Eurogamer

Shame, while i thought Alone in the Dark was quite shit, the Test Drive Unlimited games i have quite enjoyed

Quote
Eden Games, developer of Alone in the Dark and Test Drive Unlimited, is no more.

The Lyon-based studio was placed into a state of liquidation by local authorities at the end of January 2013, our colleagues at Eurogamer France understand, with judicial agent RB Sabourin appointed as liquidator.

Eden's owner Atari announced in May 2012 that the developer was "in the process of being disposed of", although Eurogamer was subsequently told us that Eden had "not closed" (yet). The studio was being prepared for "divestment", Atari said, suggesting a sale of the business or closure was imminent.

The majority of Eden Games' staff were fired in the summer of 2011, prompting the rest of the studio to go on strike. Some have since banded together at new outfit Blossom Minds.

The list of games they have done, taken from their wiki page, looks like its the only last three i have played

Alone in the Dark was one of the worst games I played in this generation. Yes, I played the "improved" version that came out later. Yes, it still sucked. The game gave the impression of having been designed by idea-people who had no internal opposition in the company. It was a total mess of ideas that didn't work. These ideas all sounded cool in theory, but even the most cursory of testing would have revealed that they were unfeasible in actual gameplay.

So I'm not shedding any tears.

I liked the Test Drive Unlimited series, although they did ship with bugs and had legendary online issues. Recently I had the urge to revisit huge driving worlds, like Just Cause 2 and Fuel, and TDU and TDU2 are definitely in that group.

Honestly, just looks like a usual studio failing. Sad to see people lose jobs, but they never really worked on anything of particular quality.

Alone in the Dark was certainly intended to be a big game, but it just crashed and burned.

Atari itself seems like just a shell company. Not sure how they kept anything running, let alone Eden.

Isn't this old news though? Most of anything important happened a year ago according to the article, this is just dealing with the corpse.

In this case Atari = Infogrames, right? Anyway, never played any of their games. Sucks for the guys working there, but maybe they should have made some better games?

Infogrames actually had some good games, I'm really not sure what went wrong with that corporation and its studios.

These studio closures are turning into some kind of cosmic joke.

The more I think about it, though, it's probably for the best. New companies will rise from the ashes of these old ones, new games will get made, and the cycle will continue. It sucks now, but give it a few years. Some guy from X studio will found his own company and blow us all away.

It's the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life
