I'm pretty sure this IP was already purchased yesterday in the THQ sale.

That's especially true since they'll get the money whether this reaches its goal or not.

I read that Homeworld is part of their 'legacy assets', which weren't part of the sale.

Yeah, I would personally stay far away from this one. They have no control over whether another company will or will not sell certain IP rights, or if it is even possible given THQ's current legal situation.

One of my fellow gamers in our BattleTech miniatures group was a designer on Howeworld2. Since working on HW2 he's kept in touch with a lot of the HW fan base. We're gaming next Friday so I'll see if he has any in depth info just how legit TeamPixel and this fundraiser is. Not that it matters too much, because with just 11 days left it's looking like it won't make the $50k goal.

As noted, it certainly can matter as this is a "flexible funding campaign" which means they keep your money no matter how far short of the goal they fall. Be curious as to what you find out.

My thinking was with only 10 days left, who here is going to fund it anyways,as the goal doesn't look achievable and you won't be getting a refund if they fall short. I'm curious if my my fellow gamer knows about this too; I'm thinking if he hasn't heard about it, this has next to no credibility.

was probably a catch 22- they raised the funds to revive the IP, but in doing so alerted other companies of the interest that still remains for this franchise, then someone with a little deeper pockets waltzed in and grabbed the IP. ONly problem now is whoever that is has to worry about alienating the fans , the fans they need, who the just bid against. Tricky situation.

Gearbox has done a lot right (ignoring DNF - that was a stinker before they were handed it), so I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic.

Wish I could agree with that. Looking at their list of games the only one I think I liked was Brothers in Arms. My guess is they grabbed Homeworld to just re-release it and make a little profit.

Borderlands 2 is a good example of what they can do right, BoA and Borderlands 1 are examples of good games. But, Aliens CM and BoA 3 is a big sign of how they can utterly ruin things.
I wonder if Borderlands 2's success is enough to keep them secure enough that they don't have to rush out the mediocre, crap, or licensed games.
But one thing we all know by now is that Gearbox cannot handle two titles being developed at once.

don't worry, Timegate is still around Honestly, I'd trust Timegate with Homeworld more than their recent shooters. The Kohan series was brilliant.

That was a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. It's more recent than Homeworld 2, and there really hasn't been a space RTS since HW2. I guess you could count Sins of a Solar Empire even though that's more of a 4X game. Ironclad is busy working on Sins of a Dark Age. I don't think there's a natural home for Homeworld any more. Is most of the Homeworld team still at Relic? I know some of the Cataclysm team went on to form Ironclad and Kerberos (Sword of the Stars). Anyway my point was mostly that Timegate's shooters have been mediocre at best while they were brilliant when they made RTS's. Whereas I'd be excited for a new Timegate RTS, I wouldn't even pay attention to another shooter by them. I think Kato liked Section 8 though.

...But, Aliens CM and BoA 3 is a big sign of how they can utterly ruin things. What's BoA - Brothers Out Arms? If you're referring to BIA Hells Highway I couldn't disagree more. I felt it was a much better game than it's metacritic would suggest and thought it was much better than BIA 2 (Earned in Blood.) For sure the 1st game (Road to Hill 30) was the best of the trilogy. I have mixed feeling as much as everyone else here about Gearbox getting Homeworld. My concern is that they or their contracted studio might use the IP for a shooter or another genre other than RTS. My bad for not following up my earlier post about discussing the kickstarter with my gaming buddy who used to work for Relic. According to him the Kickstarter group was quite legit, but he told me that $50k wasn't going to be enough money to secure the IP - looks like he was right.
