I tried to rescue the mother who is trapped in the Al Fresco jewelry shop - without a crowd-clearing move, I don't see how it's possible.  I guess if I had a few queen bees it would work.

Fun game.  I thought that it would annoy me to have to start over again, but it's fun.

Use the bench, luke.  USE THE BENCH!

Whew!  I finally just rescued her... it was the first time that I noticed that she walks slowly with a limp and has to be carried the entire way.  I picked up the Katana before heading over there and had a few Queen Bees.  I used the bees to clear the crowd and then cut through the gym to circumnavigate a lot of the Al Fresco zombies.  I used the Katana to kill the convict manning the gun and the jeep didn't give me any trouble while carrying her back.

Then, I noticed something funny...  After delivering her to the security room, I went into one of the back rooms where the survivors wait.  Earlier, I rescued a girl from the park (can't remember her name).  She was sitting on the floor with her head between her knees.  I took a picture of her and got Erotica point for the picture...  that's sort of what I expected.  Then, I went into the other back room and the two old people that were on the roof at the beginning were there.  The woman was sitting on the floor like the other lady, but her legs were spread wider.  I  took a picture of her (zoomed and centered on her crotch) and to my surprise: no Erotica points, but Horror points!  hahaha!  That's funny stuff.

i dunno,it was when the PP adds up,and then i get an outake PP,and frank laughs

as for achievements,i am sure it wont be hard for me to get the indoors for 24 hrs one,but the outdoors for 24 hrs i am guessing would be hard

the achievements are quite fun to get though, expecially if,like me you are just levelling up,so that soon you can start the game properly

Ok, you talked me into trying the game again.  If I can find it cheap somewhere someday I will grab it.

I'm waiting for the Platinum Hits edition myself since I haven't seen it for under 40 used anywhere yet.

Sounds like a good idea as I, like you, won't pay over that for it.  Hopefully, Platinum won't take a year from now to get here or I will most likely lose interest altogether.  I am enjoying reading people's strategies and stuff.  Sounds fun.

I've taken to using the sledgehammer a lot, especially since the one-shot head chop kills instantly.  There's a major drawback to this, though -- TWICE now I've been trying to clear the elevator with the sledge hammer when I inadvertently chopped my trailing survivor with the sledgehammer.  dammit.  I thought I was doing so well to rescue the girl in the box surrounded by the psychos in yellow, only to get her to the elevator and smash her head in.  Dammit.

Plus, the sledgehammer lasts forever when used in combo with the book that makes hardware items last longer.

i just did the outdoor achievement, and am doing the indoor one as i speak,i just left the 360 on for a few hours

if anyone is gonna do it this way, make sure you use a plug and play thing that connects to your controller to the 360,as the pause menu pops up when your controller turns off on its own, with the plug and play, the controller doesnt turn its self off and stays connected

I am loving this game more than any I have played in a very long time.  Great stuff.

Last night I managed to get Isabella back to the Security Room.  I'm going to have to do something about the psychopaths in the yellow coats because they make navigating to the orange juice too treacherous.

I spent about 15 minutes riding all around the North Plaza on the motorcycle, flattening as many zombie as possible.  Has anybody gotten the Zombie Genocidier achievement?

biggrin  Yours truly has. biggrin

Don't bother trying for it until you max out your levels and have played the game to death.

It pretty much takes 2-3 days of nothing but driving in and out of the garage to kill that many Zombies.

i got the 1000 kills, finally, and the zombie walk achievement today...i did the zombie walk in the maintanace tunnles, after getting there in a red car from the car park, where i had never been before

Getting the Zombie Genocidier achievement was basically the last time I played the game.  I'd really like to pick it up again and play through once more.  Now if they could just stop releasing great stuff for the 360 for awhile I'd have a chance of getting around to it.

Well you guys are making me want to pick this up again to play it.  I tried a few months back and quite because i couldn't get pass the first boss.  I also hate the save game system and got frustrated a couple times by losing alot of time because i hadn't saved and i died.

Might give it a go again.  Maybe Gamefly will not have a wait on it.

Honestly, the save system takes a little reframing in order to be comfortable with.  At first I was annoyed to start the game over again, but now it doesn't bother me.  Because of the fact that it is impossible to do everything on a single run through the game, if you have to restart, you can just try things a different way or with different weapons.  Or, I try to get all of the story requirements out of the way as quickly as possible so that I have time to explore around and try to rescue survivors.

