I'm an idiot. I never noticed the box to click on that selects the entire party. Funny how it never made much difference until the caves. they still followed me until then. Enjoying this part of the game.

I think there's a hotkey for that too.

Can someone who's beaten the game give me some advice?  I'm pretty late in the game, on Drakensang Mountain:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I've secured the dwarven cave/temple thing as a base and have to advance.  I need to take out two gates.  There are a ton of enemies and the only tactic that seems to be decent is to run to the first gate and destroy it, but I'm lucky if two of my companions are alive at that point as they get caught up in fighting.  Even if I do destroy it, I can never get close to the second gate before being wiped out and there's no chance to recover as the enemies keep on coming.

I did try retreating back to the base after taking out the first gate and using the apparently indestructible folks there to finish off the enemies seemed to work, but that also seemed to throw the game into fits of constant auto-pausing.  Then I saved and that save won't load now.

So is there a trick here?  I do have a melee heavy party, but it's gotten me this far without much hassle.  But I've spent two days trying to get past this point and I know the end is near so I'd like to finish the game.

Edit: I've realized there is no trick and made it to the top, where I'm now struggling with that final mess.  What a horrible way to end an otherwise fun game.  Throwing mass enemies at you is not good game design.

I think there's a hotkey for that too.

I wish there was, I couldn't find one to set for it.  Kind of annoying double-clicking on a character portrait all the time to select the group (or clicking on the thing in the lower right corner, which is even more out of the way).

Just finished the game.  A pretty good game on the whole only weakened by the poor ending design.  Definately worth it for RPG fans.

I thought the period key was the hot key for select all?

If they are in your inventory then right click and choose the gear icon.  If they are on your hot bar then just click on them.  But keep in mind that if you are paused in combat it will que up the potion as an action that will take place next once you unpause.

Nope.  No resting or sleeping.  The health and mana bars regenerate on their own, at a slow pace, and there are things you can get later that will improve them.  Keep in mind that bandages are dirt cheap and a single character with a decent healing skill can keep a group going for the most part (plus tea for eliminating poison).

BUMP!

So what was the final say on this game? Did (m)any more of you finish it? I just saw this on a shelf at BB and had never even heard of it. I read through this whole thread and I am curious about it. You all seemed to be enjoying the early stages, but I only noticed one or two of you finishing it. Do you still recommend it for $30?

I highly recommend the game.  It is a fairly long game and I got sidetracked and then ended up having to format my system and wasn't able to save anything from the HDD so lost my saves.  I will certainly be going back to this.

id thumbs up from me, but then I love rpgs. I finished it and enjoyed it all the way through. They did do the common mistake of making the end a slog through one difficult foe after another but it wasn't as over the top difficult as some.

As one of the people who did finish it, I can say that I still can give it a positive review even several months out.  It's not the best RPG ever, but it's a good example of the genre that does a lot of things right, if nothing spectacularly.  Definately worth what it is going for now.
