Catalyst 4.10 impressions

Anyone take the plunge? They are a couple of weeks old now and I was wondering if it was safe to jump in.

I didn't even bat an eye when I switched to my new machine (and brought my video card along with me) I just installed them.  No troubles to report.

Question for you "driver guys" - I just received and set up a new PC from one of those great Dell sales. It came with an ATI X800 SE card. I look at the driver and it says it's version 6.14.10.6444 (and some digging reveals another number for "display driver version" - 8.012.1.1-040528a-015851C-Dell")  how does this jibe with "Catalyst 4.10" - or is the current driver I'm using not a Catalyst (and if not, what the heck is it?).

Or should I just install the new drivers and not worry about it?

That is the specific driver for that particular video adapter. Cataylst drivers are "generic" in the sense that they work with any card that uses ATI chipset. Since the Cat drivers are regularly updated and tweaked (unlike drivers for a specific video card), you almost always are going to get better performance.

Being a BF1942 DesertCombat player, I upgraded DC to its final release the same weekend the 4.10 driver came out.  I would load a map, play for about 5 minutes, and the whole thing would lock on me.  Checking the DC forums, everyone's best advice was to upgrade drivers.  I hopped over to Guru3d, got the 4.10 drivers (I remember thinking, "new Cat drivers?  Already?!?") and hooah, no more freezing.  I haven't noticed much of a performance increase in my 9600 XT with the new drivers, but they made my game work again.

Warpig, ATI has been releasing drivers every month.  #.x where x is the month.  So it's cool if one release doesn't work for you, the next month's are just around the corner.

Hot dang, I've been an ATI luser for years, and I never picked up on that. Curse me for a fool.  Ah well, lesson learned!  Thanks, Leo!
