Don't want to poo poo too much on the Sony conference, but like the other two, it wasn't as great as it could've been.

After Sony's last two E3s, I thought their performance this year was much improved.  Less empty bluster, more actual product.  I think they really wanted to send a message that they're going to get themselves back on track, and on the whole, they did a reasonable job.

Eh.  I thought it was the best of the three in terms of presentation (not to be confused with actual upcoming software lineups) but it wasn't what Sony needed to turnaround their misfortune.

The biggest trend seems to be that Sony is targeting the PC audience that MS has been able to mine for 360 converts.  Second Life-like Home, NCSoft Exclusivity, UT3 timed exclusivity, and the focus on user created content in some of these all seems like they are trying to bring over people who are primarily PC gamers.  Nevermind the fact that MS has already captured a huge chunk of that market, it's niche to begin with and isn't the path to winning the generation.  Most notably they made almost zero attempt to move in on the casual space Nintendo has been exploiting.

The "redesign" of the PSP is emblematic of Sony's overall problem- nice but not enough.

Personally, though I'm very excited abut the announcement of Infamous and Killzone 2 is looking damn good.  So I'm happy enough with the software lineup for the next year but I'm not the mass market either.

I think #2 applies for 2007, but I think Sony is going to turn things around in 08.

I liked what I saw there, I haven't committed to buying a new gen console yet, but after seeing all 3 presentations, I think I am gonna buy a ps3.   Games look just as good if not better than the rest, and a blueray player on top of that. Wanted to make sure Blueray won the battle and blockbuster pretty much settles it I think. soo ps3 it will be ( still like computer games best though)

You know what, inFAMOUS may have stolen the show for me.  I'd love to see more on this title.  I really enjoyed the Sly Cooper games and I hope this game has the same overall quality.  I hope telekinesis is one of the powers!

I like Sucker Punch, but I'm very disappointed in the Infamous trailer.  Dark anti-heroes in games are becoming more tiresome than WW2 shooters.  The Sly Cooper games were unique, with a great art style and humor, while the Infamous trailer looked about as generic as they come.  They'll probably deliver a good game, but does every non-Nintendo game have to be deathly serious?

UT3 is coming to the PC in Nov as well.

That's all that matters to me.  I cannot see playing UT with a gamepad.

UT3 only makes sense on the PS3 for me.  I wont be buying a new computer for it and it seems like this game is so fast paced that it would very difficult to play on a controller.  Plus the downloadable mods sound great.

You realize you can plug a mouse/keyboard into the PS3 (and XBox 360, for that matter)?

Mouse and keyboard support for the PS3 isn't confirmed, however unlike on the 360, they aren't prevented from it.  Nothing has been confirmed as to PC to PS3 play either, but if they do go that route, which they very well could (basically guarantees constant player base), and since they announced that yes, they will being mods to the system, it all could happen.

Whew, long butchered sentence.

You cannot, however, use a mouse and keyboard to play games on the 360 in any circumstances.  Microsoft won't let that happen even though the system supports it.

Part of the reason why I want to go with Sony more is that, despite the cost, it's a more open system, and less fees.  No points to obscure actual costs of games, free online play no matter how many on the console, etc...

I've heard rumors about the PS3 (but like Turtle said it's not confirmed) but I didn't realize 360 games supported the keyboard/mouse combo.  Are they doing cross platform multiplayer?

On a side note if my new PC cannot handle UT3 I'm going to be demanding a refund.

M/KB support on the PS3 I believe is sort of one of those secret but known things. Everyone presumes it's going to be in to help draw PC or 360 gamers to the PS3 just for this game, but there has been no announcement.

Turtle is spot on about the 360 though. If MS would allow it, every game could use it. They won't, and even though devs have apparently asked for it over and over, they steadfastly refuse to help distinguish their two gaming initiatives. I understand that reasoning but it is our loss frown

No, no, no- the 360 will not allow mouse/keyboard for gaming.  As far as I know that's MS policy.  It will support mouse/keyboard outside of the gaming environment though.  From what I understand, Sony doesn't prohibit mouse/keyboard support in games (some PS2 games even supported it I believe) but it will be up to Epic themselves whether they include it as a control option for UT3 on PS3.

No I understand what you're saying.  I'm asking that if you played a racing game online, would you also require that they ban steering wheels?  I'm not trying to be obtuse here, I'm genuinely curious.

Despite the fact that I have more fun using the steering wheel.  I don't think it gives me nearly the advantage in racing games that using a keyboard would give me against someone using a gamepad in a shooter.  Unless the game was designed to compensate for that like Shadowrun.

In fact I know quite a few people who think they are much better at Forza 2 with the gamepad.

Your point about racing games is a good one. And I understand that I am in the minority in this.  But part of the appeal of playing online shooters over Xbox Live is that I know everyone is using the exact same hardware.

Yeah I guess it depends on the game.  I never had the wheel for Forza 2, but I remember being CONSIDERABLY faster in GT4 with the wheel vs without.

Personally, I feel that so long as everyone has the *access* to the same hardware, everything is fine.  If I am supar competitive and want to be awsumz in a game, I will go get the mouse and keyboard.  Otherwise I won't care and just play to have fun... which is typically my style anyway.  It's not cheating if everyone can do it.

Shadowrun did some interesting things to balance out kb/mouse users against controller users so I hear.

The main change was that when a keyboard/mouse user does a quick 180, he loses accuracy for a short time.

People see this as a penalty to keyboard/mouse users, but in all honesty, I think it's very reasonable, I've always found it very odd that spinning 180 didn't affect my aim in an FPS.  It also put players who weren't twitch aimers, but good tacticians at a disadvantage, where getting the drop on a twitch aimer meant you hit him once and he twirls around with pinpoint accuracy and kills you.

Although what all games should have on consoles are something like Halo's 6 different kinds of aim assist.

An alternative is to simply give controller users a way to do quick 180s, but I'd rather they didn't.

I gotta agree with Gellar on this one.  It's not like you need a special license to get a mouse or keyboard.  Everyone CAN play with the same hardware-if they want to.  If they choose to stick with an archaic form of control for a FPS (such as a regular controller) then that's their choice.
