Imperialism is one of those games that I have always gone back to, grown tired of, uninstalled, re-installed, ... an endless loop.

Well, after a short period of having grown weary of strategy games and a new computer purchase I just discovered that Imperialism won't Install due to detecting win 2000/nt (or whatever the message said).

Imperialism II works fine but I've never taken to that version.

Is there a way to jimmy the dang fool thing into believing all is well with the world while I sneak up behind it and put it in its butt     I mean install it.

You can try the following:

Create a shortcut to the setup.exe (whatever the installer on the CD is) on your desktop.
Right-click on the shortcut and choose "Properties"
Select the "Compatibility" tab.
Set it to Windows 95 (or Windows 98).
Try and run it again using the shortcut.

Hopefully that works, or maybe somebody with more experience with this particular title can help you out.  Good luck!

Thanks, Stiffler, that worked.  I must appologize, I completely forgot about that 'compatability' switch since I had never acually used it.

It installed like a champ but I'm gonna hold off actually running it right now as my computer is rendering an image (18 hours elapsed / 56 hours remaining) It had better cure world hunger after taking that long but I have my doubts  smile

FYI- If you go to the underdogs website (Google it) you can download this game as an abandonware freebie.

I did last night, but haven't played it yet. Looks like fun.

IIRC under XP the game crashed when you try to access one part of the game, I believe it's the over world map.  Imp II works fine on XP, I've been thinking of firing up a game I started a while ago.  Great game!  I wish game developers would implement some of the features that this game has, namely the drastic reduction in micro-management, especially late game.  I think of firing up Civ and I don't because I don't feel llike micro-managing a bunch of workers.
