So, if you rarely play, and buy the game in say about a month, will this be like every other damn shooter out there, where you will get insta-killed by the 12 year olds who have nothing better to do than play this game? (BF2 I'm looking at you!)

Yep.

You can also set the filter to look for games only at your ranked level.  That should help a bit.

Yeah, I have done that, but I don't think it keeps out people who are higher ranked than you. That worked for me the first 2 days, but yesterday I started getting into matches with all classes. It also wasn't the murderfest I was expecting, because you get higher classes on both teams. There was one guy who had 70 kills in a round of Warzone. I didn't know how he did it, although I am guessing maybe he was an engineer.

I had no idea controls were changed with the patch, I didn't notice any difference while playing last night.  If there is a change, it is probably subtle.  I mean if it suddenly became CoD4 tightness, I would have noticed immediately.

I hadn't played enough to notice any major difference pre/post patch. The one thing that annoys me a little bit is the delay from the time you press the zoom button until the sights are brought up, and that has not changed.

Regarding when you start the game - especially if you can get with an experienced squad, I don't think it will be a big deal. Yes, you will be less skilled with the controls, but that would be true of any mp game you were a latecomer to, regardless of genre. Even as a rifleman (first available class) you can have a role and get points. It should only take  3-4 hours to rank up to medic (less, if you have decent fps skills, which I do not) and then you can start getting points for healing which will help you rank up even faster.

And by the way, the really need to slap the "Beta" tag on the Killzone.com site ala the CoD site. It has a lot of great information, but it's slow if it even loads at all, and the stats are rarely up-to-date. The date pulldowns on the sign-in page also don't work correctly in Firefox.

Killzone.com isn't loading very well due to the amount of traffic it's receiving.  That shouldn't be a reason to slap a "beta" tag on it.

And my stats are always up to date about an hour after I play my last game.

How about SP stats?

It pulls all of my MP stats fine.  Even my Killzone: Liberation stats.  And I haven't played any single player for KZ 2 yet  icon_smile

When I am able to get in and the page loads correctly it does have my MP stats correctly. SP stats are way behind. Actually, if you are in-game and go to the SP stats screen, there is actually a button assigned to "upload stats to Killzone.com". I don't know if that means they don't ever load up those stats automatically, although I think they must at times.

Finished up SP last night. Last boss fight was probably the only thing I didn't like about that game - it just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the gameplay IMHO. There may have been a couple of places with CoD-style spawn points, but they were not nearly as offensive. I started playing again on Veteran to pick up some trophies. Turns out there is no trophy for finishing the game on Veteran, which is kind of surprising - I don't know if I really want to try playing on Elite. Having trouble getting the "kill 5 Helghast with 1 grenade" trophy. I found a place that seems good for it, but haven't been able to manage it. I have another place in mind, though. Probably needs to be done on easy difficulty or at least regular, because it seems you really have to get the grenade right next to the guy to kill in Veteran. Guys will go flying, but they will recover and get up.

One thing I have noticed that will happen on some of the MP maps that is very cool are massive firefights. There are long open streets on some of the maps and sometimes you'll get these intense, extended 16 on 16 battles across the length of the street.

Yeah, those can be pretty nuts, but also very frustrating. That's a good time to take your squad on a side path to flank the enemy.

The other thing I absolutely love are the sounds the rifles make. Even though they are fictional guns, there is something very realistic about the sound they make. It reminds me of the way rifles sound when you see footage of fighting in the middle east on the news.

I was just surprised at how much of a difference there was between the rifles and the SMG.  The SMG feels really, really nice, weightier than any other SMG in any other game and the thing spits out bullets.

Finished up the single-player campaign the other day - you know, while frustrating, the end area/boss didn't end up ruining the experience.

Yeah, the thought of playing it on a tougher difficulty makes me cringe, but I'm not going to toss out the fun I had throughout the entire rest of the campaign.

And I only missed out on the secret trophy by 20 seconds!!!  Damn!

I decided to play some on elite last night. I got partway through the battle at the end of the 3rd chapter. It has checkpoints, but still very hard. Elite doesn't feel like CoD on veteran, which I loathe, but it has its frustrating parts. I will probably see how far I can go, although there are a couple of parts that I am pretty concerned that I won't be able to manage, one of which is the last boss fight - they give you very little health.

I got the last secret trophy, but I don't really know how. It's not clear where they start the timer from. I'm about 50 kills short of the 1000 kills trophy. I still haven't managed 5 kills with one grenade. There are a few that I doubt I will try for:

Spoiler for Hiden:
destroy all the pods when in the air-to-air gun, for example.

And of course, I seriously doubt I'll get the awards for being in the top % in MP for a week.

OK, I have been continuing on with my elite playthrough. I've gotten about halfway through so far. It is definitely less frustrating than CoD veteran (or I would have given up by now), but there are still some parts that have made me want to throw the controller. While CoD veteran requires you to take just the right route so you can stop the forever spawning enemies, Killzone 2 elite requires you to find the best spot of cover that will allow you to stay significantly protected while you methodically pick off enemies and let your teammates help to ease some of the burden (although you'll find times, such as Visari Square, where your buddies will all be laying on the ground screaming for a medic.) In normal, you can run around a little, but in elite, if you get out of cover, you are pretty much dead.

The toughest part so far has been

Spoiler for Hiden:
After crossing the first part of the bridge, approaching the AA gun. I had no problem at all with this part on normal, but it was a major pain on elite. I still am not even sure how I beat it. If I tried moving up the middle, the enemies seemed to spawn endlessly, even when I was able to "snipe" the AA gunner with my rifle. I spent a very long time (I didn't time it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it added up to an hour over 2 days and a few sessions) trying to get through and tried different variations, such as taking a path up the left side or clearing out the middle with the rifle, then running back and getting the grenade launcher and trying to clear out the area where enemies were spawning from. What finally worked was taking cover way back near the gun rack and taking the AA gunner out at long distance, and then slowly moving up the middle. After fighting a little while, all the enemies were cleared out. The only thing I can think of is that normally the AA gun takes out a lot of your AI teammates, and by taking it out early, it allows the AI teammates to clean up.

I am still deathly afraid of the last boss battle (and the fight leading up to it) and will probably wind up not getting the trophy. I should at least get the 1500 kills smile

One other thing I forgot to mention before - in Killzone 1, Templar's first name was pronounced "Yahn" (spelled Jan), but in Killzone 2 they call him "Jan".

Just finished the game today, and while it's heavy on rails, I had fun.  Graphically, I think it was the best looking of all console FPS games so far.  I liked the weapons, mainly because they actually made them feel heavy.  I must say the end credits were pretty cool, well done.

According to the in-game statistics, I am 47% through the game right now.  This is easily the best looking FPS game I've ever played.  The atmosphere and environment details are through the gd roof.

Is this supposed to be considered better looking than Modern Warfare (the first one)? It seems like the texures in Killzone 2 are very low res in comparison.

I'm around 3 hours into the game, it's quite dull and unimpressive for the most part. I do love many of the visual and aural aspects of it, they did a good job in the technical department even though there are hints of slowdown. However, the game is not very atmospheric and the level design is uninspired. The gunplay has its moments, and I love the sparse use of motion controls, but the dialogue, story, and characters aren't pulling me in whatsover and I really can't envision myself finishing.

Unless things picks up substantially, I'm baffled by the 91 rating Killzone 2 holds on Metacritic really.

And seriously, we're how many years after Half-Life 2 and people still can't get lip-synch down?
