Divine Divinity..GOG Dl'd Patch?

I have been playing Divine Divinity using a dl'd from GOG I think. Anyway I have run into a bug that prevents me from finishing the game. I have found a walkthrough on line that claims the problem I have was resolved in a patch years ago.

My question....Aren't these digitial downloads fully patched?

AND...What would happen if I tried to put a patch over what I have now?

The glitch involves the recruiting of the Imp for the Council of Seven. Any help would be appreciated.
