I'm sorry, but Peter M. has burned me too many times before.  Fable was merely mediocre.  B&W was horrible.  So on and so forth.

I'll need some *very* in-depth positive reviews before I'll buy another one of his games again.

Still, I have high hopes as well.

In-depth reviews?  Check.

Positive reviews?  Let me put a few more hours in.  I'll have it ready before you have to lay down your cash at the counter.

Okay, here's the thing: I'm on the 'Peter M has burned me too many times' side of things HOWEVER I'm a huge movie fan and a game about making movies is very tempting to me.

I understand that we will NOT have free reign to film whatever scenes we can dream up.  We will have sliders that will allow a certain degree of choice in filming.

My biggest concern, the potential dealbreaker, the thing that I most want to see addressed in a review of this game-  Is there enough variety available through the sliders so that if 10 people were given the same set, props, and actors to work with they could come up with 10 distinctly different scenes?  Or is it a case where those 10 people would come up with the same 3 scenes among them, because the sliders only allow for three basic variations?

My previous experience with a game like this(Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair) had that problem of the scenes all playing a certain way.  You had alot of camera angles and such to choose from, but the tone of the scene was set(either suspenseful, humorous, etc).   So once you finished that scene, if you compared it to what other people with the game made, the scenes were edited differently but still basically played the same.  That got old fast.

If The Movies is a game where everyone who plays it is going to be producing movies that resemble everyone else's movies, that means I will be passing on this game.

The sliders and such seem to be for the basic direction modes.  If I understand correctly, the Advanced Movie making mode will allow for more specific actions and commands.  That is what makes the game a little deceptive, because there are two distinct modes in which to make movies, and we haven't seen anything for the Advanced Mode.  Can't wait to see Ron's writeup.

A few months ago I would have bought this...now...not sure. Black and white 2, while fun for me(if I could play it...) , it is a mess for me on the tech side. Just lots of wierd behavior and buggy!!! Fable on the console was fun...and I mean that. But B&W(the 1st), I loved it too...but also a tech mess for me...
Will the movies be a mess on the consoles?

Do remember, this is a group at LionHead that work on the west coast of the USA (IIRC..I might have it wrong).  Basically, It is a very different dev team than the group that brought you B&W2.

I`d love to grab this day one, but I`m gonna wait. I`m still playing F.E.A.R., COD 2, BF2, DOD:S, WOW and a few others. I don`t NEED another game right now. Plus I`d like to see what people think in a few weeks from release on this one.

Recent Molyneaux games are famous for promising a lot and then delivering a much shallower, though still often fun, game.

The Movies has a cool premise but I suspect will be a game that feels finished in about 10 hours.

I'm going to argue that your emphasis has no bearing in this case.  I've said it before, and I'll repeat it again,  if this game is crap then it wasn't because it was a Peter M. game.  It will be crap on its own merit.  The idea was Peter's.  But the team was a separate team completely, and Peter just kept tabs on them.

With that said, I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.  Ron's feedback has been pretty positive, and he hasn't let me down yet.  (The only time he has was because of Power Rangers Dino Thunder.  Oh well..can't review the good stuff all the time. smile  ).  I'm going to keep refuting the Peter M. arguement the whole way through, until someone provides evidence that he had more than executive oversight on the progam.

Well LE I can imagine where you're coming from but based on the reactions of the few people I've talked to (read: stalked and harassed) who've actually played the game, this one's a winner.

The interface alone makes this one worth taking a look at. The subject matter (movies) makes it a must-buy for me. Have you even watched any of the actual gameplay videos from the Official Site?

Yeah, it looks like Peter M. does The Sims.

Maybe it won't suck.  But I'm sure waiting for the <$20 pricepoint, knowing ol' Pete's track record.

I don't get it.

Is this an actual game or do you just use this software to make your own movies?  Can you record dialogue?  Sound effects?  Can you design costumes?  Sets?  Actors?  Or are you limited to pre-defined choices for everything?

If it does have the capability of being used as a tool for making movies, any bets on how long it will take before we see some The Movies porn?

The basic game is about running a movie studio from 1920 until present day.  Hire actors, build the lots, manage the staff.  Now, the program contains an automatic script generator that will make short movies in genres for you, no messing about needed.  Or you can direct the movie more in depth, or even use the Advanced Movie Maker to make two hour epics.  From what I understand, the automatically generated scripts usually create a 3 minute movie.  If you get involved, it could be 5 to 20 minutes, still using the basic stuff.  AMM:  As long as you need it.

Even better, you can have the program output the movie as a WMV file, and share it on the Movies website and with friends.  It looks like it is going to be a very interesting game/tool.

Edited to add:  Ron (Knightshade Dragon) should have a review of the finished game soon.

Apparently (covering my ass just in case) the UK issue of PC Zone (which comes out on Thursday) has a review of "The Movies" and gives it a 95% with comments of "Quite simply unmissable" and "Funniest game for years"

I'm waiting for a secondary confirmation but the first sign I could find is at this forum...

I want to know how free you actually are to make movies in the game.
Would it be possible for JAWS to return.
Or maybe Top Gun (the Baghdad invasion)
Or Back to the future
maybe even a CAT7 end of the world.
or weekly series like Raymond (Desmond), Friends (Associates).
Or even a good old blue movie (Girls going wild).

Or am I just picking some pre made sceens and pasting them together and adding voice overs? That would suck ass big time.

Yes and No. You combine 8000 scenes set on 45 sets with 1 - 12 possible extras, countless props, innumerable costumes, individual moods and activities for each actor, and you shoot the scene from there. Then you add the voice overs. Then you go to post-production and edit the scenes however you like. Then you add your own music and sound FX.

I don't think that will suck ass big time, but that's just me.

I'll admit - I haven't looked up anything for this game.  But the idea of it sounds pretty dang cool . . . if it's what I'm thinking.
