Would you guys question my sexuality if I said I'm actually excited about DNF?

Well...no and yes. No if you're excited about some more over the top Duke Nuke'm gameplay. Yes if you excited about images of Duke in the nude with all weapons raised1.

Tim asked the rather pointed question "Okay, who's bright idea was to use .mov format for the DNF video? I don't have Quicktime on these POS PCs."
To which I calmly explained "Well, you see...back in the old days, Quicktime was popular.  In fact, right about the same time that Duke Nuke'em was popular.  So, in context it makes sense."

Seriously....quicktime?

ummm, Quicktime is currently an industry standard for movie trailers and video editing.  The H.264 codec has one of the best compression/quality ratios out there.

That's all well and good but the player doesn't suck any less.  smile

Quicktime Alternative then (or whatever it's called). Same with what I use instead of Windows Media Player (Media Player Classic).

I use VLC media player and it works about 20 times better than Apple's shitty Quicktime player.

I still laugh till I cry at THIS DNF ventrillo server verbal assault hehehe. Its  NSFW due to language. Some guy in Vent starts using Duke voice clips to harrass some bi%$#. Really pisses her off till near the end she's freaking out. Goes on like 40 minutes heheh.

They need to add mini game based on this and include it in the actual game. That was hilarious.

Um, wow.  That looked really, really bad.  In fact, I think the art direction took a turn for the worse from the older video trailer they showed.  Sure the poly count and texture mapping has improved, but it looks like they went and added all that extra detail, with little regard for the actual design.

For example, what the hell was that humanoid blob that was the first monster in the trailer?

You guys may be too hardcore for Apple products but Quicktime IS pretty damned popular and common. Anyone that syncs their ipod without voodoo magic has Quicktime installed.

That aside,

It looks bad. I was never a big Duke Nukem fan to begin with. It was like Doom with strippers and bad jokes.

And as far as I'm concerned, this trailer was 3DRealms' way of saying, "We're still making this game! Honest!"

Yay?

I used QT Alternative forever till one day it just stopped playing everything. Even using the real QT I still get errors that shut down my browers when trying to play a video in the browser.

OUT! I'm interested in Duke as an FPS, not as a baseball sim.

how about as a dog fighting sim?  icon_wink

build your dog, arm it with weapons, balance the heat levels.... could be fun.
Thats mechwarrior with dogs, thats not original!

I'd call it VicksWarrior.

I'm not sure how they've stayed in business.  Were their prior games so successful that they could afford to just sit back and produce something like this?

Quicktime is great you heathens!  I even like the player because you can scrub back and forth so much more cleanly than with WMV.

I don't know, I think this game is going to be big.  The trailer took down Shacknews.  The announcement thread had some 300+ replies within an hour.  And it's just a teaser.  Looks fine to me for what it shows.  Creature models look nice.  Duke sure is a throwback.  I remember installing Duke3D on my high school's computers and having deathmatches after school until we got caught (I was actually supposed to be doing IT-type work at the time).

They were already wealthy from the Apogee days, and then made an insane amount of money selling the Max Payne rights to 2K.  Made out like total bandits to the tune of something like $40 mil.  Also, they had a big hand in Prey and had revenue from the Max Payne games themselves.

Ah, okay.  Well you know what, I've got no right to criticize them then (at least not right now).  They made their money making a lot of good games previously and if they want to spend it this way that's their choice.

However, I do think the "teaser" is pretty bad.  But, if they at least make it a fun, satirical, action shooter all is well.  But damn, that first monster in the teaser still looks ugly, and not in the well designed ugly kind of way, it looks like the kind of stuff 1st year 3d animation students cobble together.

And they really, really need to rewrite their shaders to get beyond the Doom 3 style plastic skin.  It's painful to see nowadays when even the low tech Half-Life 2 does it better.

Although, that could just be me not wanting to see 3d modeled strippers that look like plasticized corpses.

Seriously....quicktime?

I remember working at an Apple store in early 1992 and we were amazed that Apple had released this cool new program called Quicktime that let you watch movies on your Mac!  OMG!  We sure showed those stinking IBM Clones who the boss was!

I'm sure a 16 year-old program is great and all but there are better options now.

And there's nothing in that lame-ass trailer that makes me think "Well good thing they took their time!"

Pixelated boobies is still pixelated boobies.

Either than that, that trailer was pretty full of meh. I have the fear that the game will be too dumbed down since they would be afraid of an AO rating. Pretty sure any boobies in the game will get that too.
