At this point, I'm debating when I want to say "Done" I've beaten bowser, and grabbed 107 stars... just leaving me with 13 purple stars to go. I'll give a few more purples a go I guess and see how I feel, but I'm not sure I want to slog through all 13 more of them, and then do the whole thing over again as Luigi.

Had to pop in and update my impressions here after 6 mo with the game.  Still loving it.  I beat the game several months ago and put it down for a bit both due to Brawl/Kart/etc and to take a break and let the 'freshness' come back.  It worked.  I'm now up to 99 stars and am still having a blast.

I've never been a platformer pro, and I definitely am teh suck on some of these harder levels.  I suck at swimming, and the cosmic mario race through the water is kicking my ass.  I'm also not sure I'll ever get Purple Coins on the Battlerock, or the purple coin ice one with the series of jumps you need to nail perfectly or lose the ice suit.  But I'm going to get as far as I can... smile

If you are willing to give it some time, there is a very fun part to getting all the purple coins on the ice level. However, if you are not fully committed to getting 120, steer clear of Luigi's Purple Coins.  It will make you hate life.

I managed to hit 118 this weekend.  Just Luigi's Purple Coins and the Melty Molten Daredevil run to go.  Luigi's looks hard, but the many youtube videos of people getting all 150 coins without flinching make me think I'll get it with a little practice.  The Lava Spire Daredevil, on the other hand, sucks ass.  I get to the rising-lava portion without any trouble, then get nervous and wind up dying every time.  Then you've got to wait 4-5 min while you run all the way back there after each death.  Grr!

I don't really have any incentive to get more stars.  I have 63.  Is there anything that I unlock if I get beyond that number besides bigger testicles?

1) Fun playing the levels.  There are a few crazy-hard levels, but most of them are very fun, IMO.  Some of the most creative ones come after the initial 60.

2)
Spoiler for Hiden:
Luigi at 120, and a bonus level at 240.

3) Bigger testicles.

Well, you miss the whole rest of the story! Even though you have already rescued Princess Peach and beaten Bowser, he somehow manages to capture her again and you are forced to beat him again. Yet it seems an awful lot like deja vu.  It's all very deep and nuanced.

Yeah, the fact that Toad's letter from Peach doesn't change one bit after you rescue Peach (namely, that she's still captured and sending 1-ups from her cell) struck me as odd.  Nintendo doesn't generally let such obvious and easily-addressed oddities through QA.

I like how Zero Punctuation puts it:  No one really seems to hold it against Bowser anymore that he kidnaps Peach; It's just what he does.

There's some talk about a Galaxy sequel.

I would guess they would suggest that at the point you beat Bowser for the first time, you are zapped back into some kind of alternate timeline where you have yet to beat Bowser and there's even more stuff to do.  But it would have made much more sense to just let you play the extra levels and trigger a minor cutscene and credits when you got to 120.  Having to go back and beat Bowser was kind of dumb.

arise!

got this from Gamefly and I have to say...  I'm just not digging it.  I never really played Mario 64 so maybe it's just that I prefer the 2D Mario games (loved Super Paper Mario on the Wii) or maybe it's the fact that my first copy from Gamefly got lost in the mail and they took forever to send me another one but after playing for a bit the urge to continue is just not there.

I decided to finally get some more time into this one before jumping into Galaxy 2.

I just beat Bowser with around 88 stars.  I'm debating whether or not to go for a bunch more.  I can deal with all the comets except for the race against the other Mario ones.  They just require so much repetition before you get that perfect run that it drives me batty, so I've pretty much decided to just skip all those.  Since I've basically set myself up to not get all 120, I don't know if it's even worth doing the other comet stages, since I've basically already done them.

There are definitely a list of annoyances I have with the game.  The stupid buzzing when you're low on health, the reversing control scheme when you're upside down, the ways that the game insists on keeping you alive in instance when you're already dead (like you get hit by a Bullet Bill, and run around on a moving platform that's about to sink into the lava when you can't actually make it off), and a few other things.  Eventually I realized that it's way better to play it in short bursts of an hour or so at a time.  Otherwise I get really, really frustrated.

CK, when I started playing I didn't like it at first.  It took a bit for everything to click, but when it did it was glorious.  How many stars in are you?

Also, the cosmic races don't get any better.  If you don't like them, you don't like them.  Nothing wrong with that.  Plus, when you get 120 stars, it opens up Luigi and you have to get ANOTHER 120 stars and the cosmic races are even HARDER.  I have no idea why I even did it.

Up to 101 now.  I'm going to take a break and dig into MG2, but I'll probably come back to finish off the last 19 to at least get Luigi.  There's no way in hell I'm going for the full 241 though.  F that noise.  biggrin

Yeah, especially because Luigi's really hard to control.  It's like playing on ice.  I have no idea how I made it.

Okay, I got all 120 stars in Super Mario Galaxy.  It was interesting how thoroughly the levels designed around precision jumps and suffocating time constraints dovetailed with the slippery character control and oblique camera angles.  It's like the designers looked at the hexagonal design around the nunchuk's analog stick and purposefully locked the perspective to ensure critical jumps would never, ever notch into those corners.  Combined with the decision to have Mario control like his shoes are covered in used cooking grease, scampering helplessly in place for a second anytime you try to get him moving, and it's clear that your *real* enemies in the game are the developers.

(Not the music composer, though.  That guy's *awesome!*)

What's weird is that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is different.  Subtly.  I popped it after the first time I ragequit "Lugi's Purple Coins" and then again after I finished the original, and the sequel definitely controls better.  It's so hard to put my finger on, though.  It's like they made the most infinitesimal changes to the height of the camera, the momentum of the jumps, and the time it takes for Mario to get his fat ass in motion that it makes the game seem...fun!

Anyway, I got every star in SMG and beat 100% of the developers' obstacles, and as long as I never read any other post on this topic or speak of it again, no one can ever take that accomplishment away.  Cheers!
