IGN has an article on what we might expect from the next Fallout game. at this point it's mostly speculation, and even the target date is 'maybe 2010', but I'm hoping Obsidian does a decent job. the odds are good that they will since it does look like it's in good hands with the former Black Isle employees.

If they actually are given enough time to code in a ending.
Fixed for ya. I never understood why they got all the blame on that one. It's not like Obsidian just said screw an ending ship it!

what does obsidian have to do with fallout 3's horrible "ending"? Pretty sure that was all Bethesda.

he was referring to their work on Knights of the Old Republic 2: Sith Lords, where they got forced to release the game with large portions unfinished.

what ever happened to the KOTOR2 redux project thing? what does this part mean? New Vegas will indeed be a true role-playing game and not an action title like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. will it be like Fallout 3?..was that considered a true Role Playing game?..i put it more as a FPS with RPG elements i may of missed it but i can't see ...will this one be using the Fallout 3 engine?...and if so,are we expecting Fallout New Vegas to Fallout 3 what World at war was to modern warfare?

While it hasn't been announced as such, it's been strongly implied (and it makes sense) that Fallout:New Vegas will use the same game engine as Fallout 3. While it may not have floated your particular boat, Fallout 3 is very much an RPG by any definition of them. If there is any difference it will be that Obsidian has a reputation of coming up with better stories and NPCs, at least in some people's opinion, then Bethesda. But generally I wouldn't expect Fallout:New Vegas to fall far from the Fallout 3 tree. Fallout 3 sold a lot of copies and the whole point of doing another Fallout game this soon is to take advantage of that.

OMG Fallout 3 is so much better than Oblivion ever could be!! I slogged through about 18 hours before I finally gave up. I just couldn't force myself to go into another generic dungeon in the middle of nowhere. The time just flies by when I play Fallout 3.

yeah, Fallout 3 was the best Oblivion mod ever I loved both of them, but with both games once I got to a high level I just got bored and started playing other things. the same thing happened with Morrowind too.

Same here. I usually spend more time modding them than actually playing. That said FO3 required less modding than oblivion and therefore I actually played it much longer. I am still slugging through it, one subway tunnel at a time.

I played through FO3, thought it was a good game, but was so disgusted with the ending that I promptly traded it away. I couldn't play through it again knowing that perhaps the worst ending to any good game in history was waiting on me.
Oblivion, on the other hand...I just thought it sucked.

As mentioned, Broken Steel changes the ending and is a pretty good add-on. They all are decent, actually. Picking up the GOTY version with all four expansions, a changed ending, and the increased level cap solves a lot of the issues the original release had. Not to mention there are a ton of mods out for it now as well.

I hope there is a travel option in NV that is a steam train. Travel the wastes in your own steam train. Perhaps have mini quests that sees your train get stopped and attacked. Maybe theres an option that as the game goes along you upgrade your train with armor and weapons . Maybe even hire guards. When you are not using your train you can send your guys out to raid and bring stuff back to the vault for you.

Ooooo! Like The Amtrak Wars! That would be cool. At first your train would be all bare bones. Then as you get wealthier you can buy turrets, steam vents for close-in defense, catapult launchers to launch the airships...

Does anyone know if the engine has been updated to include environment shadows?
I just did a full replay of FO3 and all the DLCs, and while it still looks very good graphically, the lack of any shadows whatsoever really gives the world a 'flat' look.

here's a first look from IGN. they barely touch on the graphics but they say: If there was any disappointment with my first look at Fallout: New Vegas, it came with the look. Though work has been done on the engine to improve the flow of combat and conversations, little if any was done to make it more visually appealing. It will have been two years since Fallout 3 came out by the time New Vegas hits store shelves and the animations and character models are beginning to show their age.

I'm not sure what they are comparing that too, though. Fallout 3 never looked like a cutting edge FPS and while Mass Effect 2 has surpassed it in graphics (probably), replaying Fallout 3 right now does not immediately make me think "dated graphics."
