I have the recommended spec - a 360!  smile

I am not in love with the new theme of they seem to be taking.  The web site with the spattered blood, the head sliding down a spear as the transition graphic, etc.  However it is Bioware and they have been a company worth trusting.  I will wait until a few reviews come up but I bet I end up buying it.

I JUST have the recommended specs (short of the NVidia video card - I have a 8800 GTX), so it looks like my gaming rig is in need of an upgrade sometime soon.
I've seen benchmarks where the 8800 GTX was just a step above some versions of the 8800GTS and just a step below others, maybe they are talking about the lesser versions of the GTS  icon_wink

Well, I meant as in the GTX is better than the GTS card. I mean, come on - it has an X in it - everybody knows that X is eXtreme! biggrin

Meanwhile, your example of Sims 3 is for an entirely different sector of the games market, the kind of people who play the sims aren't the ones who would look into anything remotely like Dragon Age.

False.

I am not impressed with these videos.  1. where is the HUD?  2. How do I choose abilities/spells to use? 3. Is it pausable at all?  It looked more like some action game like Dynasty Warriors or a smashem up like The Warriors.

A hands on review that sounds pretty cool. I really like the part where a character that could have joined your party and you wind up picking a fight and killing them instead. In this case you got shown a small cut scene showing you what you missed out on and how they could have helped you.

I question the decision to immediately show the consequences of a decision though.  Kill a joinable NPC and then show how awesome they were... then people just reload.  It would probably be better like the Witcher where you don't discover the consequences until the end of a chapter or near the end of the game.

I agree.  I'd rather not know and have it left to be discovered on another playthrough.

I don't know. Choice is always better. Suppose by chance you lose the chance to play a character that you really wanted. It would nice to be able to be able to change your mind. I can't see them doing this for every character, just some really special/unique ones. My point was that hands on sounded more encouraging for the game than a lot of other stuff that has come out recently.

But it also sounds like some of your choices might be forced based on who your party is beforehand (see the Sorcerer verses big dumb brute thing in the article) and not what choice you make then and there. Thus, reloading and picking another option just might not work.

I think you're right, by this article:

Quote
Decisions of all sizes occur throughout the game and the choices you make really do shape the story you play. This was no more apparent than in the next scene, in which both parties met with a powerful sorceress named Wynne, who is leading the resistance against the demons who've taken over the castle. Playing as the first team, Wynne's initial cold reception is quickly calmed with a few choice words. However, Morgan, as a wild witch, has nothing but disrespect for the Circle Mages and an unexpected outburst causes the situation to flare up and a fight between your team and the Circle mages ensues.

Sort of sournds like its out of your control and a simple reload won't fix it.

It doesn't matter to me whether or not I have control over the decision but them showing what might have been feels like a spoiler that would take way reasons to replay the game.  I'd rather not know that info so if I do replay it it will feel fresh by choosing other paths.

I gotta side with CeeKay here. There's a number of reasons I don't want to be forced to see those kinds of cutscenes while playing through the game, not the least of which is that it's just too "gamey" and a jarring break in the narrative.

As long as they make it something you can disable via the options menu though, I'd be fine with it. I just don't want to have to play it that way.

While having unique and active party NPCs is important, I expect (and hope) that the majority of the game's narrative is influenced by the player's dialogue and actions not the NPC's.  In which case, having instant revelations would be reversible by quickload in those situations.  To be fair, though, I suppose the majority of Dragon Age's core story and gameplay elements were in place before The Witcher came out.  I would hope in the future that more RPG's take a cue from Witcher's cause and effect system and its lack of black and white morality.

There's some info on a modder's event hosted by Bioware to show off the toolset:

Dragon Age Toolset: Builder Event II, p1 (Part 1 of 4, there isn't much info in Part 1)

Some had worked with each other for years and yet this was this first time they had a chance to meet in the person. Some were from Edmonton, some came from further away like Toronto and California. Some traveled even further to be here from Germany, Scotland and even Denmark. All of them are very talented and very dedicated builders or modders who all had created some of the best content for fans of Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 to enjoy.

We wanted them to get some hands-on time with the Dragon Age Toolset and learn the tricks directly from BioWare developers.
So, if Dragon Age isn't the new NWN so many people wanted, I guess they're hoping folks will just build that themselves.  icon_smile

Yeah it pisses me off as well. I bought the CE for Oblivion but never looked at the bonus disk. I just couldn't wait to start playing and then when I finished the game I was no longer interested.  However, I really want the quest, cloth map-god I love cloth maps, and the extra healing ring. I think I'm going to have to do this. I do commend them for coming up with decent CE content. I hate the fact that some of it is in game stuff.

On the official boards the devs have pointed out that the GameStop link doesn't actually say that the NPC and extra quest stuff is exclusive to the CE.  The implication of their comments seems to be that those two things are going to be general pre-order bonus material.

Plus it's likely that they will be available easily after launch anyway.

Eh, I wasn't especially impressed or disappointed.  Seems about on par with everything else.  I do have to give them props for finally breaking the "all dwarves must have Scottish accents" mandate of general fantasy.

it puts it out only a week in advance of the monster that will be Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2 though.  might not be too good for sales, especially since they seem to be trying to capture some of that crowd.

I think it's a smart move actually.  October was way, way too crowded because everyone except Assassins Creed 2 was avoiding November because of CoD.  Plenty of room in November for Dragon Age.

And the 'full preorder bonuses' (also known as one time reward items for buying the game new) have been released:

Quote
As an added bonus, Dragon Age: Origins (both original and Collector’s Edition) includes two special pieces of downloadable content: The Stone Prisoner, as well as a suit of Dragon Age themed armor that can be used in Dragon Age: Origins as well as in the upcoming BioWare Shooter RPG, Mass Effect™ 2 on all available platforms.

With The Stone Prisoner download pack, players will have access to Shale, the mighty stone golem who can become one of the most powerful party members in the game, and comes with its own personal back-story and unique quests for the player to discover. The Stone Prisoner will also include new environments, items and hours of additional gameplay, further deepening the epic Dragon Age experience. The Stone Prisoner is available to original purchasers of new copies of Dragon Age: Origins at no additional cost. The Stone Prisoner can also be purchased separately for $15.

In addition, players who purchase a new copy of Dragon Age: Origins (original or Collector’s Edition) will receive a code to download the Blood Dragon Armor, an exclusive set of themed armor that will give the player additional protection in combat. This armor will be available for use in both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2.

All gamers who pre-order Dragon Age: Origins will receive the Memory Band, an in-game item that can be equipped to add +1% to all gained Experience Points and which adds one bonus point that players can use to boost their character’s skill set. In addition to the Memory Band, several leading retailers are also offering a bonus Dragon Age: Origins item for a limited time. Players should check with their favorite retailer for additional pre-order item offerings.

As for the CE bonuses:

Quote
The Collector’s Edition is a premium package available in limited quantities featuring exclusive Dragon Age: Origins collectibles including a unique steel case, a cloth map of the world of Dragon Age, a Making-of documentary DVD, a digital version of the Dragon Age: Origins soundtrack, game trailers, wallpapers, strategy tips and a concept art video, plus three exclusive downloadable items that will provide special advantages to the player.

(downloadable items are the same as listed above)

So, in short - don't buy the game used. You're apparently buying a 'gimped' version by doing so.
