This might be a long shot, but thought I'd ask. I really wanted to play CoN, but I can't seem to get very far. I create my character, but twice now, just after that, the screen will just go completely black, and no buttons will recover it. I have to reboot. This happened once when i pressed 'Select', and once when I went into the menu options.

Has anyone else had this problem with CoN, or another PS2 game?

I've got a new PSTwo, and have had zero problems in all other games.

Strangely I had a similar problem with Kotor on XBox, but I doubt it's the same problem. smile

In my case it was a corrupted save file and I had to delete all my save games. :|  Hopefully your fix won't be that drastic.

no,

i've never had the problem with C of N, but i have had it with other ps2 games - but not after the amount of time you used it - i had a few that went black pretty much right after loading, sometimes after making one or two choices, but never more.

the first thing i'd try is just clean it with rubbing alcohol - you just never know what's interfering sometimes.  did you get it used, at all scuffed or scratched?  sometimes even the Maxel automatic type disc cleaners will get a game going although they make no apparent improvement in appearance.

i hate to say this now, but the two i ever had do that, i had to bring back, but it was EB Games, so it wasn't a problem.

Good Luck!

thanks for the replies.

mytocles, yes, it's a rental from blockbuster gamepass. I have it on order from swapyourgames.com too, but I used Gamepass to go ahead and get started on it.

It doesn't looked too scuffed up or anything but I'll try cleaning the disc. What's this Maxell disc cleaner you mentioned?

hey,

well, there are a variety of them out there that are similar - look in any department store in the audio/video section.  it looks almost like a CD player, but when you open the "toilet seat" top, you see two round plastic pieces that have soft material on them  (they come with two sets, one for "repair" and one for "cleaning").  you put a lotion/paste on one of them, and a "special fluid" spray on the other - probably distilled water, which i've used when i ran out of the original.  the "abrasive" paste, which looks more like hand lotion - they tell you to put a drop on one of the circular pads - that's a joke, unless you really are only trying to clean it, not repair it.  but however much you use, keep the other pad wet, or it will scratch it more, and run it several times,  you can get fair visible results, with numerous passes.  often you can get a "fix" with only one run-through, it just doesn't make the disc look any different.  be sure to clean the lotion residue off very well. first with warm water, then with two different alcohol cleanings (with separate sections of the cloth).

but now that i know it's a rental - definitely try the rubbing alcohol first (you know not to go in a circular pattern, right? - go from center out, "gently-firmly", with a super soft, clean, very worn and thin, and lint-less piece of old tee-shirt.  dry it very lightly, then let it sit for a minute or two to make sure) -, that solves an amazing number of problems with individual games.  just because you can't see the grape jelly, doesn't mean it isn't there!

don't spend a ton of money on a disc-cleaner unless you've had more problems than you mention, with other games, and if you have a no-money back purchase.  if the alcohol cleaning doesn't work, obviously, just bring it back.  not worth doing more on a rental.

oh, and i've learned that some games are more prone to problems than others - apparently, GTA VC (ps2 version only)  was one of those, but i haven't heard anything like that about C of N - as a matter of fact, mine is a used game from EB Games and needed no cleaning at all.

if you liked Baldur's Gate, you'll like this, so enjoy!

Thanks a bunch for the info.

Ok, now that I'm seeing the disc in the sunlight, it does look pretty scuffed up after all, including two distinct scratches that I can see.

I tried rubbing compound, and it still locked up. This time was different.. I clicked to talk to an NPC, and instead of the black screen, the game just froze, and I could hear the PS2 furiously spinning and trying to read the disc. So i'm gonna just chalk this up as a bad disc.

Damn rentals Tongue

The whole problem is that CoN is a dual-layer DVD, one of like 3 titles in the entire PS2 lineup that does so.

And, as your PS2 wears down, the first thing to do is this ability. Personally, I had to open up my 'bought at launch' PS2 and clean/adjust the thing in order for CoH to even work. Odds are you might have to do so as well.

My PS2 is actually a fresh-off-the-line PSTwo, less than a week old. Opening it up isn't an option smile

Didn't know about the dual layer thing, though.

yeah, Destructor,

i'd heard of something about the dual-layered thing but don't know much more - do you - or anyone else - know any more titles that are dual-layered?
i know that GTA VC has given people a lot of trouble, and that i had the black screen thing with one of the Crash B. games, now i'm wondering if that was the problem...

thanks,

I know for a fact that one of the Contra titles on the system is a dual-layer, as that was the title to use to make sure your console was 'fixed' in the article I used to fix my PS2.

I thought there was a certain color on the back of the DVD if it was a dual-layer, but after comparing Norrath to other DVD discs, I don't see a difference.

Happy ending! biggrin

I got my copy of CoN from Swapyourgames.com today, and it's working great. No black screens or freezes. This one is right up my alley too ... I finished Diablo II, oh, about 7 times smile

Congrats!

you're going to love it for sure.  i still hate those camera angles, but i love the game - except i'm stuck on a boss right now and may have to perform my patented desperation move if i can't get by him - i import a teenager, takes 'em maybe two tries, and then i can keep going...

have fun!

Hmmm.  Now I thought Contra was problematic because it was a PS2 game on a CD rather than DVD and that PS2s had some problems reading CD  based Playstation2 games.

two more hours in, I'm loving this game. It's been challenging too. Health vials are FAR more scarce (so far) than in Diablo II. I've found myself running away from hordes to save my own ass a few times. I finally started putting a few points into Bind Wound (i'm a barbarian, btw) so my health regens quicker.

The graphics are much better than I thought they'd be. Nice textures, and really nice lighting effects. Animations are really good too.

Very fun game.

Will I ever be able to recruit NPC's to fight along with me, or is it solo only? I know you can co-op this one, but I'm short on people at the moment smile

yeah, Warning,

they do have trouble playing CD based games, i can never keep it straight, it's because they're lighter in weight i think (or heavier, but it's the weight issue, they don't stay in place when they're supposed to be spinning smoothly).

Import a teenager, funny. I had to do the same to win that dang ballon race in Final Fantasy X. biggrin
