Square Enix has updated their DQ8 site with a form to sign up for a free demo of the game here.

I think there are also Gamestops and maybe some EBs that have these as well.

The demo is a lot of fun.  I can't wait for the full game.

They had a stack of them at Media Play.  Grabbed one last time I was in there.  They were just sitting in the little counter area in the gaming section where they keep the iPods and consoles locked up in cases.

Maybe I'll try to score a slime keychain!

Bump to say that I got my demo yesterday in the mail. Thanks for the link.

As for the demo itself, the parts inside the town seemed pretty cool. I liked the graphics/animation and how you can interact with almost any drawer/chest/bookshelf. And even the odd French accent on a couple of the speaking characters wasn't too bad. For some reason, I got a heavy dose of RPG nostalgia (even with the new graphics); not sure exactly why, but it was good.

Once outside the town, however, I wasn't as impressed. The random battles I can deal with, I suppose. I found the combat to be fairly boring, however. Perhaps it's because the characters are low level and without many powers, but it seemed like combat was just attack-attack-attack-heal-attack-attack-win battle. Sort of blah. Did like to see the slimes again, though.  biggrin

Try the other part of the demo.  It lets you play battles as level 15 characters with several skills.  The tension system also adds some complexity to battles,  as its useful against some enemies, but it's a gamble using it.

Picked up the DQVIII demo yesterday and was completely unimpressed.  Everything about it had the feel of the bland, boring, uninspired gameplay which (just IMO, of course) has been the hallmark of Enix developed games.  DQVIII just seems like more of the same thing we’ve been playing for years, only prettier.

Then again, I’m going through my ‘jaded gamer’ phase right now, so maybe it’s just me.

So I spent an hour or two with the demo and while I was impressed with the graphics/presentation, the overall gameplay felt pretty bland.

That said, for some reason it prompted me to (finally) open up the copy of Dark Cloud 2 I had bought so long ago and give it a try - holy crap, what a great game this is turning out to be!   Thank you DQ8 for pointing me in its direction smile

Same here Gratch.  I'm starting to think we both have the same tastes in games (with your love of Shadow Hearts Covenant and other such things   biggrin ).

Just want to chime in here to provide a differing opinion. I loved the DQVIII demo. It has utterly fantastic graphics and story and the combat system nicely updates the tradtional DQ battle system without completely revamping it. If the demo is representative of the full game, DQVIII will supplant Paper Mario 2 as my favorite RPG of this generation.

For those complaining about the battle system, I'd urge you to give the full game a try. The DQ series has always had a surprisingly deep character development system. It may look simple at first, but Dragon Quest games can be brutally difficult, especially when it comes to  boss fights.

I can't wait for this to come out. I hope this game really raises the series' profile in the US.
