Heck, it took me so long that I just finished Dragon Age Origins (and I bought the collectors edition the first week).
There was no way I was buying a hurried sequel that seemed cobbled together just so it could make the next christmas -way to try to bury a promising franchise EA.

So DA2 was a disappointment, but I did still enjoy it. It wasn't the worst thing, nor was it bad to me. Just in comparison to what they had done, it wasn't up to snuff. That being said, I hadn't played a CRPG on the PC in YEARS so on the Xbox I think the competition is lacking so my standards may be lower. I am playing Witcher on PC now and it is great. I do hope that DA3 is awesome and believe that Bioware will turn back to DA1 for the model to follow. It would only make sense.
Yep lack of Rpg's is your problem DA2 may not have been terrible in and of itself but when compared to other offerings out there and especially compared to DA:O it is a waste of time....imo.

I've mentioned my thoughts on DA2 quite a bit, but figure I'll defend it as most are trashing it too harshly here, I believe.
It was a bit of a disappointment, but a good game overall. I loved the rogue combat. I really applaud their attempt at innovation in the story, though it wasn't handled as well as it should have been. They didn't go the typical rpg epic story route where you go up against the darkest evil to ever face the world. They just did 10 years in the life of a guy who turned out to be rather extraordinary and was at the center of things when an uprising began. The pro here is that it was different, which is something so sorely needed in video games. The con was that the lack of epic-ness kinda put a damper on things.
The character interaction was excellent, though they went the safe and lazy route by making every character bisexual.
The lack of sets was inexcusable.

What I would love to see is the story presentation done like DA2, but with all the stuff in DA:O that made it better than DA2.

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. I enjoyed playing the game and understood (I think) what they were trying to do. The game just didn't measure up to what DA:O had accomplished though, in large part because of the re-use of the same sets over and over again.

If you want the epic, evil and dark fantasy element, you need to read the latest novel; Dragon Age Asunder. To some extent its a continuation of the DA2 story thread, and all that was lacking in the game is there and then some.

I'm definitely in. I really enjoyed DA2, though mostly for the way they told the story. I did enjoy the combat of the first one better. The recycled environments didn't bother me in the least. I think they'll do fine with this one.

from the post: I am pleased to confirm that we are, in fact, working on the next Dragon Age game. Not a big surprise to most of you, I know. We have been working on it in some way for about two years now with the bulk of our efforts ramping up about 18 months ago. I'm wondering if it will be a Q1 2013 release date like their last 3 Bioware franchise releases. ME2 - Jan 2010 DA2 - March 2011 ME3 - March 2012

After the shitfest that was the ending to ME3, as well with SW:TOR overall, I have absolutely no confidence in Bioware anymore. Skipped unless I hear VERY good things AFTER release.

You'll hear good things for the first 2-3 days, and then the more realistic opinions will start to shine through. I'd say, based on experience, that this community can get a bit too enthusiastic immediately after a major release.

Will buy after other fan impressions to see if they actually have varied environments, decisions that actually matter, and if they actually stick the landing unlike ME3.
There were a lot of things I liked about DA2, but just as much that I didn't.

I guess EA got a bit too meddlesome in how Bioware should design their RPGs: Greg Zeschuk, Ray Muzyka Are Leaving BioWareProbably doesn't bode well for the state of Dragon Age 3, eh?

You have to remember that those two originally sold their company to EA. Or rather, they sold to the holding corp, which in turn was bought by EA, and you can bet they had some small say in that.
So if they didn't want more corporate interference, they shouldn't have signed on the dotted line. As such, those two are not without blame.

a few new claims about the game: Cinematic Designer John Perry said that "he's had a longer pre-production on Dragon Age 3 than any other BioWare project he's worked on," and that "one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of Dragon Age 2's levels." not hard to imagine once you cut out all the repeated stuff.

Yep, while I liked a lot of the things they did with DA2, I disliked an equal amount in a worse way.
It'll take a lot to convince me to buy the game at full price.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing if a good portion of that extra time is spent polishing the game. IMO one of the big problems for DA2 was that the 1-1/2 years between it and DA:O just wasn't enough time to produce a quality sequel. My fear though, is that this extention is mostly for ramp up time on the new dev kits.

Honestly, more time is still more time. Learning new dev kits is more of a technical issues. Any artists on the team can still be making new art assets.
And think about all the extra memory that will be in the new consoles, early reports say it's a whopping 2GB of memory now, which is crazy since everything's only 512mb of memory now.

I'm not worried about polish and overall quality. Bioware and EA are generally good at that. What they are NOT good at is how they milk the customers. Here's what to expect for Dragon Age 3:
- 6-12 different day 1 DLC packages, most of them locked to various retail chains or Origin. - The game will be unavailable on Steam. Forever. - A small, but vital companion will be locked out as "free" day 1 DLC that requires a pre-order unless you want to pay $5 or $10 for it. - One or two Facebook games will give you bonus items in the full game. Your friends will all see how you whored yourself out for items. - A mobile app that gives you bonus items in the full game. - Various websites will offer "competitions" where you give them your email address and they give you bonus items in the full game. Limited to the first 3000 entries only! - "Deluxe Edition" available as a preorder. "Deluxe Digital Edition" means downloading from Origin. These are mostly stripped down compared to their retail counterparts. All deluxe editions contain additional bonus items and a piece of day 1 DLC that costs everyone else money.
It's like this for all their games recently. I'm tired of it all and don't want to get involved any more. Add in the watered-down choices, stories and characters in their recent games (designed by committee to appeal to the largest possible demographics! Inspiration taken from Japanese character design!) and I'm out. Bioware can go die for all I care.

Yup, all the extra $ for DLC is pure BS IMO. I didn't get the WiiU day 1 and I don't plan on getting the other 2 next gen consoles day 1 either. The current DA:O I have is the 360 GOTY version which my son got for me in a sale about 2 years ago for $10 and it has every DLC ever realeased on it. Based on that, I'm hopeful that by the time I get a next gen console the DA3 GOTY version will be out an it'll be a much better deal.

I really hope it's going to be something like Skyrim open world with DA1 turn based combat. I'm recently replaying Skyrim (quit earlier due to bugs) and the world design is simply the best I have ever seen in any video game. The combat system is lacking though (Bethesda just doesn't get it even after so many Elder Scrolls games).

DA1 turn based combat. There is no such thing. Dragon Age: Origins had real time combat with pause. "Turn based" means that characters quite literally take turns acting.
