Ok, so fair notice on the "DX10 in XP" thing. You're not actually turning on any DX10 only features. You're turning on a couple of things that DX9 is perfectly capable of that are only turned on with the settings on "Very High". Most of it is more advanced lighting. Their so-called "god rays" or whatever they are.

Anyway, the rub really is that the Very High setting is disabled in the tab at all when it does in fact change the game's visuals. Why is it even disabled on DX9 machines? It just doesn't make sense.

I am fairly sure it's just as a concession to MS and their push for Vista/DX10 as Games For Windows. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense otherwise.

I must be the only one who got the weird mouse problem with the demo.

My desktop is 1650x1080.  The game's main interface loaded up at 1280x1024, but the usable mousing area loaded up at  1024x768 (I'm guessing on that).  So I couldn't move my mouse cursor over the buttons to select the menus.  Eventually, I figured out that the button hot spots were shifted to where they'd be on the lower resolution.  Once I changed the game's resolution, the problem corrected itself.   I was worried I wouldn't be able play the game.

Now my only problem is that this and the COD4 demo have made me realize how badly my shooter skills have deteriorated.  Maybe I should start playing on easy level. paranoid

Cryap, I keep missing the thing that takes out your 'chute...did anyone see what it was?

I'm running the demo at 1280x1024 with everything on High and no AA or AF and it's smooth as butter.

Rig is 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo with 2 GB Ram and 8800 GTS.

Wow looks awesome and the vibe is killer!

How much gameplay is in the demo? More or less than 1/2 an hour?

I would rate it about 30-45 minutes long, with good reason to try it again on harder difficulty levels or try out different tactics on your enemies.

Great demo. Ran fine on high on my new rig. Love the "superpowers" and how fast it reloads on juice.

I noticed people were pretty quick to scarper when I threw a grenade.
So I started to throw them in pairs. With a delay to the second one. Result?
They backed off the first one but came back after it blew and got caught on the second one.

I dunno... it runs pretty terribly for me.  1280x1024 with all options turned to medium and I'm not happy with the framerate.  My system should run it just fine, but for some reason it's not.

C2D E6600
2GB RAM
7950 GX2 (1GB RAM)

The bit I played was fun, but I spent more time fiddling with crap trying to get it to run acceptably than I did playing.

SLI doesn't seem to want to work in a lot of things. One reason why I've never used it so far.

I've never had issues with it.

I also downloaded the beta nVidia drivers and things are running considerably better.  I figure this is now a launch day purchase, especially with a DD option.

The latest PC Gamer (reviewing, uh, late Alphas of games now in the developer's snack room  Roll Eyes) gave this 98/100. They seem to like it.  nod About their only knocks were that the Alien AI isn't as interesting to combat as the North Korean AI enemies, and that some enemies soak up a ridiculous amount of gunfire. Also, they tested and found it ran acceptably well on XP systems, though they consider it the first game to truly justify Vista and DX10 visually.

You mean like how you 'have' to have Vista just to put it on Very High detail levels (unless you make a slight change in the ini file)?

You Vista haters just don't appreciate what an awesome OS it is! Someday you all shall kneel at its greatness!

...................
wait for it........
.......................

HAHAHAHA! Oh, that was a good one wasn't it? icon_lol I am not up on what really technically requires DX10 and what is just purposely "limited" as a boon to Vista marketing. With Opposing Fronts, to be honest, when I see DX10 and DX9 screenshots next to each other, I truly can't tell the difference unless the article specifically points me to things to look at. So, for sure, I've yet to be convinced of Vista/DX10's ability to Blow the Mind graphically, I'm just relaying what PC Kramer said.

I noticed a 99 cent Crysis bonus disk at Target today (though they don't carry the game itself yet). I guess it's mainly an "artwork" disc with some multiplayer-only items and cosmetic goodies.

Yeah, this is a valid point, but you know, it might be time. My machine is just kinda sluggish right now. I need to find a cheap removable HDD for backup though.

So I finally played through SP demo, and wow.  I'd already played the MP beta and I knew I'd buy it.  The MP game was quite good and mods for the game could only make it better.

Then the SP demo sealed the deal.

Unfortunately, the game is slightly sluggish during intensive scenes, but during normal gameplay it's really smooth at 1680x1050 on my X1950.  So, I figure I'll bump the resolution down a bit and deal with the blurriness from non native resolutions.

I was playing around with combat, sneaking around a lot at first, you get a definite predator vibe while cloaked, but I love how they balanced it so that your energy flatlines as soon as you shoot or throw a grenade.  The few times I went gung ho I got killed, but after a bit, I got a feel for the suit abilities and started trying to new things.  The game is still cover based, you can't stand in the open even with armor on and trade fire.  Nor can you just stay in cover because there's lots of enemies and they will try to get at you.

One really fun moment was when I was surrounded by enemies, I jump on top of a nearby roof, then strength punched my way through the ceiling, landing on one enemy inside and then shot one of the two remaining guys as he turned around looking stunned.  Then I ran out of ammo before I could kill the third guy, so I ran up, grabbed him and threw him out a window.

This game screams out for co-op play, I hope someone comes out with a co-op mod soon after release.

By the way, anyone know what the advantage to the reflex sight over the iron sights, and vice versa?

I know the silencer is balanced by having significantly less damage.

So far, the main benefit I see with the reflex sight is the slight zoom in.

Oh, and one thing I really like about the scripting in this game is you see the other nanosuit soldiers using the various modes.

I find it seems easier to aim with the reflex sight.  beyond that I'm not sure if there is any actual gameplay difference.

8.0 from 1Up.  Very well written review IMO.  The gist seems to be that the first 3/4 is exceptional but the game betrays it's principles in the final portion (shades of Far Cry).  Doesn't dampen my enthusiasm any though- I don't care if it turns into a linear corridor crawl as long as the quality of that corridor crawl is well done.

Also, there are some indications that EA may have lifted any associated street dates (possibly due to the pirated version being released over the weekend).  I notice that both Best Buy and Circuit City's websites let me search local stores for stock (neither have it yet)- something that they don't normally do before street date.
