And away we go.... smile

The day we have long waited for is finally here. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is being released! Some people do already have the game, but most of us will see it today or Tuesday.

I will be picking up the game between 5-6PM for both the Xbox 360 and PC. I'll be trying it out on both a AMD X2 4400+, 2GB, X1900XT and a AMD 3200+, 1GB and 7800GT.

I'll give full impressions of the game, ASAP.

Actually there are quite a few people getting both. For me the 360 version is for relaxing in the Lazyboy and playing on my HDTV with surround sound. And I need all the achievements I can get, I figure I can actually get some in Oblivion at least.

PC version for mods, and better control options for playing a ranger or spell user type class.

The hunt is on. I will start at 12am tonight. for some strange reason my local Walmart is big on gaming, and you can often find new releases at 12am although they will only have 12-15 copies.
Going to play G.R.A.W. until then.

just got off the phone with my Walmart.
Me> are you having a 12am release for Oblivion?
clerk> Not at 12 because the trailer wont be open until 1am or so
The game might be ready to break by 2 or 3am. Just check back
in the morning, like after 7am. If it is not out by then it will be
about 4pm for the next truck to unload.

The 2 copy thing would be a helluva lot cooler if you could transfer saved games.

I thought the funniest part about Hetz's post was that his second computer is better than my main one.

That is hilarious.

Hetz, what do you do for a living?  I will PM you my address, and when you have a few extra hundreds flying around, can you just stick 'em in an envelope and send them my way?  I'll pay for postage.

Well my copy is already paid for through EB Games.  hopefully I get the call this afternoon while here at work.  One can only hope.  I still have a few more missions before I finish GRAW so if it doesn't come today, that will have to hold me over.

Anyway, while I'm here.  Is anyone concerned with how a mage will play in game on the 360?  With out having tons of hotkeys set for spells, I'm wondering how effective my Warwizard will be.

I just had to laugh at this GameFaqs poster who is planning to phone in sick as soon as he gets the game:

"Got my White Castle freezer pack(32 burgaz), two 6-packs of Vault, 2 12x12 pans of brownies, 2 1 gallon jugs of regular milk, 1 container or Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup to transform one of the gallons, and three empty 2 liter bottles full of ice water. I actually fasted much of the last 2 weeks cause I knew I was gonna gain some weight this week."

Yes, and even though Bethseda said that no one would be getting early copies, Official Xbox magazine has already had its review of the X360 version show up on Game Rankings.  I like to believe Bethseda, which shoots OXM's credibility as they're reviewing non-final code.  :p

Good luck everyone.  I'll pick this one up in about six to eight months.

Still doesn't help their credibility.  How complete a review could that have been, given the game's size?

I just read the review this morning.  It was actually a decent review and they said that they actually played the game for 44 hours over 4 days which seems like a long enough time for me.  They did report some stutters and long load times.  Hopefully those were addressed in the final code.  Still got a 9.5 though which is great.

I have to agree, as I just got OXM and read the review.  44 hours?  Probably over multiple people, but hey, it works.  Can't complain too much about the review, especially since they're up front about how much they did or didn't see.

I retract my issue with it. smile

I can confirm that multiple North Jersey stores (BB, GS, etc... )are the same. I am still gonna try a couple more today to see, but it looks like reports of the big stores getting their shipments last week were either incorrect or did not apply to most stores.....

Some impressions from other forums...since nobody here has the game yet:

Quote
x360 version:

- Graphics: One word, stunning. The detail is phenomenal. A majority of playing time was spent in the sewers/dungeon. Everything looks very high res, excellent use of lighting. When I did make it outside, the grass fade in was NOT AN ISSUE. Yes I did notice it, but I had to look for it. With the changes in elevation and such it really is not a problem. The water is fantastic. There is so much detail on armor (worn by the guards) it is astounding.
One downside is probabably that on far off mountains, the ground texture is kind of ugly. Out of everything I saw though this was the only bad thing. The good defenitly outweighs the bad.
Animation is excellent. 10k times better then Morrowind.

- Gameplay: Great havok physics. Didn't get a chance to play around with it too much, but killing a goblin (via melee) produces great and very realistic deaths.

- Combat - Very fluid. I messed with archery a little, it was difficult to hit a wolf that was running. Probably due to low level. Melee felt very natural. Enemies blocked, moved, and charged as you'd expect. Much more movement then the countdown video.

- I'm playing in HD.

- Inventory - very user friendly. Press B to bring it up. Right trigger cycles through categories (weapons, armor, magic, items) etc.

- I didn't load a saved game, but loadin in game is fast. Probably 2 - 3 seconds when opening a door, when outside, maybe half a second to load exterior. Similar to Halo. All you feel is a slight pause.

- I did steel a horse. Travels much quicker. This will be a necessity for those that don't fast travel.

- Character creation is excellent. Every option you can think of. Much more involved then even Fight Night 3, which I thought was deep. You can generate random faces. I did this for awhile and eventually when in and modified it to my liking. My final guy kind of looks like Russel Crowe!

- World seemed massive!!!!!!! No fog. Pics do not do this game justice!!!!! I didn't make it into a city yet, I was just outside of one, don't know the name, but thats where I stole the horse.

The worst thing for me is that if it came out today, I could get 2 to 4 hours in, during my kid's nap and after bed, but tomorrow I'm going on a trip through Thursday night and I won't be able to really play until the following Tuesday (maybe a little over the weekend, but I want to give it a good, long session the first time).  Grrr.

RPGs were in turmoil.  Turn-based, strategic combat was dead.  Characterization was in its death throes, regulated to linear, repetitive JRPGs.  Plotlines wavered in fleeting moments of inspiration, then abruptly crashed into predictability and routine.

The genre was no longer a place for intelligent, complex, high-brow design.  It had fallen to the plebians and the children, its frail body--still alive--being feasted upon by morons who demanded ponies, idiots who sang praises to tree-generation and erosion simulators, and graphics whores.  These were dark times.  Nevertheless, some still held a sliver of hope that maybe, some day, gameplay would reign supreme again...

The collector's edition of Oblivion is the most impressive such package I've seen since Ultima IX. As you know, it comes with a solid metal coin, a faux leather bound book (in addition to the manual), and a paper map. I would have paid another $5 for an Ultima-style cloth map. Definitely $10 well spent.

As for the strategy guide, I read the character creation section last night before bed, and I have to say that this is the best strategy guide prose I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

If this game is *at least* as fun as Morrowind, I'll be in gaming nirvana for several months.
