How long is the console life, before a newer version is released?  I've never dove into the pool, so I know very little about the systems. I'm mulling over getting one when the new lot are available.
Is there a winner out of the big 3?

It's anyone's guess, but the last generation has lasted 8 years, so that duration is as good a guess as any for this new gen.

Nintendo stands apart a bit from Sony and Microsoft.  The Wii U will have some of the same titles as the other two, but Nintendo is more known for its first party titles (Mario, Zelda, etc.) and 3rd party titles that do something outside the box.  The way you interact with the system is very different than the other two.

Microsoft and Sony are going to have almost entirely the same library offerings, but each has its own exclusives.  There are awesome exclusives on both sides, so it's really a matter of taste which ones are more alluring to you.

If you really haven't heard, there's much hubbub about how the XB1 will cost $100 more, will require internet connectivity every 24 hours for copyright protection checks, and will have some Microsoft-imposed restrictions on buying/selling used games.  I guess some people are also paranoid that the XB1 will secretly film your every move and sound and report your secrets to the Russians.

Other personal preference things: which controller feels better to you, which nontraditional controller toy you prefer (Kinect or Move), which interface you like, and which non-game functions you like better (bluray, tv, etc.).

If youíre only going to get one get a PS4.  I like my WiiU a lot but it is definitely a secondary system.  There just arenít enough games in the library right now to support it.  Microsoft has made almost every mistake imaginable with the Xbox One.  Unless you really love the idea of playing Halo or Gears of War I would stay far far away.

Halo is essentially being obsoleted by Destiny from Bungie anyways, and that's coming out for both Xb1 and PS4.

From the looks of the video, CoD is being obsoleted by Titanfall, and it's an XB1 exclusive.   ninja

It's too early to be making these kinds of decisions.

Titanfall is on PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360 - probably PC also.

Edit: Or maybe not ?? Timed exclusive by the looks of it.

Microsoft is going to do everything in its considerable power to get you to buy an xbone over the next five months.  The bitter taste in everyone's mouth will diminish a bit by then.

OTOH, they've completely misused and abused their considerable power to get to this point, so it may not be enough.

Just after a fim reaming by Sony, the main MS talking head is cockily telling people if they don't have an internet connection, they should stick with the 360.  At a time when they should be really getting their shit together, they're pushing people even farther away.

Sony did the exact same thing going from PS2 to PS3 and have learned their lesson seven years later.  MS has about 5 months to learn it.  And Sony's going to be coming at them, hard.  It's going to be an interesting half year.

None the less, wait and see is a good policy for now.

While the console cycle was seven or eight years this go 'round, the one before was much shorter.  I haven't checked, but I feel like 5 years is what's happened before.  The economic crisis certainly affected the longer length this time.  But there were also still plenty of good games coming out.  Basically, there's no way to tell what this next gen will bring, length-wise.

They had the chance to do this since their first press conference a few weeks ago too. Instead, every time they opened their mouths they made things worse for themselves. Every. Single. Time.

I have absolutely no faith in Microsoft's ability to turn things around at this point. If Windows 8 is anything to go by, they'll stick by their guns until a year or so after release, and then start to slowly back down due to user demands. By then it'll be too little, too late.

Sadly, when it comes to friends you play with some planning is needed.  I do agree it's a bit early to make a decision

No trading PS4 games with Wonderpug then. Oh wait PS4 doesn't have that problem, never mind.

The Life cycle of a console is, as a few have already said, completely up in the air now. It used to be 5 years, but 2 things changed that the previous console gen - Microsoft ditched the original Xbox after only 4 years, while Sony extended the PS2's life cycle to 6 years. All console manufacturers went beyond 5 years this gen - with Microsoft going the longest at 8 years.

IMO you should get the console that has the exclusive games you're most interested in playing. If you're more interested in multiplatform games, then PS4 is looking to be the console to get this gen. If you have young children, the Wii U would merit a strong consideration.

Also worth considering is getting a PS3 and/or a 360 now to catch up on all the best games of the last 8 years on the cheap.

3rded.  at this point you'd have a ton of games to choose from, and by the time you're caught up there should be a decent library for whichever next gen you want to go with.
