For those looking to buy a PS3, but can't find any games to justify the purchase, now you can buy one and fight cancer while your system gathers dust. Sony just announced that they're including a folding@home client in the 1.6 firmware. Here's the press release:

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/070315e.pdf

Here are the visualization's that are included with the client:

That is pretty cool!  Javahead runs that on his home machine while he is at work.  I read somewhere that somebody built a big network out of PS3s at a University somewhere...

But can it cure English cancer too?   icon_wink  That is a very nice usage of downtime although I never leave my electronics on when I'm not using them.

Folding@Home has been around for quite a while for PCs, but cool of them to include it on PS3 with nifty visuals.  I have to leave my work PC on 24/7 to help with late night builds, so I run the SETI@Home thing on it.  Folding is probably a more realistic use, but I want to be credited with discovering alien life, dammit! smile

Looks like it is a huge success!

"As we've previously discussed, the Folding@Home client is now available on the PS3, and already some early results are in. The total number of teraflops generated by PS3s has already exceeded all other OS contributions combined and the entire project is heading towards one petaflop of distributed computing power.

How could PS3s have possibly already contributed more than all of those PC's out there??

But this thing has been going on for years hasn't it?  Are you telling me that millions of computer years worth of calculations has already been surpassed by a few months of a few thousand PS3's doing calculations?

More typical Sony fanboy spin. Its very good a certain things, the calculations that the Folding  project does being one of them. The same being them making a version that can use the latest ATI X1900 series cards to dramatically speed up calculations on PC's.

Really?  I didn't realize it was that high.  Yet what percentage of those PS3 owners are actually running this program?  I dunno.  It just blows my mind.

All 3 of my machines at home are running the folding software via BOINC as a screensaver. So whenever they're idle I'm searching for cures; except for 25% of the time I'm looking for alien radio signals. (After all, SETI created this thing)

I might guess that because the majority of PCs are splitting their times amongst projects, as well as running on very old machines that otherwise might not even exist today, the PS3 has an advantage.

It isn't measuring the total amount of data that has been crunched by each OS/platform, but the number of calculations that are being made per second.

the cell is actually so powerful if every computer were powered by it, the world would actually jump 3 days, 14 hours into the future.  because of the space time implications, sony is carefully working to limit its market penetration

Well, either way, I've had my PS3 powered-on pretty much non-stop this whole weekend and when I wasn't playing it, I was folding biggrin

Seriously, do you just stop by here every day or two to let us know exactly how we should or should not discuss consoles and gaming? Because every other PS3 thread you are calling someone out or telling us the ins and outs of how to discuss the console "wars".

I don't think you get officially added to the team until you complete one work unit.  I added myself to the team but since it's just going in the background when my PC is on it probably won't finish for a couple days.

The WU sizes for PCs and the PS3 are different as well (which also makes the stats not directly comparable).

It doesn't change the fact that my statement calling out the misrepresentation of the uber power of the cell because of its Folding@Home performance is right.
