it doesn't look like Diablo 3 is getting much love at Blizzcon 2010.  unless I'm missing something they're only giving 3 hours of presentations on it aside from the demo

3 hours of presentations is enough time for a release date announcement!

the first act of the Barbarian class will be released in 2012, with every act (5 of them total) for every class (5 of those) being released every 18 months.

it's only going to be available with the Diablo 3 Gold edition that contains the entire story; it'll be released after all the parts are out.

I'm wondering if they might announce something about their new MMO.  Though probably not since I doubt they want to steal the thunder from Cataclysm so close to its release.

I imagine a World of Starcraft announcement will wait until at least after Starcraft 2/3rds is out.

wouldn't a game called 'World of Starcraft' technically be a new IP since it doesn't exist?  kinda along the lines of what Irrational pulled with their 'new ip' being Bioshock Infinite'?

that's what i would expect too.  "it's new because we haven't made a sci fi mmo yet".  actually, i would expect kotick to come out and say something along the lines of "we're calling it a new IP, so if you geeks can't accept this isn't a new IP, then you can go suck it."

"We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise," WoW community manager Zarhym posted on the game's official forum.

There were other quotes from a higher level Blizz guy talking about it not being Warcraft, Starcraft, or Diablo, but those articles seem to be buried in Google now.

I predict $39.99 because, hey, it's Blizzard, and they can price however they want to.  icon_smile I mean, I kvetched and moaned about SC2's pricing and yet I still ponied it up. I'm not really that big a Blizz fan -- so you know they've got more hardcore fans wrapped around their pricing fingers.

As far as "new IP" goes, I agree with the folks that assume it means something new. World of Warcraft was not ballyhooed as "new IP" before its release for example. It's set in the Warcraft "IP" universe.

I don't see any need to MMO-ize Starcraft or Diablo as they're too busy using their licenses to print money from SC2 and it's ensuing expansions, and at some point (or decade), Diablo III. Yes, this thread was about Diablo III and I'm "going there" again.  icon_smile

Hey guys, this weekend I'll be heading over to CA for good ole blizzcon. There will be a playable demo available and I'm going to the gameplay discussion for sure. If there's any info you want me to keep an eye out, let me know. Hopefully I'm able to get a good amount of time in with the demo to pass some gameplay info along. I have no idea if they have developers on hand at the demos to talk to or not, first year there.

So PVP is pretty sweet, got a chance to duke it out a bit and get my ass handed to me. Looks like the biggest obstacle will be balancing builds. If Blizz gets this right, which I'm sure they will, it's going to be awesome.

well they got to get us ready for the end of the world somehow, so I'm guessing June2012 for 5-6 months of training.

Actually end of 2012 wouldn't surprise me at all, this game is far from finished. That's not to say it's unpolished, it's actually very polished, but they are still figuring out and finalizing a lot of things. I'm certain we won't see this until 2012, the question is when during the year.

am back. I played everyone class and the pvp arena thing. the arena was pretty fun, but i don't see many casuals playing it.

and yup, it's a diablo game. they had a contest there where a random thing would spawn and if you found it you would get a signed poster(sadly no one i knew found it) so we were trying to blow thing levels quickly to see if it would drop. even then, it was hard not to worry about picking up loot. i'll go further in depth later, but you guys won't be disappointed.

The single player was pretty much everything you would want from Diablo. I only tried the Demon Hunter but she was a lot of fun I wanted to loop back through and try the Monk but by then the line was brutal.

The pvp was way more fun than I thought it would be. Team work is a must and can mean the difference between a loss or a win. It needs some balance work, the wizard was just insane in the right hands.  My only hope is that the ranked matches don't depend on the level and items you have earned in the pve game.  At the very least to would be nice to offer the option to used preleveled and selectable gear heroes, it is too much fun to wait to be and end game item.

(6/6/6 divided by 2)

9 days to play before the apocalypse.  In fact, maybe the release of the game will be what sets off the end of days because everyone will be too busy at home playing  icon_twisted

P.S.  Q, just like you that awesome demon hunter has me re-thinking my main being a monk!  At least I have a good 2 years to decide.

If it came out in 2012 that means they would be releasing the next SC2 expansion, presumably the next WoW expansion and D3 all in one year. That seems unlikely, especially when they have absolutely nothing planned for release in 2011. I think we'll see D3 by the end of next year.

Although everyone (including I) complains about prematurely released games, I wonder if it's possible to take too much time with a game, and try so hard to put everything including the kitchen sink in it and attempt to make it appeal to every type of player, that you forget the simple joys of the original source material (Diablo).

I was 31 when Diablo came out, and I'll probably be pushing 50 by the time D3 came out. I'm sure I'll still wanna get it (I bellyached about SC2 to the high heavens but still ended up buying it), but the time I would've been frothing at the mouth for it was probably about 5-6 years ago.