I would also say that a walkthru does not damage the value of the game.  I have looked at gamefaqs quite a bit, just to read up on techniques for killing bosses, progressing through the game, etc... Nevertheless, unlike some game guides, it is more of a suggestion guide than anything.  It's just not possible to follow everything precisely.

There's a lot to discover here.  I'm still feeling like a newbie and I've logged at least 10 hours into it.  I only save when I know that I'm not going to torpedo myself by not leaving enough time.  I reload when a boss kills me (I cannot, for the life of me, kill the gun shop guy), but if I can't get it all done, I focus on the important story elements and let the others go.

Anyhow, I'm having a blast!

I just got a 360 a couple months ago and this game was mostly the reason.  I finished it last month and have since been going back to try and snag some of the more difficult achievements.  My current game has me about 14K towards Zombie Genocider, a long way off but a good start at least.  I finished the game with the true ending and had a blast, albeit a bit frustrating at times because it is difficult.  Some things I learned that made it a bit easier:

*** SPOILERS ***

 - Decide on your end-game goal and stick with it.  If you want to finish all the cases and get the true ending, make every effort towards that and don't even worry about the survivors unless you know you have plenty of time.  It's impossible to do everything in one run, so decide on what you want to accomplish before you even start playing.  I'd recommend doing all the case files and shooting for overtime mode on your first play through.

- Remember that all the weapons, food, and items respawn when you change areas.  When I start out in the security room I always head up and get the machine gun (end of the blue awning), katana (orange awning outside columbian roasters), and load up on orange juice.  The only time I've seen the machine gun not be there is if I already have one.  Boss weapons also respawn, so you can run back and pick up Adam's chainsaw over and over again.

- Weapons used by survivors do not decay or break.  My strategy was to use all but one bullet in a gun or to use melee items until they started flashing, then hand them over to survivors.  You also have to listen for a survivor's response after they are handed a weapon.  Some prefer melee, some like guns.

- Survivors seem to follow best when you keep pressing the Y button over and over.  The other method is to use the  trigger and set a destination for them.  If you take off and expect them to follow you on their own without any prompting, they'll end up dead or zombified pretty quick.

- If you are just starting out make sure to snap all the pictures you can during the helicopter ride.  You can get decent points for the guy trapped on top of his car, the gas station exploding, and the girl falling off the building.

- Also if you are just starting, always run up and save the two people on the roof as it's easy PP.  You can also snag a quick 10K PP for taking a picture of them just as they hug.

- In the beginning it helps to start over a few times until you are at least level 10.  This will get you some extra inventory space as well as life.

- Do not EVER save without first looking at your watch and seeing how much time you have left for your current case files or scoops.  I was pretty good about this for the first half of the game, then I almost saved myself into a restart.  I had a time limit to not only get to a particular location, but also to defeat the boss that followed.  I let the timer for that particular case file run down into the red without realizing this.  Somehow I managed to squeak by with a little luck after several retries.  Don't let that happen to you, always check your time before you save.

- For Carlito, the machine gun is just about a must.  You can kill him with the pistol, but it's not very easy that early in the game because most people usually don't have the aiming system down.  Having a "point and spray" weapon makes this fight much easier.

- For Adam (the clown boss) you have to be very careful when you attack because he will use his chainsaws to block almost everything you throw at him.  In my opinion melee works best, but the only real concern is to strike at the right times.  This is usually just after he does his spin attack, or when he is blowing up a balloon.  Guns are great for when he is blowing up balloons as you can shoot them which will cause him to stagger for a few seconds.

- After defeating Adam, stop the ride and let the security guard get off.  He will show you a secret way to get back to the other side of the mall without having to go across the court yard.  This is invaluable when trying to escort large groups of survivors from one side of the mall to the other.  It also makes dealing with the convicts less of a pain, since even after you kill them they respawn again.

- For the convicts, getting them stuck on a tree seems to be the choice method of taking them down.  Go for the gunner first, then the driver, then the front passenger.  For the gunner I found using the machine gun or shotgun from around a tree worked pretty well.  Once he is dead you can run up to the sides and melee the driver and passenger.  For that my weapon of choice would be the katana.

