The strategy guide recommends Lvl 6 so grind a bit.  But really I can't remember any other dungeons that I had to grind prior to tackling - the game does a great job of getting you to the right level you need for the dungeons.

I really need to finish this.

I think they wanted to hit people with the old-school nostalgia at the start of the game, so it's more difficult than the rest.

Before the 1st dungeon and before Dark Ruins were the only two times in the game I had to grind before completing.

I leveled the first area to around level 7, and the game has been a breeze since then.  The Dark Ruins is about the only other place I've died, but even that wasn't too bad...

Such a sweet game!

You don't really need to "grind" - there's plenty to actually explore in the first area - chests to find, special monsters to fight, and even a little sidequest.

You can say that again.  According to most of the people here, I need to get my characters up another two levels before I can feasibly attempt the Dark Ruins.  I decided to run around and have random encounters in an attempt to level, but got bored with that real quick.  So I shelved it.  Hope to go back to it some day, but one thing I can't stand is just mindless, repetitive killing just so I can level.

Actually, I have a level 60 in World of Warcraft, but I got a lot of experience in that game doing quests.  In other words, even though it was mindless killing, Blizzard made you feel like there was a reason to do it.

Well, don't bother with the Dragon Quest series then.  biggrin

Me?  I love the games.  But they're definitely not for everyone!

Yeah I haven't gotten to play DQ8 yet, I am still slugging through 7 and having to level like a beast

however, my wife did pretty good until that last area, that place it tough even when you are levelled well.

Have you explored the world much?  You don't just have to wander around in one spot fighting enemies - go search for treasure chests or monsters to recruit.  I haven't done anything other than fully explore the world, and King Trode keeps telling me that I'm overleveled.
