Well I accidentally bought this off of Amazon Direct Download today (The wife is gonna be pissed since It used her pre-input Debit Card). So It looks like I will be playing it. Does anyone know if the Amazon version is compatible with my Steam Friends List.

It's a Steamworks game, so it'll add itself to Steam no matter where you get it from.

I just read that there is a patch coming out today and it completely breaks saves. So hold up on playing.

The version uploaded to steam was the dev version of the game. I'd stop playing until the proper pc version is released.

Yes, and it clearly has problems. I got through the first part of the prologue, only to be plagued by crippling lag. Also... someone entered my game world completely without permission... which was odd. Lastly, the lifeguard guy called me a "him" despite the fact I picked the Chinese girl. She is a spy... is she hiding something under that skirt? I guess the is the "sharp weapon specialist."  Roll Eyes

I have been having stuttering/lag/screen freeze issues, but I read on Steam's forum that if you put it on LAN setting, it will fix this for the time being, as the issues seem to be internet related, even if you set it to single player, since it still searches the internet.

I played for about an hour last night and didn't see too many bugs just one CTD.  Re-downloaded the game at 7 PM central since I'm not sure how to get the latest version.  It seems better but after 45 minutes of playing I got
another CTD.  Other than that the game has been fun and I hope the bugs get worked out as I really want to keep playing.

Brad Shoemaker from Giantbomb said it was a lot like Fallout 3 with zombies. That was all I needed to hear to preorder it today.

After watching the string of recent Quick Looks in which Brad Shoemaker fumbles around blindly and is unable to answer even basic questions about the game he's supposed to be showing off, he might as well equate Dead Island to a can of asparagus wrapped in tort reform.  It doesn't mean a thing.

-Autistic Angel

Brad isn't really good at playing and talking at the same time. I've followed Brad as a reviewer for a long time and he tends to like the same things in games that I do. He is one of the few reviews I'll buy a game based on his opinion even if it isn't well informed. YMMV of course.

Okay, I'm watching Giant Bomb's Dead Island Quick Look and it's easily the best presentation by Brad Shoemaker I've seen in months.  I've learned a lot more about the experience system, the analog combat controls, and the world layout in the first ten minutes, and it's reinvigorated my interest in the game.

I'm loving every minute of it. I've got 12 hours logged, only downloaded a 70+ mb patch, not the whole thing, and haven't crashed once. I was having that stutter problem but switched from internet to lan and that's gone. I'm currently level 9 but I've not done any MP yet and while I did have to start the story over, I didn't lose the 5 (not 6 like I thought earlier) levels I had pre-patch. The video was jerky until I did the SLI fix.

The ripper is just insane.

Even with the bugs it's still an enjoyable game.  There aren't many loading screens something that really bothered me with Dead Rising 2 so this game is way better zombie game to me.  It's fun just going around the island and seeing the different locals and wondering what kind of zombie will be coming to get you when you start hearing them moan.  This game has 7.1 surround sound and it can get pretty crazy when they start surrouding you.  I haven't died yet and I took on a hard mission when I was still level 2 so I haven't found it too bad soloing.

No, and multiplayer completely broke sometime yesterday as well and still isn't working.

That said, I've dug through the Steam boards and found ways to turn up the graphic details far beyond what the game normally supports via the options. So it at least looks like a really pretty single player game.

Yeah, the video.scr file in the documents folder. I was playing around with that, you just have to make sure to make it read only once you are done or else the game overwrites it.

Well, that trick used to work. The current version (released today with no patch notes - best guess is that it fixes the preorder DLC and nothing more) outright ignores the file and only allows you to use the internal settings you pick from the Options screen. Heck if I know where it saves it at now or if it can be modified.

And multiplayer is still broken. In a game that's aimed at co-op play. Hamachi support (VPN tunneling) is hit or miss for most people too.

This is what I posted in the console thread on this topic:

got this link over @ Blue's from a comment thread about an issue with the Steam version of the game. Despite how the reviews are - who cares about the actual 3rd person animation that is represented in this video http://youtu.be/hXmZX8iz2SE

It is a 1st person shooter!! I could care less if my actual body was a red rider wagon with bacon wheels!! As long as the animation showing my arm, gun, axe or what ever looks good. A good example would be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ijPeMQ3wmk

People will complain just about anything.

True. It is a first person shooter. With co-op.

I'm assuming all the models act the same, so seeing your friends run around like that would be kind of ridiculous. Enough so that one might be too busy laughing to notice a zombie coming up behind them.

The current version (released today with no patch notes - best guess is that it fixes the preorder DLC and nothing more) .

from their blog:

News : 2011-09-07Dead Island Steam Update
Here’s the latest from us on Dead Island PC for North American users. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused to fans who wanted to spend their day crushing some zombie skulls. Thank you very much for your continued patience and support and we are completely committed to ensuring that you have an excellent time with our game.

