I tried the demo for this for the PS3 and didn't find myself getting into it. I never got very far in Torchlight either, nor in the other click and hack game that was big on the PC 4 or 5 years ago. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to enjoy this type of game like everyone else seems to?

Have you tried playing with some friends?  I've had fun with games like Torchlight 2, Borderlands and Diablo 3 single player, but they're a lot more fun when you're teaming up with people of different classes and getting all your powers to work in tandem.

I'm not sure a demo will really give the best representation of this kind of game. A lot of the joy people get out of Diablo is the gathering of loot and the way your character grows in power. A demo doesn't let you get attached to your character or his equipment in a way that truly conveys this.

For those who care, the PS4 version will not support remote play per gamespot. Though blizzard is still mulling it over.

I thought Remote Play was a requirement for PS4 titles as long as they didn't use any non-compatible hardware like the Eye or Move. I guess Blizzard has the muscle they need to get their own will through, though I suspect this may be more of a case of them not having really had the time or inclination to look more closely at the problem.

From the article it sounds like Blizzard is skeptical about D4 working well on such a small screen.

Well that didn't take long. "As long as PS4 supports Remote Play, Reaper of Souls will support it," says the lead level designer for the game.

Why Blizzard won't add controller support to PC Diablo 3.  In short, the issues are movement and UI:

Quote
"It's a bigger issue than just allowing players to use the controller on the PC. Because if I let you use the controller on the PC, then I have to let you use the user interface that goes with it, and if I give you the roll and I haven't throttled the number of enemies attacking you because the mouse-and-keyboard players can handle all those enemies, but with a controller you have too many guys... The games have really been structured to take advantage of their environment and their ecosystem, so in the same way it would not be a good fit to put a mouse and keyboard on the console. It wouldn't work."

It looks like the expansion is fairly far along in development, as Blizzard is already doing a Friends and Family beta test of the full game.  There are videos and streams out there of people playing, but given that it's the full game, be wary of spoilers.

well, it is Blizzard, so 2015 wouldn't have been too surprising.  I doubt I'll be in for the day 1 server crash though, I think there are enough other games coming out around then that I can wait for them to get things working fine.

Blizzard has announced the release date for the PC/Mac version - March 25, 2014.  Now I just have to decide if I want to get the expansion on PC or wait for the console version.

The loot patch is supposed to be available before the expansion is released, so I would guess it will be out sometime in February.

I've been playing around a bit in the PTR.  The new patch is definitely an improvement.  There are definitely less useless drops, and even in the very short amount of time I played I found items that appeared useful.

The bad thing is without the expansion it feels like you are missing a lot (which I'm sure is part of the point).  On top of the new content, adventure mode and crusader class, you can't level to 70 or access any of the new skills for existing classes.  The new difficulty level scheme seems like it's geared for you to have the expansion (from what I can tell).  My guy was pretty decently geared up but could barely do much damage in Expert Act I.

In other words, probably not worth much time investment until the expansion hits.

The expansion is $40 ($60 for the deluxe edition). For that price you get one more act and a new class (which looks cool as hell). That seems a bit overpriced for what you get.

Started playing last night again after not having played since it was released. I am having fun, but it's not really pulling me in yet. Doesn't seemed to have changed much, but it sounds like most of the changes are for the higher up difficulties.

This may be wishful thinking but I honestly think the expansion will change the game completely, and essentially be a "must-have" in the way that LoD was for D2.  I'm not certain which things are 100% tied to the expansion but it seemed like being able to level to 70 and most importantly the Adventure Mode will change the endgame dramatically.  So it's not just the single act and crusader class.  Essentially if you want to play D3, you'll want (even need) the expansion.

I read this super long and detailed post on the Blizzard forums which essentially boiled down to what I mentioned earlier - the changes being made without the expansion don't really "work" - the difficulty and scaling of the endgame/lategame plays like it assumes you had access to the expansion.  Loot 2.0 is definitely a step above the original system, particularly once they remove the AH, but that alone doesn't really fix/change the endgame.  Adventure Mode looks like it's going to be the most enjoyable way to play the endgame.

Thanks for the info. Guess I need to read more about it. Now I am wondering if I should even continue playing until it's released. Just started a new wizard.

Still seems a bit much on price, but it's Blizzard so at least you can expect a high quality product for the price.

Surprised this fell completely under the radar but apparently the new 2.0.1 patch is out!  This includes the major changes to Loot and Paragon levels.

FWIW I started up a Wanderers clan, everyone is welcome to join.  I don't think there's any purpose to it other than a chat room.  It looks like you have to be logged in to send/receive an invite.

OK first impressions, nice!

Seems like they've tweaked things further than the last time I tried the patch on the test realm.  In one session on Expert difficulty (that's the middle difficulty now), here's what I found:

- While I wasn't dying much, I also wasn't putting out the same relative amount of damage, it was taking much longer to kill stuff.  This is with gear which I thought was fairly decent, some I even spent some real money on back in the day icon_eek

- The good news is every trip back to town I was loaded with rares and even got my very first legendary drop ever (!).  Even better is most everything that dropped was at least worth considering, and a few replacements later I was doing much better in the damage department.  As promised, the stats on weapons lean much more toward your class now, so it's really like a different game in terms of loot.

- A lot of changes to the skills so it's worth looking everything over as you decide on a build to fit your playstyle.  I kept the majority of my favorites but made about 4 or 5 changes to subskills and passives

- Paragon levels work as advertised, and it seems much easier to gain xp at least in the early levels (I only transferred over a total of 4 levels).  There's a bit of controversy that the points you get to upgrade are given to you in round robin fashion in a specific category like "Offense" which only lets you increase specific things in that category.  For most players I don't think this is going to be too much of an issue, you still get at least the illusion of some additional customization every time you get a Paragon level.

All in all it seems like very solid improvements heading into the Expansion release...

The PS4 release date still hasn't been announced, and they supposedly haven't even begun developing an Xbox One version (they haven't announced one either. For all we know, they might never do so, though that is probably unlikely). I would expect the PS4 version during the early summer, but it's just guesswork at this point.

Do the latest patches for the PC version bring the game in line with what people like better about the console version (as far as loot, monsters, difficulty), or are there still differences?

Yup - but AFAIK it's even more up to date in terms of late/end game content in the form of Paragon 2.0.  I'm not sure what the console version has for post-level 60.

Loot 2.0 is the complete re-vamp of the loot system, so that drops you get will be heavily favored with stats that you actually want to use, so no more wands with +str, etc.  There are also a number of new secondary stats like boosts to a particular type of elemental damage for wizards, as an example.  I didn't get far enough in console version to see if those were included.

Anyway, in the 2 sessions I played with my lvl 60 (paragon 4), I've replaced almost my whole set of gear with drops, and this is only in "expert" difficulty, which is the middle of the 5 difficulties, not to mention the final one I believe you can push multiple tiers.  To give you an idea, my gear was previously suitable for soloing Inferno maybe MP1 or MP2-ish.

Oh yeah, if you do plan to get seriously back into the game and want to add a little socialization to it, please add me as a friend and I will invite you to a Wanderers clan and give you invite privileges so we can expand quickly.  AFAIK it's primarily a social/chat interface.

The clan interface makes it easier to group up and chatting with buddies is nice smile