- For Cletus, I can't be of much help as on my play through I didn't do his scoop.  I've heard that he's much easier if you stay outside of his shop and shoot in.  The best thing to do would be clear out all the zombies, then start the fight.

- It gets dark at night, one item that can help with this is the toy laser sword.  It emits a bright red glow, even if you don't have it equipped.

- Use the books as they will do a variety of things, the most important of which is extend the life of specific melee weapons.

- If you find yourself desperate for a weapon, look for the nearest trash can and bust it open.  Most will have a knife, gun, or baseball bat.

Hope that helps some of you out, although I know some or all of it might have already been stated above.  Dead Rising is one of the best games I've ever played, problems and all.  I HATE games with a time limit, and yet even as frustrating as it is I stuck with it and am glad that I did.  If you can put up with the save system and time limit, you'll have a blast once you get going.

Wouldn't the same philosophy apply to these achievements as they do to the Zombie Genocider? Meaning that once you stay indoors/outdoors for 24 hours, you just have to get an ending for the achievement to count.

From what's I've heard it's best to go for these achievements in either overtime mode or your next play through.

The game doesn't end when the cases go cold, you just can't get the true ending or do overtime mode.  After you get the "truth has vanished" message you should still be able to play the game out until the end of the 72 hours, just be at the helipad at the required time and you'll get an ending.

Also, if you mix 2 orange juices in the blender you get Nectar. It's pretty much a full health refill along with the ability to attract queen bees. Very handy throughout the game.

gives you 3 options,go to title screen, save and quit or keep playing....something like that anyway

when i have got these recent achievements.....its been while i havent started the game proper,i just get the beginning out of the way, then stay near the save bench for 24 hrs...or at the helipad for 24 hrs.....keep the controller plugged in with plug and play or the controller will go off and the pause screen will come up,that way you can watch TV or a dvd(not on the 360)for 2 hrs....oh and make sure no onscreen messages(tutorial popups) are on in the options,as i think the game will pause when they come up as well

I think it says "Continue" instead of "Keep Playing."

Hey guys, sorry for the thread Necro.

I've been back on the Dead Rising kick lately and I have a question.  I get my ass handed to me by most bosses.  Did most of you play through a time or two to build up your stats before really killing most of the bosses?  I'm wondering if my character is just too weak to handle them on the first play through.

Thanks much!

You are correct leo8877. The developers intended for players to gain experience and then quit and start over and take that experience with them. Its a different system than usual but after a few times through at least the beginning of the game you will get experienced and powerful enough to mow through the zombies and can handle some of the bosses. If you are stuck, just skip that part and play the game to the end or just restart from the beginning and take your experience with you. Hope that helps...

Finally picked this up with my new 360 and holy hell is the opening a bitch when you lack teh skillz. I laughed like a maniac though when I found myself in a hardware store, revved up the chainsaw, then cut loose and watched blood and body parts go flying. THIS is what this game was made for. It's a shame you have to fight against the controls almost as much until you level up a ways. I would imagine Frank gets easier to control as he levels up because it feels like I'm swimming against the current every time I want him to do, oh, anything. But the chainsaw and the katana both make some nice mincemeat of the zombie hordes and that alone is awesome. I'm between cases 1 & 2 so I went to the other side of the mall to help some survivors. Oh yeah, managed to get all three of them killed. Maybe when I play through again at a higher level I'll manage to save some of them. smile

Fuck this game. I've played for a while and while I'm just now at level 10 I still can't beat the second time you square off against Carlito. Fuck this game and fuck its stupid-ass control scheme. Aiming a gun over the shoulder so you just slightly misjudge your shot and is slow as hell? Why, yes! That's a great idea!

I won't argue that mowing over zombies with a chainsaw or two is all manner of awesome but this game's controls SUCK! With other games to play I may throw in the towel on this bitch and pick up something else.

I have this game, unopened, and am starting to feel I will never open it.  I did rent it once and felt the exact same irritation.  I TOTALLY agree with you.  They royally screwed up the shooting controls.   If they had done that right AND made the font readably large enough, I think this would be a top tier game.

As it is I think it will only click with those who, somehow, managed to tolerate the controls.  My opinion.

Luckily I only paid $16 for my copy so swapping it in at a game store and only getting $9 won't hurt too much.
