I just saw on the main site that the first official trailer (with Lady GaGa doing the soundtrack) will be coming out August 17th.

Since this is coming out almost exactly a year after the 360 version, I'm guessing that EA and MS made a deal for some level of exclusivity before EA took over the franchise.

I continue to struggle with the fact I cannot make my own character. Is this wrong of me?

I mean the first title spent so much time focused on tailoring the perspective and character attributes, to suddenly shift it to a "Mass Effect with swords" still strikes me as dramatic, and even punitive in some ways.

Even though it's not an issue for me, I definitely understand your concerns Leviathan.

But, I think it's just the realities of making games these days. Remember how long Dragon Age took to make? Imagine doing that all over, but even bigger for DA2. Can you imagine the cost?

True but consider the last title was published what, less than two years ago? It's not like things have changed so dramatically in that time -- and/or the creators are standing in food lines from the last effort.

The problem is that the need for investor returns degrades the quality of a product, almost without fail. You're continually pressured, under our economic model (a mutated, occasionally Democratic capitalism), to create a higher grossing product at reduced cost, which almost always results in crap(pier) product.

I don't know. I feel like there's a point where this catering to the lowest common denominator bites you in the ass, and I also feel like Bioware is intent on finding this out.

Bioware is inevitably becoming more and more a corporate entity, as you would expect given the EA takeover.  Dragon Age: Origins was a throwback type of title, but given that something like 70% of the sales were on consoles, it should be no surprise that they are ditching aspects of the title that were designed to appeal to PC gamers.

A good example is the official forum hubub over the fact that the last DA:O DLC was released today.  Before Dragon Age was launched, Bioware talked endlessly about how they had plans for two years of DLC stuff.  Yet a little less then a year later, this is it.  Now an honest answer by them would have been that they are putting out DA2 sooner then they expected, or that the DLC for DA:O hasn't sold as well as they expected, or whatever the reasons are.  Instead they are saying, apparently with a straight face, that DA2 is so awesome and is coming together so quickly that they just can't wait to show it to us.

Bioware isn't the same company it was two years ago.  If Mass Effect style RPG/action game hybrids are what is going to sell, that is what Bioware is now going to make.

I have no idea how good or bad DA2 will be, but I for one am glad they are working on a sequel I will play than a bunch of DLC that I will never play.

Sarkus, Bioware has always been a corporate entity, period. Hasn't been for way more than two years.

The reason why there aren't 2 years of DLC for dragon age is simply because not enough people would buy 2 years of DLC. Corporate or not, when something isn't selling, you don't make more of it.

The reviews on each are not positive.  Witch Hunt, in particular, was getting savaged on the Bioware message boards last night.

all the more odd then that the last (latest?) dlc for mass effect 2 has been highly reviewed.  you would think some of that talent would rub off a bit.

I really enjoyed DA (3 playthroughs), but I haven't touched any of the DLC.  None of it seems well done.  They really whiffed on the DA DLC effort.  I'm glad to hear the Shadowbroker DLC for Mass Effect has been receiving good reviews.

Whether it's because the DA DLC hasn't sold well (Turtle's reasoning) or something else, I'm convinced that what DLC was done for DA:O was not what was planned prior to release.  I strongly suspect that much of Awakening was intended to be individual DLCs, and that the other DLCs were meant to be something more significant in terms of new locations and environments rather then this reuse of locations stuff that they have generally relied on. Leliana's Song, in particular, totally deviates from earlier "canon" simply because it was cheaper for them to reuse existing locations.  The whole process smells like "cheap to produce" became the mantra of their DLC development.

It really stands out to me when you compare what Bethesda did DLC-wise for Fallout 3 to what Bioware has done for Dragon Age.  In approximately the same period after release, Bethesda launched five major DLC expansions, only one of which reused any significant amount of vanilla game content (and even that DLC included a lot of new locations).  And they did it for $10 each and with significantly more content then any of Bioware's add ons, not including Awakening.

It's more than just sales. It's also the planning. DAO was designed and made before DLC was really a big thing. Similar to how Mass Effect 1 was.

It was a combination of factors such as the engine not being quite setup well for DLC (resulting in those weird issues seen in Awakening), to the designers not being experienced with DLC, to the story/plot not being written to be open to DLC. This is all on top of there not being a sales incentive for them to try put in the effort to overcome all these inherent issues. So, instead, they put more effort into DA2.

Meanwhile, let's take a look at Bioware's big DLC successes, Mass Effect 2, which I think has some extremely good DLC, many of them worthwhile. Well, the story missions anyway. This is because the game was designed so that it could support it from the ground up, including leaving a plot open enough to have it, designing the engine to support dropping in DLC with as few conflicts as possible, pre-recording DLC voice acting so they don't have to call back in the voice actors, and even stuff like keeping staff on hand to handle that.

DAO DLC was pretty forced, I'll agree, but there's more factors. I'm not giving them a break, nor did I really buy anything beyond Awakening.

Okay, now compared to the screens released a while back, this game with the full lighting engine looks a whole lot better.

The backgrounds, as the devs admitted, are much less detailed, but the characters have a lot more detail to them it seems. I guess the devs were right, no one cares about all the cheese wheels scattered around Ferelden.

The characters aren't quite up to Witcher 2 level, but it's pretty close.
