I'm worried about the heating in the x360, so I have a question concerning the placement of the console.  It can either be horizontal on a thin shelf under the tv, or vertical in a cabinet at the bottom of the entertainment unit.  Problem with the bottom cabinet is that the door must be open anytime I play a game or watch a movie.  With it horizontal, there is maybe two inches from the top of the console to the top of the shelf/slot under the tv.  Considering the heating of the 360, which am I better off doing?   The entertainment unit is a large wooden piece similar to a wardrobe with a large space for a tv, so it's not really an open air piece of furnature.  This unit is similar, with the xbox going where the cable box is in the picture.  Of course the doors next to the tv slide in, but the bottom of this unit is different than mine.  My unit has two cabinet doors at the bottom.  Your advice is appreciated.

Was vertical with my first one, and I am convinced it had something to do with it breaking. Horizontal only now.

Ugh, my Xbox 360 is vertical... is there some sort of problem with that? Or just preference?

I don't know that there's been any scientific study on this or anything, but popular opinion is that vertical 360s have a higher incidence of scratched game discs, read errors, and eventual red rings of death.  Some people insist that these problems only affect people who are trying to reposition the unit while it's turned on, but the anecdotal evidence has been enough to convince me to keep it horizontal.

Any and all CD based systems are always in the horizontal direction for me. If you put it vertical, you're fighting gravity in some way, shape, or form, and as such it'll put more wear and tear on your device.

Always had my PS2 and 360 horizontal, never had a problem with either, and usually recommend horizontal to others.

However, with the Wii, I have it vertical.  My thinking on this is that A) it fits better.  B) it looks neater.  C) it's Nintendo, and they're damn good at making crap that just don't break, so I'm not worried about it at all.  Plus, this way it's way easier to access the Gamecube ports when they're on top than on the side.

I have mine horizontal. It also sits on an old textbook to allow all of the vents to breathe.  No idea if it makes a difference or not, but after 2 others died on me I prefer not to take any chances.

Heh, mine too.  actually it sits on top of a copy of 'Good Omens', and then on top of it is another book and then my DVD player.

Horizontal with no other equipment on top or underneath it.  The shelf it is on has plenty of space on all sides, including the top and is open to the front and back.

+1 -- the only scratched disk I had was, er, well, when it was moving vertically from horizontally...

I take no chances.  I have it sitting horizontally on top of a milk crate.

(My wife thinks the milk crate REALLY makes the den look great.  thumbsup)

Milk crate.... that would be perfect.  Now I just have to either dump a bunch of manuals out of one at home, or find another one around here.

Better yet, get a nice Antec laptop cooler, which is USB powered, very thin, well constructed, and good at cooling. It's much more aesthetically pleasing.

Horizontal

I noticed way too much heat underneath, so i also added 4 rubber erasers to elevate it, creating better airflow. Now it's much cooler to the touch than before.

You know, I never thought about doing that for my 360. It makes so much sense. And it would only run about $20-30 for a great cooling system.
