Who or what is your favorite console game lead character? (We'll get to those pesky sidekicks later)

This is a tough one. For me it would have to be Mario. Have had such a long history with good ole Mario. A close second would be Lara Craft.... for umm her wonderful in game personality.

Lara Croft is up there for me too, she made me want to play video games. But I like Tommy Vercetti - - Spent alot of time on them beaches! I also like Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.

I've always been a big fan of Sam Fisher. I think they have fleshed out his character more and more with all three Splinter Cell titles. To go more old school, I like Mega-Man. Gotta respect a bot with the brass to walk into a closed room with a pea shooter.

Mega Man was good, how could I have forgotten him. I still wish someone would do a quality mega man RPG. Thinking back, how could I forget Samus from Metroid. I also loved Strider. Most recently, the main character from psychonauts (can't remember his name lol).

"I still wish someone would do a quality mega man RPG." Have you tried MegaMan X : Command Mission? I'm really enjoying it.

On the console I’ve always liked Kain from the Legacy of Kain series, mostly in the original and early titles. He has the right mix of disdain, angst, reserved tough guy, dry humor, and a good sense for delivering payback. His character was always fun to play (except for the not so good xbox title). Anti-heroes are always fun to play for me.

Honestly, The two MegaMan Legends games are what happened when someone at Capcom said "Hey, Zelda worked well...lets do it with MegaMan now". I still haven't finished the second one, but the first one is pretty good. The control is average and the graphics blocky...but it was a mid-life PS1 game.

"Stay awhile...and listen!" Yeah, except he wasn't a lead character, nor was he ever in a console game. That's what I get for tabbed browsing.

I think its got to be Sam Fisher, although my sentimental favorite might be Tidus from FFX-in the end his is a very sad, touching story.

My favorite is probably Cloud (FFVII), but here's a few that haven't been mentioned:
- Jade (Beyond Good & Evil) - Yuri (Shadow Hearts 1&2) - King of All Cosmos (Katamari Damacy)

I'll go with Cloud too. He wasn't the most interesting, but FF VII got me back into consoles when I bought the PSX for it, and is still one of my favorite games.

Let me throw the proverbial monkey wrench into the mix: my all-time favorite lead character in a console game... drumroll... Mytocles, the Khajiit - my first ES: Morrowind character. If I have to stick to the types you've been going with, then - hands down - Link!
