Without reading all the blurb I had and played civ 4 and for a time loved it - particularly the pitboss handling. Has civ 5 got a similar option in mp - or better? What aspects are people looking forward to in the new civ?

Had to go pre-order and download it. Still not sure about religion being gone, the way boarders spread, a couple of other little things, but overall, looks amazing. Cannot wait.

I pre-ordered it as I buy all Civ games. I just noticed that Steam now has the pre-load button enabled so I'm downloading it now to avoid the rush next week.

Looking at the world maps...
Amazon: "Asia" looks more like SE Asia. You get India, China, Mogolia, and 5000% more islands. Walmart: "The Americas" is Southern U.S., Central America, the Caribbean, and the top half of S. America. Gamestop: "The Mediterranean" gets you Spain and Portugal, Italy, Greece, most of Turkey and North Africa. Steam: "Mesopotomia" - no world map. Blurb says Nile, Tigris, Euphrates valleys, and the Persian Gulf. Direct2Drive: Civ 3 Complete + Double Civ and Scenario Pack (Availability currently set to late 2010) - basically, the first DLC for free.

Hmmm... So, it looks like Direct2Drive is the way to go? What does everyone think is the best option?

Don't forget, as it's a steamworks title it should be registerable through it for download so you could pick this up on D2D with the $10 off codes, ignore their downloader and go through steam instead. If my pc wasn't civ4 era, it's what I would be doing.

Yep just preordered it from a UK store as it's significantly cheaper, be very upset if it then doesn't work with steam

I do not understand these map packs. So if for example I order from Steam, I will be able to play a game on Earth, with something that looks like Iraq and the Persian, but this Earth will have no Asia, no Americas and no Mediterranean? Or these are special maps that would only be used on small, regional scenarios?

There was similar stuff in the older Civs. The Mediterranean map is just that. It contains only a detailed version of the Mediterranean and the areas directly around it. It's the same way with the others. None of these affect the Earth map. In the stream it was mentioned that the Earth map was scalable, as in it's actually generated for you as you begin the game, allowing you to play it on any map size. I assume these map packs work in the same way.

I just pre ordered on Steam.. It will be my first steam game. I couldnt find it for pre order at gamersgate.
I do have like 120 bucks on a card for gamestop. But I prefer to download the PC games now. I will save the card for some PS3 games or something.
I hope this steam shit is not a PITA, if it is I am jumping on one of these steam threads around here and bitching lol

Since it's a Steamworks game, you can buy the retail box from Gamestop, input the code into Steam, and throw out the physical copy if you want. The discs can be used to install, or you can just download the thing via Steam. It's a nice arrangement. If you wanted to use your Gamestop credit.

I just bought it off the website. I am at work so I have not got to download the client or anything. Wish I would have known that first. But, its not like the gamecard will go to waste. I like the download thing just because I do not have to "find the box" everytime I reformat. gamersgate had been fine for me. They will give me a manual or something I can print off right? I am a civ nub, and I like to have the tech trees and stuff right infront of me. In fact, I wouldnt mind actually having that guide book for this game. Maybe I can run buy gamestop and snag it.

Dumb question: Can I run non steam games through steam, and not have to insert the game discs to play them? I have a few steam games, and I love not having to worry about the game discs.

There are some games that Steam will let you install as long as you have a valid serial number, so you could do that with them. You can also "associate" a lot of games to the Steam interface, allowing you to have all your games listed in one place. However, that doesn't mean you get to ignore the disk copy protection in the latter case.
