Well I went bat-shit crazy and upgraded my initial $30 pledge to the $125 Colonel level, which includes the Hornet.  I also picked up these ships (which are gone after today):

* Aurora LX
* Gladiator Bomber
* M50 Interceptor
* Starfarer Tanker
* 350R Racer

Welcome to the club of needing RSI to lock your account before they release any more ships!  I see you went with the Gladiator...I couldn't resist the gunboat that is the Retaliator.  The Starfarer keeps calling out to me, but I find it to be so ugly.

I almost went with the Retaliator, but wanted something a bit more maneuverable.  The Starfarer isn't all that bad in looks IMHO.  Plus I'll be the ExxonMobil in the sky making record profits each quarter!   icon_razz

Unfortunately we just don't know how the engine stats fully translate, but my concern on the Gladiator would be the very low # of maneuvering thrusters...then again it isn't like stats are set in stone at this point.

That Starfarer is a space whale!!!  The idea of insane profits has a heavy pull...who knows I may end up in a moment of weakness buying one before midnight tonight.

You aren't helping matters!

I am locking my wallet in my car.

And since you had to post some Starfarer porn, here is a much sexier looking ship...

No clue what I will use it for, but I had to have one.

Not to make light of real addictions...but this is worse than crack...

Just wait until they unveil Connie variants, and Freelancer variants...

Damn. They've talked a lot about Oculus support, which has my absolute interest. I'm debating between the basic-est of basic packages, or the package with the MISC Freelancer, which would much more fit my playstyle...

Crazy what they are charging for ships.  I can understand that this is for raising money to help game development but when the full game comes out, are we going to be able to get this stuff at a reasonable price?

The whole theory is that you're supposed to be able to earn all of these ships ingame yourself with just a time investment.

You're buying them ahead of time with actual cash.

But only the dev team has any idea of how much 'time' it would take to earn all of these otherwise.

That said, I've been looking for a game like this for YEARS. And this is the guy who helped make the absolutely epic (for the time) Wing Commander series. I do think he knows what he's doing.

And just think of all the money that a traditional publisher is LOSING because of him.

EDIT: That said, I already have an Origin 300i sitting on my account (Kickstartered), along with T-Shirt and wallet card (very geeky and very cool). Should I buy more ships...

No extras for me.  I got the KS thing, my white wallet card, and my RSI Aurora with lifetime insurance.  My attention span is so short, there's no point in throwing mass amounts of money at it.

AFAIK, there's more to buying a ship than simply forking over in-game money. It has to be produced. This means a planet needs to be supplied with everything it needs to construct a starship, which can be a truly massive effort for the big ones. If someone else has bought a capital ship recently, the planet you're trying to buy from may not be able to fulfill your order. Building a ship can take a lot of time too. Then, when you can finally buy the finished product, market fluctuations may mean that it ends up being more expensive than you thought if there's large demand.

Which is one of the balances to life time insurance, just because your ship hull is replaced for free, that doesn't mean it will be instantaneous (although I have read the initial pledge ships will be instant replacements, but not the limited time pledge ships.) nor does the LTI cover any of the upgrades or cargo, that requires additional in game insurance.

I read yesterday that an estimate on how long it would take to earn a ship, a Constellation for example would take around 60 hours of play to get the credits and find the ship/have it produced.  I do not know what the cash shop equivalent prices will be, but I do know that there will be a cap on how many credits you can purchase via the cash shop, I believe on a daily basis.

I ended up staying mildly reasonable and just parking the Aurora LX in my garage. I'm hoping that the alpha will be out in time for me to at least try a Freelancer or an Origin 315p before I sink the cash on one of them - I love the idea of an exploration ship but I do want to tool around in them first before buying the lifetime insurance.

That brings up a question.  Will you be able to fly any ship in the Alpha or are you limited to flying the ships you own?

Well the first portion of the alpha will just be the hangar, no flying there.  I am not sure about the dog fighting alpha in December/January, I suspect it will be only a few select ships.

I bought a Freelancer and I don't even know why.  Was weird picking a ship not really knowing much about it.  I kind of went with it because it looked neat.

That's one of my two ships as well (the other one being the Origin 325a). To me it looks like the ship that is the closest to the Millennium Falcon / Serenity kind of experience, which is why I got it in the first place.

Welcome to the club of needing RSI to lock your account before they release any more ships!

Well, that didn't work out too well.  Upgraded to Rear Admiral, which added the Constellation.  Kept (rebought) my Hornet and also added:

* Avenger
* Cutlass

So far, I'm $1050 in.  As I tell my fellow male compadres.....I don't golf and I don't bowl (and I know damn well they spend a fortune on both), but I do love my gaming.

In the end I see it as putting my money where my mouth is.  I have been wanting a new space combat sim in the vein of the Wing Commanders and Privateer for a long time.  While I am getting rewards for the money I spend, I am doing it to support a development team.

Agree 110% (Lou Ferrigno style)

It's a true investment in receiving what the space sim crowd wants.  There is no way this is going to fail. (Could you imagine the class action suit if it does?)

I do envy you folks who have such solid faith that this will turn into the awesome thing we hope it will. Space sims are probably my favorite genre of my gaming life, and while I was more a fan of the Star Wars space sims, the Wing Commander series was huge for me. Especially Privateer. I sank countless hours into that.

But man, sinking hundreds or even a hundred bucks into the promise of a game? I wish I could believe. I guess I've seen just a few too many once favorite game designers lose their touch. Here's hoping you believers are right, and that you all get your money's worth.

+1

As far as I can tell, there haven't been any real gameplay videos, right? How does the combat feel or work? How does it all fit together? Will it be like Wing Commander, I-War, Freespace, X-Wing, X3...? I like looking at spaceships as much as any guy here (maybe even more so, I think I spend HOURS looking at all the spaceships in the ships list of Freespace II, marvelling at their sight), but I'd like them to start showing more gameplay.

It's a different mindset with crowdfunding now.  We've been programmed over many years to think about pre-purchase spending from the mindset of a pre-order.  I've had to change how I think about it.  I look at contributions like Greggy_D's as passionate patronage now.  I don't see any difference between being a patron of the fine arts, or a patron of a specific video game development studio or project.  There's absolutely a risk, but patronage is bigger than just getting a return on the investment.  For me it's about supporting a project because of the risk they're willing to take.

I contributed more than the value of the game for Wasteland 2, but I viewed that as being a patron of a type of entertainment that most big publishers won't fund today.  I hope Star Citizen releases, and that it's a great game.  I can thank people like Greggy_D and Arkon for contributing as much as they have so I can benefit from the development and purchase it at retail  icon_smile

I don't think it's crazy.  I'd rather have studios developing to the wants/needs of patrons and fans than big publisher investors.  For a few recent examples of why, look at what EA did to Mass Effect 3 (decaying end game troop strength to encourage...supporting EA's social gaming vision) or Sim City.

I hope that the lack of a publisher allows the team to work on their vision and not meet a bottom line determined by a business model as well as not having to put out a game to meet a end of quarter deadline either.  I'm $110 in and that is the max amount of faith I have, couldn't even add $25 for an additional ship because I was thinking "what if it isn't what I want to play even if it is good"?

Ahh ok I'm seeing it work now. I couldnt figure out why I could no longer purchase LTI ships, being that I would consider myself an original backer, if not by much. (I picked up the 35? $ aurora LX package when it was on sale.... LTI, alpha/beta access, etc.)

The trick of course being... you have to be logged into the site to see ships with LTI available.
