I'm a little surprised to not see anything about this one, I believe it is releasing tomorrow on Steam and a bunch of other places.  I believe it's the (indirect?) sequel to Fantasy Wars which a lot of people liked (or at least I thought they did).  I'll be trying it out for sure.

TBS - from what I've read it really is the sequel to Fantasy Wars but for some reason is not being advertised as such.

Here's the old thread on Fantasy Wars:

I think I may have been confused with Octopus Overlords, as I believed it had a pretty devoted following.

They do, however, call Fantasy Wars the prequel to this game on the downloads page.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The Developer's Diary states that it is indeed the sequel to Fantasy Wars, which I found to be an excellent TBS game for the PC. I'm not sure why they didn't keep the "Fantasy Wars" name in the title. I had absolutely no idea this game was in development. Since I'm their core audience, a relatively informed gamer, AND I loved Fantasy Wars this is very troubling from a marketing standpoint. How many people even realize this game exists?

It is also releasing at a $29.99 pricepoint, and comes with a large campaign, multiplayer (including hotseat), plus a mission and character editor. I'll be in one day one via Amazon.

Thanks for the info rittchard! You made my week!

Yay!!! I finally did something good  icon_razz

Have my fingers crossed on the game being good, it's downloading at home now.

BTW, do any of you Steam experts know if I want to put the game on another computer/laptop, do I need to download again from scratch or can you just copy some files over?

Can't answer your Steam question, but just I just wanted to point out that if the game is like Fantasy Wars, you really won't get into the meat until a few missions into the campaign. Some of the later missions were awesome and brutal. Luckily, one good point is that after every level you have the option to change the difficulty level. It looks like Elven Legacy follows this tradition.

I am not home to check, is this on Impulse as well as steam?  I prefer to purchase from Impulse when at all possible.

Ritt, I THINK you can copy the files over and as long as you put them in the correct place it will check before downloading and find it alright.

Same with me.  I had played Fantasy Wars for a bit and really liked it, and this is really really really a sequel, or maybe in feel more of an expansion.  So clearly it's good news if you loved FW, but if not, it's probably not for you.  If you never played FW but love TBS, it may still be worth a look.

For those not familiar with FW, I believe it was based on an old SSI hex-based turn-based strategy game called Fantasy General.  In traditional hex-game format, you never leave the main map (unlike say HOMM or KB), and all steps are hex based (surprise!).  In that game, battles were carried out by your unit kind of nudging onto the target hex.  So the big upgrade here is to full 3D graphics, and when you attack, you see, for instance, your archers firing onto the bad guys.  Personally I really like this style, everything plays out faster and more immediate than HOMM-like games.  Your units do level with xp and gain special skills/spells.  Fairly conventional stuff.  Graphics and effects are good/OK, nothing too stellar or significantly different from FW.

Game comes with the typical mix of single player, multi and campaign.

Funny side note, the tutorial for me had some non-English speech, then would change to English and back.

This did work BTW, thanks!  Unfortunately my netbook didn't support the resolution and crashed out on me, grrrr.

Ok, I think I royally suck at this game.  I can't get past the second mission.  I choose easy difficulty against the thieves.  The knight just absolutely demolishes me....

Ok, I think part of my issue is that I was obsessing over trying to get the gold medals.  While the rewards are generally better, it is much easier if I sit back and take my time, I am up to the 5th mission and I did manage one gold medal and completed the bonus mission it gave me.

Does anyone have any further impressions?  I might order this game tonight.

Edit: Never mind.  Time-constrained missions?  In a TBS?  Kiss my arse.  thumbsdown

there's an expansion pack on the way if anyone's still playing this.  I tried to get back into TBS's and couldn't, but I figured the fans of the game would appreciate the news.

Well, Elven Legacy was a bit short, but probably not that unreasonable for its $29.95 price tag.  I see that the expansion is slated to cost $9.99, so I think there's a good chance I'll get it.

I'll probably pick them up.  I enjoyed Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy, and the $9.99 price tag is quite reasonable.  I am kind of curious about the strategy of piling on the expansions at a one-per-month rate though.  Are they trying to get these out while gearing up for a sequel behind the scenes?  Otherwise it just seems like it makes more sense to spread these out.
