taxes even the most demanding systems due to all the updates the game engine has received over the years.

Half-Life 2 just needs to be experienced.  There's no excuse not to.

UT2004 is still my favorite FPS, but YMMV if you can't find a great core of online players.  Met my favorite GT members playing that game!

Yeah, that's about where I'm at on Far Cry too.

It was great.. for 3 or 4 levels.

Then it started sucking something fierce.

It's pretty dang sporadic.  Usually we'll just all be on GTalk and then some night just say like, "Hey, let's play a game of DoD:S."

If you have GTalk, I can add you and tell you whenever we play   biggrin

So now thanks to the company I am ordering from not having the original CPU I wanted in stock, I am going to get an AMD Athlon 64 X32 4200+ dual core processor.  From what I have read, this is a much better way to go for gaming.  Anyone here have this processor or a different CPU in the X32 line?

If you guys are complaining about Far Cry being too tough (that seems to be the implied critique even if it's not overtly stated) then you must be new to FPS's or just bad at them.  I beat the whole game on the 2nd hardest difficulty (of 5 or 6 I believe) without too much trouble.  I had to reload several times on the last boss fight, but that was about it.

Ouch your sarcasm burns my soul.  But seriously, Far Cry is not that hard, especially compared to other FPS's.  I'm not buying the "it's too hard excuse" unless as I said before you are new to or bad at FPS's.  In which case you tone down the difficulty, get some practice, or avoid the genre altogether.  As for MissingLink's complaint I don't see how Far Cry is so radically different in any of those aspects from other FPS's, especially in the negative direction.

I didn't like the tropical setting.  I didn't like the way the character moved.  Not a fan of the weapons that I used.  It didn't run too well on my computer, either.

I liked everything about that.  I don't remember the movement one way or another, but I liked stalking through the jungle on my belly, literally right under the feet of the enemy.  The guns seemed okay to me.

What I really liked about the game were all the built in shaders.  You could play it in a cell-shaded look with the flip of a switch in the options.  Something that might be commonplace now, but the first time I played around with it was with FarCry.

My only BIG complaint would be the AI.  It was just plain cheese in places.  I remember using the sniper rifle at full zoom while laying prone in jungle canopy and underbrush to shoot at a guy in a guard tower a few hundred meters away.  Whenever I zoomed in on him to take a shot he would fire a rocket at my exact location.  WTF?  Things like that kinda got on my nerves after awhile.  Just poorly designed reactive stuff.

Not saying you all should enjoy the game or it was too hard/easy, just saying I enjoyed it.  Plenty of games out there we all have differing opinions on.  For some reason FarCry always seems to be polarizing.