· First, the correct version of the title is now available on Steam and fans are able to download it now.

· Second, the day 1 patch notes in their entirety are below. Please note that this update may cause incompatibilities between the incorrect version of Dead Island that was released and the fixed version and cause a wipe on some saved data. However, we have a solution to help regain some quest progress: When the game opens, select New Game -> Select the same character as you were using before, and then there will be an option for "Chapter Select" which will allow the player to jump to the last chapter they were playing in.

· Third, Deep Silver plans to announce a “make up” to North American fans who were affected by the day 1 PC issues, stay tuned in coming days for those details as internal discussions are ongoing on our end.

· Fourth, the Bloodbath DLC is still on schedule as planned – fans who preordered the title will still receive the Bloodbath DLC when it launches (date will be announced shortly!) as stated previously.

· Fifth, we are aware of The Ripper activation bug which will not load as a result of the version update and this will be fixed in the next game patch, coming soon.

from their blog:

This is the patch notes from the Day 1 patch, not the patch that was released today. Wherever they're from, they're drastically ahead of us in time. That's why it's dated 'today' even though it isn't. Notice the blurb about The Ripper DLC not working - that now works on this current version.

Are you using an ATI card? It seems like the game doesn't get along well with ATI. If not I would suggest updating your Nvidia drivers.

There was someone who posted a similar screencaps on the Dead Island forums on Steam. Looks like one other person who had the same issue had the gamma all the way up: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2104657

I know I had to turn it down quite a bit. It says so the "Dead Island" logo is barely visible but I had to turn it well below being visible.

Ignore what they say in the Gamma config screen, just keep the gamma at the default middle setting. The game looks fine that way.

Anything higher, even slightly, the bloom starts getting to an annoying level.

It's not an ATI problem, it does the same thing on my nvidia laptop.

That problem isn't specific to Dead Island.  I'm discovering that nearly all of those "Brightness Calibration" screens assume that you're playing outside on the alkali flats of New Mexico at noon.

Deus Ex 3, Dungeon Siege 3, Killzone 2 and 3, and Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time are all recent games that urged me to crank up the gamma despite looking perfect at their default settings.

Yeah you will probably be ok, the ATI thing came from the Steam forums and the pre-release code, I think it's been patched to address any ATI specific issues  with the Steam emergency patch.

I switched over to using my 360 controller and am finding that works really well with the game. I'll stick with using it over the mouse/keyboard. I also am trying the analog combat controls, where you use the right controller to swing your weapon. It took a bit to get a hang of but is pretty satisfying when you do. Not sure I'll stick with it though. One issue is if you invert your control scheme it doesn't invert the combat controls which is annoying. Another is I'm finding it hard to smack zombies with the controls once they are on the ground. Then I keep having a reoccurring situation where a pack of zombies shamble towards me, I wind up for my initial swing, and miss. The zombies get all on me and I go in to panic mode. I forgetting how to fight, take a bunch of damage, and run away. But maybe that's not such a bad thing as its made for some real tense situations.

I have to say I'm really enjoying the game so far. I'm only a few hours in though but am eating it up. Would like to try some co-op once its fixed.

Any interest here?

I switched over to using my 360 controller and am finding that works really well with the game. I'll stick with using it over the mouse/keyboard. I also am trying the analog combat controls, where you use the right controller to swing your weapon. It took a bit to get a hang of but is pretty satisfying when you do. I have played about 3 hours so far and I am going to stop playing it until they get the co-op back up and working. It's a fun game, but I really want to experience in Co-op.

Definitely up for some co-op too, if it's working that is. Of course finding time to do so is another issue. Heck, I haven't even finishe Human Revolution yet.

Has anyone tried skipping the prologue with a new game?  I'm wondering how it handles all tge loot you can potentially pick up in the hotel, maybe I'll start up a new game tonight to see if it make you lose out on all that.

I even tried messing with the .scr file...

Are you using an ATI card? It seems like the game doesn't get along well with ATI. If not I would suggest updating your Nvidia drivers.
I guess I'm out then.  crybaby icon_smile

Yeah you will probably be ok, the ATI thing came from the Steam forums and the pre-release code, I think it's been patched to address any ATI specific issues  with the Steam emergency patch.
Dang, then the only thing keeping me away is the motion sickness I have with everything first person.  puke

I tried playing Homefront the other day and got so sick I had to lie down for a few minutes. And it wasn't just because the game's not very good...  icon_razz

I hate to tell you this, but if you still have sickness issues with FPS games, then you will definitely have it with Dead Island. Unlike most shooters, Dead Island's enemies are always right in your face, so you have a FPS view with enemies up real close. Also there is a really good drunken effect that will definitely make you sick if you watch it.
