If you've got any interest in board games, the subject should get you very excited.  This was announced in Germany.  No word if they'll be exclusive to Germany, though, where their appetite for board games is enormous.  I've never played Alhambra but the other two are great and relatively easy (Carcasonne, especially).  This would be a fantastic trend to see take off, but I have a feeling it will have limited appeal.  None the less, I guess we look for it by year's end!

This is great news!  It'll make jumping in to Cataan easier since it'll eliminate the setup process.  Very nice and I hope they do well enough to warrant more games like these making the transition.

I really hope these come stateside.  Uno was a huge success, so I think there is a market for board games/card games.  Monopoly could be huge.

Hell, I'd get Cataan and hopefully they'd have a trial version of the other two.

You mention Uno and Monopoly in the same thread as Catan, Carcassonne and Alhambra?  This is an OUTRAGE!  Hehe.. Seriously,  Monopoly has to be one of the worst games in history, especially when compared to hot german board/card games.

I'd totally be in for all three, if for no other reason than to support doing more of them.

Wow, that would be fantastic if those came to the US!
I haven't played Alhambra (although I've heard good things), but the other two are so great.  I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Growing up, monopoly was the game of the house.  It is a big family game here in the states, and I suspect would sell like hotcakes.  Of course if I had my wish it would be that they put Axis & Allies, the actual board game on live, that was a favorite amongst my friends and I.

I agree.  I guess it's not as hardcore (or maybe even as good) as the other games, but I played a ton of this when I was younger.  It always took forever to set up the game but it was a blast to play.  We could usually tell who would win depending on how Germany did in their first assault on Ukraine, but some days the dice just didn't go your way.  It would be fun to be able to pick up and play on a whim.  No messing with counters, while taking away from some of the charm, would make things go much quicker.  I would also miss hovering over the board and looking for some awesome strategy, but damn it would be fun.  The PC game didn't do it for me, but there was an old shareware game called "Dogs of War" that was basically a scanned copy of the map and the computer kept track of the pieces.  It was online or PBEM and it was spectacular.  They had to shut it down when the first licensed game came out, unfortunately.  I wish I knew where my (legit registered!) copy was.

Ah, the memories.  I still have my set.  I keep it in one of those big storage tubs with little plastic nut/bolt trays for pieces.  I even ordered an extra set of peices for those crazy battles when you somehow needed more than three battleships! Tongue

Actually, the three games listed are good starter games for introducing new people to board games.  A&A might be even more hardcore, but it has a huge following (the other three weren't made into a mass-produced PC game) and has been reviewed pretty favorably.

That said, I remember a friend of mine trying to get me to play in high school, and I couldn't have been less interested.

Catan can't get here fast enough...almost...

Some more awesome news :

There's a hands-on preview of Carcassonne on Team XBox.
The release date says sometime in June.  Looks very nice!

Catan in May (supposedly)
Carcassone in June (hopefully)
Alhambra...sometime.

I hope there is offline multiplayer, cause otherwise my Xbox might get taken over by my wife. :/

Where did you hear this!?  I'd love that as long as it's 2nd edition rules.  I paid way too much for the 2nd edition and all but the dragon expansion a few years back off ebay.

IGN has some details that were revealed during Capcom's spring gamer's day conference (where they also revealed Super Puzzle Fighter 2 HD, Rocketmen, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for the console networks).

I seem to remember that it was 4th edition.  Sorry.

EDIT TO ADD: I checked the link (http://www.talkxbox.com/article2089.html), and it is, indeed, the 4th edition.

According to Joystiq, Carcasonne is coming on June 7.  http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/carcassonne-making-roads-into-xbox-live-arcade-on-june-7th/

Can we assume that Catan is coming before that?  Two awesome games in just over a month (this week is Mini-Golf and Gyruss)!  I hope so.

On the other hand, Carcasonne seems more accessible than Catan, so maybe they're thinking of leading with that now...

Board games on a console do not defeat the purpose.

While board games are their own brand of fun (interaction with friends, no lag, no long wait times without being able to reach out and smack player 2, actual dice, etc.) board games on a console offer a bunch of unique aspects:

Never have to clean up the pieces/board.
Never have to worry about missing pieces, or the dog eating your dice.
No arguments over the rules...either the game allows it, or it doesn't.
Hopefully, being able to test your skills against people outside of your group of 4 or 5.

I'm far more excited about this than I am Settlers of Catan, this is just a better game.

Posted at 12:24PM on Apr 16th 2007 by OhJustSomeRandomGuy

I've cross posted these comments from the Joystiq article...and I agree wholeheartedly with RandomGuy.  Eliminating setup time and such can really help some play.  I almost can't play any of my boardgames at home right now...because of two beautiful little girls. smile  With the XBLA games, I can now sit down with them, and teach them the gameplay without worrying about losing parts or damaged pieces because of a spilt drink. Yay boardgames!

I'm happy to confirm this. Catan is due out in May.

However he wouldn't say the exact date.  But hell yeah for next month.
