The GI issue is out.  There are details at GameFAQs and NeoGAF.

So, appearently Mickey can now become "Evul"... The reason is supposed to be, the lackluster interest in the cartoon figure, which  is 81 years old this year, and this is supposed to revive interest in him.

In this game, you can play him as either bad or good, and he will change appearance according to this - becoming more ratlike if you play him evilly...I'm still cautiously interested...

So, danish newspapers reports today that Warren Spector who now sits as Creative Director at Disney Interactive says Evil mickey is a no-go... Appearently, a test poll has revealed that people didnt like it. Too bad, I *really* liked the first drafts of this game...

That actually made the top headline spot in my tech news sifter.

The Epic Mickey they showed at E3 still looked fun, but it wasn't anything remotely close to what we were promised in the concept art.  It didn't feel Epic at all.  Overall, I'm disappointed.

Plus, Warren Spector's babble-pap giving Mickey the love-stroke came off as Corporate Mandate to me, even with the Aw, Shucks-Ain't-Mickey-Adorable semi-laughs he dropped into what he was saying.

Basically, it feels like they had this bold, daring, refreshing idea that would breathe life into Mickey again (I always think of the TV Funhouse Disney Vault line to Mickey: "You're supposed to be funny?") and coporate got scared, so it's back to bland for the mouse.

yeah, the no evil mickey plus no voice over in game (there are subtitles and the characters vocals are apparently gibberish) are knocking this down my must buy list.

There was going to be an evil Mickey? I remember reading that the villain was going to be the rabbit guy.

No voice overs is actually preferable for me.  The main Disney characters' voices drive me insane.  I absolutely agree with Spector's opinion that it's hard to see Mickey as a hero with that squeaky voice.

That's really shortsighted.  Speaking their language, imagine the potential revenue from dark mickey merchandise?  Hell, I'd buy a dark mickey tshirt, that would be cool.  Dark mickey collectables?  I think they're really not estimating the potential consumer reaction well on this one.  Sure, it may turn some people off, but they would make loads of $ on sith mickey stuff.  The illustrations and art concepts from the gameinformer cover and issue were really cool.

Besides, he wasn't evil, he just crossed over to the dark side temporarily to kick some ass.  Who hasn't done that before? icon_biggrin

Mickeys look would change based on his actions, with one path leading towards a more evil rat-looking Mickey...the designs looked so damn cool, as did the strangely eerie and apocalypric version of disneyland - would have been awesome, but.... not to be anymore

I can see why they'd not want to put in even a temporarily bad version of what basically is the biggest icon for Disney, despite the fact they could make some money off of it.  Even Disney has limits to where they will go to make money.

I'm surprised by how far Disney has let Square push things in the KH franchise but there is a part of me that thinks that Disney doesn't know what the actual content in the games is like and they are just content to sit back and collect fat paychecks.

Could be, but I don't think the Kingdom Hearts games push terribly far with their IP.  It pushes, sure, but not as far as making a bad Mickey Mouse.  In general, the characters in Kingdom Hearts games that are Disney do what you'd expect them to.

Gummi bears
bouncing here and there and everywhere
high adventure that's beyond compare
we are the Gummi Bears icon_biggrin

anyway...

the thing i am looking forward to the most in Epic Mickey..is seeing all the Disney characters of old and new,no matter how well known they were ..pretty much everyone grew up with Disney Cartoons so for me it would/could be one big nostalgia trip

imagine say The Old Mill level or seeing Ichabod Crane or Willie the Operatic Whale...i doubt it will go to such lengths, but as a fan that would be somethings i would love to try and spot in the game

Kingdom Hearts games do well..but not good enough in this department  tear

So with my family being a huge fan of Disney - was planning on placing a pre-order for Epic Mickey (which releases next week).

But as I'm scanning the web, I'm noticing that I haven't seen ANY early reviews of the game appear online anywhere. Which concerns me greatly, as that's usually a sign of a publisher who doesn't want the bad press to kill any early sales.

I have no trust for previews as they always seem to cater to kissing the publisher's butt and trust that any issues will be fixed prior to the game being releases.

So has any of the GT Staff been playing this game? Or anyone else seen any reviews on any of the other sites?

Barring that - anyone else interested in the game?

I played it a bit at PAX and had fun with it.  These days, even good games will have review embargoes, so I wouldn't read to much into it.  I am very much looking forward to it.

I impluse pre-ordered a week or so ago and will be getting release day shipping, so I'll be able to give early impressions as well. IGN gave it best platfomer honors at E3, so there has to be something in there to like.

Not really the case anymore- most games these days are embargoed until release day no matter the quality.  That happened recently with both Black Ops and AC: Brotherhood and they both still got excellent reviews.

Epic Mickey was released in Europe last week and the comments I've read are positive though not really ecstatic.

Got about an hour plus in tonight and, for the most part, I like it.

Couple of things threw me though.

The paint can't really be shot long distance and with precision. You kinda need to really be on top of what your shooting at.

The other thing is that I have no idea what the he'll I should be doing at times as far as the story goes.
Spoiler for Hiden:
After you get out of the castle you climb up the bean stock, then there's a screen to take you to 'pipes' if you want to go. I thought "sure, why not?". Then I finish he pipe level and am taken somewhere else...What happened to the beanstalk?! Will I ever get back there to keep climbing up or did I completely miss the end of that level?

Other than that, the look and feel of the graphics are spectacular!

I love it because it is Mickey Mouse, but the gameplay so far doesn't really have me too fired up.  I'll play through it for sure, but I'm not sure how much I like it.  (I'm usually a  BEST GAME EVAR kind of person, so I feel bad that I'm meh on it so far.)

Played through the beginning areas. It's a 3D platformer with collecting - right up my alley. Yeah, the camera seems a little weird, but the control tutorials have been a little uneven so far. It hasn't told me why I'm collecting these red tickets, but it's told me I can spin by shaking the Wiimote like 20 times already. I figured out there is a first person view, so I should probably look in the guide for whatever else I might be missing about the camera and controls.

I love the hand drawn cutscenes, although I wish they had voiced them outside of weird Mickey grunts.

The beanstalk was just a short, platformy section between worlds.  AFAIK there were only tickets to collect there, and not that many, so you probably didn't miss much.  Don't know if you can go back.

If you hold down the paint brush, you can hit farther away things pretty accurately, but short hits have no range at all.

Played it for several hours tonight. It's a decent enough game, but feels short of greatness.

Like someone else said - I was also really disappointed that they didn't provide voice acting in the game. I mean seriously it's almost 2011, why are we still having to read all dialogue on the screen.

At times it feels like the gameplay is a bit too simple - but it does keep surprising me at times as I accidentally find new combinations of using my paint and thinner that I didn't expect.

It's still enjoyable - but now the review scores that i've seen for it really feel about right.
