Just got up and played for a bit. Had no trouble logging in now. Since I never tried the beta, this is actually my first time playing the game in any form.

For you smarter technical folk, is there just some sort of inherent physical bandwidth limit in these types of situations, or is it just a matter of having enough physical servers to handle excess load? I just find it odd after all these years and all the technological improvements, pretty much every launch with something of a significant size is still a failure. This is yet another of those cases where they have most of the key variables already known: how many downloads, how many copies out in North America. There's only so many people in NA that could possibly be trying to logon; just freaking prepare for all of them lol!
Of course I understand the load will decrease over time, but it's still just incredibly annoying when things like this happen, particularly with a big company that's supposed to know how to handle it.

I can think of several things, though I'm going to speak in generalities. Bandwidth: Right now, I don't think this is an issue. Blizz has four major data centers in the US and all of them are in great places for networking (one is here in Dallas I believe on top of a huge fiber ring. ) Downloading the client doesn't seem to be an issue. Processing power: I suspect this is more the issue, not the processor on the hardware, but just the sheer number of database accesses for password, character creates, sessions for play, etc. I suspect this is current their bottleneck. Everyone is trying to log in, create a character, and get a session going for play. That's probably more than even the best of databases could handle (and they aren't all the same physical database either, if they're smart)

Managed to get all the way to the character creation screen but many time outs later I seem to be locked up, nothing happening and no buttons available to select any actions.

I was here.... Game eventually locked up ...causing a reboot and now I just can't get in Fuck it... try when I get off. Probably will just create a private game when I get home. Like to have a fresh experience without leveled characters jumping in and rushing ahead

I keep getting timed out while trying to create a hero. Same here. If it's this busy at 4:30am, that's probably not a good indicator that I'll be able to play tonight. Rather annoyed, since I'll only ever be playing single player and don't plan on ever using the RMAH.

I'm in game! Early in the AM. I downloaded the game late last night. It downloaded in a jiffy and I'm now in-game for a bit before heading to work. Laying the smackdown with my Monk.

I might take you up on this offer if my trip to Best Buy falls through. I'm heading there for 10am opening. As a grown man, I do feel a little silly waiting for the doors to open, possibly with a group of kids. So I might get there for 10:05....

I think they said there's a 100MB patch? And not to beat a dead horse, but you do know you can fully install the game, patch and all, before you get your box, right?

Got it! There were a few people waiting for the store to open, but no one who looked like they would know "Diablo" was a game. I wound up waiting with two other people for the guy to bring the boxes out. We all happily grabbed the CE box and also the CE guide. Now I just have to wait until 5:00pm to even open the boxes!
So there might be hope for you if you want to grab the CE! Beautiful, heavy box! And the CE strat guide looks very nice, especially the metal bookmark.

I posted a link a few pages back, but I think I also just saw someone say that the old installer isn't working properly anymore. Not sure if if there's an updated non-Blizzard link out in the wild yet.

That's probably more than even the best of databases could handle (and they aren't all the same physical database either, if they're smart)
I picture poorly-paid interns running back and forth to a card catalog, looking up login credentials.
